CMC tenders apology to mediapersons

The Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) authorities today tendered a written apology to local mediapersons for the alleged beating up of two press photographers by some hospital employees on August 4.

MC squad flees amid protest
Fails to put up barricades in market
Ludhiana, August 7
A squad of the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation which had gone to erect barricades in Feroze Gandhi Market in compliance with High Court orders returned unsuccessful following a protest by car dealers today.

PCCTU stages dharna to remind govt of poll promises
Ludhiana, August 7
In order to remind the state government of the poll promises that it had made on the eve of the last Vidhan Sabha elections in 2002 of granting the benefit of pension and gratuity to the teachers of privately managed aided colleges, Ludhiana District Council of Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) organised a rally-cum-dharna outside the DC office here today.

Pensioners resolve to launch stir
Ludhiana, August 7
Members of the High Powered Punjab Government Joint Front held a meeting in the Pensioners Bhawan located in the mini secretariat here yesterday. Mr B.R. Kaushal, chairman of the front, presided over the meeting. The front members flayed the Punjab Government for its apathy towards the 26 points demand charter of the pensioners.

Feeling duped by an authorised private coloniser, residents of Model Colony in ward number 11 here have urged the councillor of their area to impress upon the municipal council to provide civic amenities in their area. The council authorities claimed to have initiated the process for the development of the area.

Aggarwal Sammelan backs Akali-BJP alliance
Ludhiana, August 7
The Punjab Pradesh Aggarwal Sammelan has decided to support the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bhartiya Janata Party alliance in the coming Assembly elections in the state. This was decided at a meeting of the sammelan here today.

Plea on parking sites
Ludhiana, August 7
A delegation of shopkeepers and property owners in Bhadaur House Market today met the Commissioner of Municipal Corporation, Mr Vikas Partap, and urged him not to auction parking sites in the market.

Grain Market roads to be repaired
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 6
Office-bearers of the Market Committee resolved to initiate the repairs of certain roads leading to the Grain Market from surrounding villages and the yard. Mr Harjinder Singh, sarpanch of Nathumajra, presided over the meeting approving the resolutions.

Booked for bid to murder
Jagraon, August 7
Varinder Pal, alias Lucky, of Akalgarh allegedly stabbed Sukhchain Singh in his back and injured him. The injured was first admitted to the Civil Hospital, Sudhar and later shifted to Ludhiana. The Sudhar police has registered a case under Sections 452, 307 and 34 IPC.

Industry alleges bias by Centre
Ludhiana, August 7
Expressing resentment over the Central Government’s decision to give three years’ extension in exemption to new industrial units from taxes and excise duty to Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Sikkim, the Auto Parts Manufacturers Association said the “bias” of the government had disappointed industry in Punjab.

Airtel lowers call rates
Ludhiana, August 7
Airtel Broadband and Telephone Services has introduced local call rates on all calls across Punjab and those made to Delhi, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Noida.

Mealy bug hits cotton crop
Ludhiana, August 7
Cotton growers in Punjab are worried, as incidence of mealy bug has been reported on cotton in Bathinda, Muktsar and Ferozepore districts of Punjab. Mealy bug is a small oval-shaped insect, with a wax like material covering its body. The insect sucks sap from stem, leaves, flower buds and young bolls, resulting in its retarded growth.

Kisan mela at PAU from Sept 21
Ludhiana, August 7
Punjab Agricultural University will host the annual two-day kisan mela on September 21 and 22. The venue will be the campus at Ludhiana. The Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S.Gill, said today, “save water save Punjab’ would be the theme of the mela.

PAU to adopt model villages
Ludhiana, August 7
PAU has decided that under the Farm Advisory Service Scheme (FASS) and Krishi Vigyan Kender (KVK), one village will be adopted in each district of Punjab. This was stated by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh, at a meeting of the review committee of extension education workers and scientists here today.

City lad signs opposite Sneha Ullal
Ludhiana, August 7
City lad Kumar Sahil has realised his dream of making it to Bollywood. He has signed a film titled ‘Kaash... Mere Hote’ by director B.H. Tarun. Expressing joy, Mr Gulshan Kumar of GK Group of Companies, his father, said: “Making it to the silver screen was always his dream. I feel lucky and proud that Sahil, even with no background in films, has made it while thousands keep struggling.” Mr Kumar revealed that Sahil has been signed opposite actress Sneha Ullal of ‘Lucky’ fame.

Ayurvedic doc invited to world AIDS conference
Mandi Ahmedgarh, August 7
Recognising the contribution of the ayurveda in management of HIV positive and AIDS patients, the International AIDS Society has invited Dr Sita Ram Shahi of the local town to read his papers on the Role of Ayurveda in improving quality of life in HIV positive patients, at the 16th International AIDS Conference scheduled to commence at Toronto, Canada, on August 13.

300 examined at eye camp

More than 300 patients were examined and medicines given to them free of cost at a free eye check- up camp organised jointly by SPS Apollo Hospital and Gurdwara Guru Singh Sabha at Dugri here yesterday.

City doc attends workshop in UK
Ludhiana, August 7
Dr Sameer Goel, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at HDHI, recently attended a workshop on cardiac surgery in England. The workshop was held at Royal Brampton Hospital, Imperial College, London. Dr Goel was the only surgeon from India to attend the workshop in which nearly 40 doctors all over Europe participated.

Appeal to save poor patient

Gurbachan Singh (20), a resident of Jalandhar byepass is undergoing treatment in the DMCH for acute pyogenic meningitis, which is a recoverable disease, but due to the financial constraints, the family is not being able to bear the cost of treatment.

Ranjitgarh Golf Club reconstituted
Ludhiana, August 7
The Ranjitgarh Golf Club at the Punjab Police Academy, Phillaur, near here has been reconstituted. Mr R.S. Gill, ADGP, Punjab, and Director, Punjab Police Academy, chaired the meeting during which the new office-bearers of the club were elected. They will hold office for one year.
