Row over appointment of college Principal
Chandigarh, July 8 The government appointed Dr Ashwani Kumar Principal of the college on July 4. However, upset over the decision of the state government in this regard, a number of doctors, who claimed to be senior to Dr Ashwani Kumar, have served legal notices on the government challenging its decision. In his legal notice served on the government, Dr Parveen Kumar Rishi, who is a professor in the college, has stated he is senior to Dr Ashwani Kumar. The Principal Secretary, Medical Education, had given a personal hearing to five professors of the college on May 30 for the fixation of their seniority, he adds. And the government has not finalised the seniority yet. However, it has appointed the Principal ignoring their claims. Dr Rishi has claimed that Dr Ashwani Kumar is junior to three professors in the college. He has urged the government to finalise the seniority of all professors in the college within 10 days and cancel the appointment of Dr Ashwani Kumar as Principal. |
No mobile phones for teachers in govt schools
Chandigarh, July 8 The decision to “ban” mobile phones inside the classrooms was conveyed to principals at a meeting addressed by the
DPI (Schools), Mr Ashwani Kumar, at Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS),
Sector 33 here. The principals were asked to take action against the teachers flouting the ban. Meanwhile, Mr Kumar informed that the website of the Education Department would be launched soon and inter-school communications would only be done through the
Internet. The practice of sending special messengers with mail from one school to another would be phased out, he asserted. And in a bid to improve the functioning of the Education Department and schools, it was decided to constitute certain committees. While Mr J.S. Basota, Principal of GMSSS, Sector 47, will head the press and sports committees, Mr Chanchal Singh, assistant
director (vocational education), will lead the coaching classes committee. Mr Sham Lal, Principal of Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 45, will be the head of the planning committee, and Mr Karan Singh, Principal of GMSSS, Sector 33, will lead the computer education committee. Moreover, it was resolved to make the mid-day meal scheme in the government school successful;. Similarly, the principals were urged to take special steps to maintain sanitation on the school premises. |
SVGOI gets AICTE nod for MBA, MCA courses
Banur, July 8 To be affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, these courses would try to bridge the gap between the management education and the industry requirements in the era of globalisation and liberalisation, Mr Manmohan Kumar Garg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), told Chandigarh Tribune here today. In fact, Mr Garg has chalked out an ambitious strategy to integrate the best of the Indian and the foreign education to meet the industry needs.With that end in mind, a delegation of the SVGOI would be visiting reputed universities of Canada and the UK. The delegation will work for technical collaboration and exchange of know-how in the field of education with the reputed universities of these countries, he added. Mr Ashwani Garg, Chairman, said that group was starting these new courses as the quality management education was the need of hour. With the tricity and its periphery set to emerge as the IT hub in the near future, the need for the qualified management graduates cannot be over-emphasised, he added. Nowadays, a majority of the B.Tech graduates opted for MBA courses. These courses are futuristic and in great demand as our country is moving towards a developed nation status. As per demand students from BSc/BCom/BA are also going for MBA/MCA courses leaving their subjects related to postgraduate courses. Keeping in view all these needs group is starting these courses so that all students can fulfil their dreams to becoming professionals, Dr C.S. Rao, Director-Principal of the Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology (SVIET), informed. It may be mentioned that the SVGOI, established in 2003, is currently running an engineering institute (SVIET), B-pharmacy institute (SVCP), BEd institute (SVCE) and a mass communication institute. Recently the group has started the project of developing an IT Park named as Swami Vivekanand Technology Park (SVTP) at Banur for the placements and training of students of all the institutes of the group. For this project, the SVGOI is collaborating with the Dr IT Planets Limited, a major name in the IT sector. |

organises conference
Chandigarh July 8 Over 100 persons attended the conference with participants from Haryana, Punjab, Uttaranchal, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The purpose of the conference was to promote discussion and intellectual interaction between researchers and practitioners focused on various disciplines and areas. Dr M.S. Grewal, Registrar, Punjab Technical University, was the chief guest, while Prof S.L.Sharma was the keynote speaker. Prof Sharma is presently the Course Director, in the Institute of Correctional Administration and is a retired Professor of the Department of Sociology Punjab University. In his keynote address, Professor Sharma talked about the role of technology and engineering in contemporary times. “If we look back in the past there are two major revolutions which has dramatically changed all our lives— the industrial revolution and the agricultural revolution. Now, the information revolution is transforming our lives and it is important for scientists to understand the importance of information technology. |

Youth gets life term for murder
Chandigarh, July 8 One of the main accused, Nishant, alias Raja, has been declared a proclaimed offender. While Ajay was given life imprisonment, three other youths, Rahjesh, Sanjay and Parveen were discharged on the basis of benefit of doubt. The victim, Randeep Singh, had arrived in the city to prepare for medical entrance test when he was murdered. He was stabbed to death by a mob, armed with chains and knives, near the Sansi Colony market in Sector 38. His companion was also injured. It had happened at about 9 pm. Randeep of Hargobindpur, accompanied by Harjinder Singh and another friend, was reportedly on his way back home after making a phone call from an STD booth when some boys asked them to stop. Before the three could react, about 10 youngsters had attacked them with chains and knives. Randeep was stabbed in the heart, while Harjinder sustained minor injuries. |
Judges’ appointments: Bhardwaj opposes panel suggestion
Chandigarh, July 8 Interacting with mediapersons here, Mr Bhardwaj, while siding with the committee's view that appointments in higher judiciary are delayed at the level of the judiciary itself, said junking the present system, where the collegium of Judges recommended names for elevation to the Bench of the HCs and the Supreme Court, could not be the answer to the problem. The panel has proposed that the pre-1993 system, when the Chief Ministers of the states too had a say in selection of Judges, should be re-introduced. This, the committee said, would streamline the system of appointment of Judges and also make it more transparent. "We are aware of the problems. Names (for appointment) are not coming from the judiciary side. There is not even a single case pending with my ministry. But, the present system can't be just given up," the minister said. |
Blind artistes mesmerise audience
Chandigarh, July 8 The musical soiree titled Dhola Panvi Khair is a celebration of love which was sung by composer singer, Amritpal Singh and Tarun Kaur. Both blind artistes mesmerised the audience with their musical skills. Tarun Kaur opened up the concert with an emotional rendition of a song Ikk Kora kagaz.. weaved in the strains of raga Bhopali which articulated the adoloscent love theme. Tarun brought alive the sentimental gloss in Karo na Itna pyar.. at times skipping the rythmic pattern. Amritpal Singh sang Yardiya ' and Jadon saada yaar. Tarun was at her best with the presenatition of title song Dhola Paanvi Khair depicting the complete surrender and submission to love. The duo concluded the musical soiree with a captivating duet of Tappas weaved in the Pothohari (Pakistani) folk tradition. This is a characteristic feature of Kaana's poetry. The singers embellished the composition with the melodic touches of raga Bhairavi. Kaana Singh also read out her best poems on the audience demand. |
