Poetic presentation of Kaifi’s life Ludhiana, July 9 Popular songs and ghazals from Hindi movies written by Kaifi and rendered during the presentation by Jaswinder Singh added melody to the musical presentation. No wonder the spacious Guru Nanak Auditorium remained crammed to capacity with people sitting on the floor right up to the end. The narrative is based on the book “Yaad Ki Raah Guzzar”, written by Kaifi’s wife Shuakat Kaifi. It details different phases of Kaifi’s life. Besides the book, some incidents are taken from the writings, interviews and poetry of Kaifi. Shabana, along with her husband Javed, imbibed life into an otherwise prosaic presentation. The play reveals the full life of the great poet along with Shaukat. How they came together, Shaukat’s persistence with her parents to marry Kaifi, their marriage, life in the Andheri Commune, Kaifi’s arrival in Bollywood and his philanthropic work in his native Mijwan village in Azamgarh district of Uttar Pradesh and also the tragic paralytic attack in 1973, and subsequent
depression. It was the talent and the experience of Shabana and Javed, also assisted by the songs rendered by Jaswinder Singh that held the audience spellbound all through two and a half hours. The organisers had not expected that much audience attention as there was not any action involved in the theatrical presentation. Some popular songs like, “Tum jo mil gayay ho to yeh lagta hai, ki jahan mil gaya”, “Waqt nay kiya kya haseen sittam”, “Mein yeh soch kay uskay darr say utha tha”, “Bichhday sabhi bari, bari”, “Yeh duniya, yeh mehfil mere kam ki nahi”, sent people in nostalgia. The songs were arranged according to the particular situation in the life story of Kaifi and Shaukat, which made it more appealing. The presentation concluded with a poetic tribute to Kaifi by Javed Akhtar. |
