SGGS College to start MBE course

Chandigarh, July 21
Panjab University has allowed SGGS College, Sector 26, to start masters in business economics (MBE) course in the college. According to a press note issued by the college here this evening, the university has allotted 30 seats to the college to run this course.

Welcoming the decision, the college Principal, Dr Kuldeep Singh, said the college had 10 lecturers to teach the course and books on the subject had been made available in the college library. He added that MBE was one of the most sought after professional course in the city and those who had cleared the entrance test for the same could now seek admission to the course.

“With Chandigarh and its periphery fast becoming the hub of IT industries and multi-national companies setting up their offices here, students with an MBE degree would have a very good placement future. This course gives the students job-oriented knowledge in commerce and economics,” said Dr Kuldeep Singh, adding that the college was also tying up with the CII, the PHDCI and FICCI for the placement of the students.

Union protests against teacher’s removal

Chandigarh, July 21
Members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) today protested against the termination of services of a permanent teacher in a college by the college management.

According to a press note issued by Mr Kulbir Singh, President of the college unit of PCCTU, the teacher had been terminated after she had put in eight years as a permanent teacher in the college. Mr P.S. Gill, a lecturer in the college, pointed out that the teacher had been removed on the pretext that she does not fulfil the eligibility criteria.

“She is a BE in computer science and joined as a computer science lecturer. Her appointment was approved by the university and even the DPI (colleges) then but with a rider that she would have to clear the UGC test. She did that after completing her MCA but even before her UGC result could be declared she was removed from service in March this year,” said Mr Gill.

Demanding the reversal of the decision, members of the union also raised slogans against the college management. Mr Gurmej Singh, General Secretary, pointed out that this act was intolerable and unfortunate.

“The teacher was granted special extension by the Chandigarh Administration which gave her time to clear the test,” he added.

‘Only 2 NTT courses in city genuine’

Chandigarh, July 21
Many institutes have been running illegal NTT courses in the city, alleged Mr Rakesh Sachdeva, Principal of the DAV Model School, Sector 15, and Ms Neelam Satsangi, Principal of the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Institute of Vocational Studies, Sector 27, while addressing a press conference here today. They stated that theirs were the only institutes running genuine NTT courses, affiliated to the National Council of Teacher Education and recognised by the Administration.

“Those running one-year NTT courses are befooling the public”, said Mr Sachdeva.

The new session at both institutes would start in August and the last date for submitting forms was August 14. TNS

AICTE grants 60 more seats to SVIET

Banur, July 21
The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has sanctioned an additional 60 seats to the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET) here for its electronics and communication engineering discipline, according to a press note.

Mr Manmohan K. Garg, Chief Executive Officer, while expressing gratitude to the AICTE for this gesture, hoped that the course would prove a boon to aspiring students.

The electronics and communication engineering branch would now have 120 seats, with 60 seats having been filled through Punjab Technical University counselling.

Presentation on pod casting

Prof Purnima Ram Sharma, a professor of physics and Director Distance Education, West Virginia Northern Community College, USA, gave a presentation to faculty and students of DAV College, Sector 10, here today.

Introducing the new technology of pod casting, Prof Sharma said the new technology would improve the access of students to learning. She said the i-pod, which had become the electronic toy of the moment, had a significant use in the classroom.

She explained that pod casting a combination of the word I pod and broadcasting provided an inexpensive mechanism to level the playing field for all kinds of students.

Ajit Karam Singh team wins quiz contest

HelpAge India, an organisation working nationwide for the well being of old persons, organised an intra-city quiz competition at Ryan International School, Sector 49, today. Teams from various city schools participated in the event.

The quiz being a part of the national level quiz series will be followed by state and regional level quizzes in Delhi and a national level quiz at Bangalore, informed Mr Bhavneshwar Sharma, state manager, HelpAge India. Mr Anil Kumar Thakur, Assistant General Manager of the Bank of Maharashtra, was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away prizes to the winning teams.

Results: Ajit Karam Singh International School, Sector 41, Chandigarh, I, DAV Public School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, II, and Shishu Niketan School, Sector 22, Chandigarh, III. The team of Ajit Karam Singh International School will now participate in the state level finals to be held in August.

Shiv Batalvi, Surinder Kaur remembered

Wisdom, rationality and aesthetic sensibility are the elements that comprise the force field for a creative litterateur to cultivate a passion for poetry writing, but endowed with an intuitive perception, the legendary Punjabi poet, Shiv Batalvi, was a cut above the rest, observed Mr Phool Chand Mullana, Haryana Education Minister, while speaking at a function held at the Gymkhana Club II here to commemorate the memory of Shiv Batalvi and the great Punjabi maestro Surinder Kaur.

The function was organised by the Haryana Punjabi Sahit Akademy in collaboration with the State Bank of India, local head office, with which Shiv Batalvi had worked during his formative years.

Ms Aruna Shiv Batalvi and Ms Dolly Guleria were honoured jointly by the minister and Mr S.S. Sharma, General Manager, State Bank of India, with mementos, citation, shawls and money.

The musical programme began with a rendition of ‘Mein adhure geet di ikk satar haan’. The mood varied from grief to shock and then to nostalgia.

‘Rumi — Love at its Zenith’ released

“Always revelling in the glory of God, a Sufi saint is an enigma. Shams Tabrezi, Jalauddin Rumi and Bulle Shah were humble and selfless”, said Anandmurthi Gurumaa during an interaction here today.

She was here in connection with the formal release of the album ‘Rumi — Love at its Zenith’.

The album featured Rumi’s poems in the voice of Anandmurthi Gurumaa.

She said India would not lose the basic ingredients of its philosophy and culture totally because its traditions and culture were based on lasting human values.

She said Punjab was the most cultured region, with a large following of spiritualism, but practically, there was no application of general ethics, with female foeticide and dowry deaths being rampant.

“Music is an integral part of spiritualism and Sufism. It facilitates a direct rapport with the devotee and augments the conceptual grasp”, she said.

Changes in serial to enhance audience interest

In order to infuse new energy and enhance audience interest, Sahara One Television has decided to refresh the story line and essence of its serial ‘‘Sunno Har Dil Kuch Kehta Hai’’.

With Sradha Sharam stepping in to play the female lead, Ambika, along with Mammik, plays Ambika’s husband. There are some serious twists and turns around which the story of ‘‘Sunno.....’’ will revolve in the coming weeks. As the serial expands, so does its cast. The daily also introduces many other new characters--Himani Shivpuri, Kiran Dubey and Prabhat Bhattacharya.
