Medicos present ‘Sur Sangam’

Panchkula, June 17
A mix of old and contemporary melodies was presented during ‘Sur Sangam’, the annual event organised by a unit of medical professionals and surgeons at Panchkula today.

This year’s event, under the direction of Dr Pradeep Bhardwaj, is the ninth in the series.

A strong crowd of over 4000 music lovers is a veritable testimony to the popularity of this annual musical bonanza.

After the traditional lighting of the lamp by the chief guest, Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Chander Mohan, the programme began with Dr Pradeep Bhardwaj’s rendering of ‘Pyaar baante chalo’.

Dr Suman Joshi sang the romantic ‘Kaliyon ne ghungat kholle’ and the patriotic ‘Kar chale ham’ while Dr Rozy Aneja from Ambala enlivened the pathos with her song ‘Gairon pe sitam’

Noted surgeon Dr Rupak, who has the experience of such concerts in London, captivated the audience with ‘Nee sayio’. Jainendra Singh of AIR was the compere of the show.

Camp on waterborne diseases

Chandigarh, June 17
The Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension, Panjab University, organised a one-day awareness camp in Sarangpur Village on the prevention and care of waterborne diseases here today. More than 50 women from the village participated in the camp.

Dr Sween, Director of the centre, said prevention is easier than cure.

One needs to guard against the danger of food and water getting contaminated in the wake of the forthcoming monsoon to guard against cholera, typhoid, dysentery and diarrhoea.

Dr R.K. Khullar, additional chief medical officer from PU, Upasana Walia, Government Hospital, Sector 16 and Ms Bhupinder Kaur, a former sarpanch of the village, also spoke on the occasion.

Cataract camp

Mohali, June 17
A free cataract surgery camp was organised at Rotary Vocational Training Centre, Rotary Bhavan, Sector 70, here today.

Patients were initially examined by a team of five eye specialists and those needing surgery were operated upon at the JP Eye Hospital.

Amit Chauhan and Raghav Shingal reached the final of the under-14 category beating their respective opponents Gagandeep Singh 6-1, 6-2 and Jaiwardhan 6-2, 6-4 on the penultimate day of the L.D. Kapoor Memorial YMCA Yonex Total Tennis Championship held at YMCA Total Tennis complex, here today.

In girls u-12 category, Sheshna Sekhri had mixed success winning over first-time semi-finalist Harkirat Kaur but she lost to Ravnoor Kaur in the u- 14 category.

In doubles, the top-seeded duo Sunny and Sachin Patil were the first to reach the final defeating Gauravinder Singh Toor and Shobit 6-3, 6-2. Now, they will face the fourth seeded pair of Devinder Kapoor and Karan Patnaik, who defeated the second seeded pair of Akshat Joshi and Nikhil Hooda in straight sets at 6-1, 7-5.

Harkarman is u-4 boys champ

Chandigarh, June 17
Harkarman emerged winner in the under-4 (boys) while Pratibha won among girls in the 4-6 year category in the speed skating on the opening day of St Xavier’s Roller Skating Carnival held at Skating Rink, Sector 10, here today.

In the roller hockey senior men’s event, Chandigarh registered a thumping victory over Sangrur 5-1. The Kurukshetra team gave a tough fight to the Patiala team but finally lost the match 4-5. In the sub-junior boys’ group KB DAV, Chandigarh team defeated Rollar Hawk team 4-1 while AKSIPS team beat Sangrur team 4-1. In another match, Kurukshetra team defeated the Blue Birds, Panchkula team 3-0.

As many as 300 skaters from Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana are taking part under different age groups in this two-day skating meet in which events in Roller Skating, Roller Hockey, Speed Skating and artistic skating are being held.
