Obesity clinic at CMCH
Ludhiana, August 18 Nowadays, eating habits had moved towards high calorie, high fat and low fiber food. In addition, stress and lack of exercise further added to the host of chronic problems, it was observed. In her address, Dr Mary John, Professor, Department of Medicine maintained that obesity was a gateway to many medical disorders as it was associated with type II diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoarthritis, coronary artery disease, sleep apnea and depression besides several other life-threatening diseases. “Obesity can be prevented (primary prevention) and treated (secondary prevention of other medical disorders) by making people aware of the magnitude of the problem. Primary prevention of obesity will be to tackle the problem in children and adolescents with diet regulation, exercise and education. Treatment of obesity is also possible with drugs and surgery.” Obesity clinic will educate people about the dangers of the problem. The medical and health professionals will guide the victims about life style modifications which could help in this condition. The clinic will be operating from the Department of Dietetics during working hours and Medical OPD between 11 am and 2 pm on all weekdays. |
Showcasing ayurveda in LA
Ludhiana, August 18 After its exhibit at the WHO’s annual World Health Assembly at Geneva in May last, the department is set for a repeat performance at Los Angeles. On August 21 and 22, the department will showcase Indian ayurveda at the Los Angeles Convention Centre at an investment seminar and business exposition. According to Dr Pradeep Nagrath, Chief of R and D, Pentavox Herbals, the company would be an official representative of the Indian ayurvedic drug industry. Some of the other ayurvedic manufacturers that would take part in the event are Maharishi Ayurveda, Dabur, Herb-Veda, JRK Sidha and Sami Labs. |
Students given tips on
dental health
Ludhiana, August 18 The programme was a part of the National Oral Health Programme that was being conducted by the IDA all over the country. The function started with the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, Dr Bhagwant Singh, the guest of honour, Mr Ravinder Arora, state president, Shiv Sena, Dr J. Bindra, Dr Vikas Jindal, president and secretary respectively of IDA, Ludhiana, and Mr S.C. Saxena, Principal, KVM. Dr Bindra stressed on the prime objective of the programme which was to spread awareness related to dental care. Dr Vikas Jindal, also a professor in Christian Dental College, emphasised the need of dental care, reasons of various dental problems, their remedies in a very captivating and interesting way with the help of slides and video clippings in the course of his talk “bright smiles, bright future”. He advised the students to visit a dentist every six months in order to stay away from caries and plaque. Laying stress on eating a balanced diet, avoiding fast food, eating more of fresh fruits, he urged the children to brush their teeth twice a day. He stressed upon the importance of using a “Neem daatun” and massage of gums with mustard oil and salt. In his vote of thanks the school principal desired that students must follow the tips given in the useful talk. He expressed his gratitude to the IDA and Colgate Palmolive for conducting such a meaningful programme of dental care in the school. The IDA will soon organise a dental check up camp for the KVM students, Dr Jindal informed. |
LDCA honours cricketers
Ludhiana, August 18 Mr Ashok Kumar Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, and chairman (ex-officio) of the LDCA, gave away prizes to the cricketers. The players were given T shirts, shorts and bags, besides momentoes and batting gloves, etc. Mr Gupta, congratulating the players, urged them to play the game with dedication and discipline to achieve new heights. He praised the efforts of the LDCA which took extra pains to provide the best available coaching to the young players. Abhishek Talwar ( 347 runs) and Sunny Pandey (254 runs) were declared the best batsmen of the tournament while Subhodh (9 for 109 runs) and Rishav (9 for 125 runs) were named the best bowlers. Akshit Kumar bagged the best wicketkeeper prize while the best all-rounder prize was won by Parul Mehndiratta. Arpit Singh was given a special prize for scoring a hat-trick. Mr Rajinder Mahajan, president of the LDCA, along with Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, co-chairman of the association, and Mr Charanjit Singh, life president, Dr S M Sharma, Principal of the Arya College, Prof F.C.Chopra, former principal of SD Government College, and Dr Iqbal Singh presented momentoes to the chief guest on this occasion. |
Few turn up to see ICC trophy
Chandigarh, August 18 The event was held to provide a chance to the local fans to have a close look at the trophy. But much to the disappointment of the organisers, the trophy, for which top cricketing nations will vie in October and November at four venues, including Mohali, only a few people turned up to see the trophy. Even those who visited the multiplex for other reasons evinced little interest in it. Many people were of the view that it was not the original trophy, but a replica of that. “If it was the original one, why was there no security around it?” said Aayush and Shivom. |
2 city lads for Asian jr b’ball meet
Ludhiana, August 18 According to a press note issued by the school, they participated in the Asian Basketball Qualifying Round in June. For their outstanding performance these players were felicitated by the district administration. |
