Judges’ appointments: Bhardwaj opposes panel suggestion
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 8
The Union Law Minister, Mr Hans Raj Bhardwaj, today strongly opposed a recommendation of the department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice for reverting back to the pre-1993 system of appointment of Judges of the Supreme Court and the High Courts (HC).

Interacting with mediapersons here, Mr Bhardwaj, while siding with the committee's view that appointments in higher judiciary are delayed at the level of the judiciary itself, said junking the present system, where the collegium of Judges recommended names for elevation to the Bench of the HCs and the Supreme Court, could not be the answer to the problem.

The panel has proposed that the pre-1993 system, when the Chief Ministers of the states too had a say in selection of Judges, should be re-introduced. This, the committee said, would streamline the system of appointment of Judges and also make it more transparent.

"We are aware of the problems. Names (for appointment) are not coming from the judiciary side. There is not even a single case pending with my ministry. But, the present system can't be just given up," the minister said.
