Raids to check gambling: In an attempt to check gambling under the pretext of one digit lottery in the infamous Rani Jhansi market near the railway station, the city police raided at two shops on Tuesday. Tarsem Singh of Nanak Nagari, Kewal Krishan Gidderanwali, Sumit Kumar and Gaurav were arrested under Section 13A and 3/67 of the Gambling Prevention Act. The police took two computers in possession being used by them.

Magazine released: Mr Atinder Pal Singh, President, Shiromani Akali Dal, (International) and former MP, released a monthly magazine titled “Anakh” here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Singh said the magazine simultaneously released in Canada would bring forth social, economical and the agricultural problems being faced by farmers in the state.
Rs 3 lakh snatched: Two unidentified motorcyclists on Wednesday snatched Rs 3 lakh from Manjinder Singh of Kahlon Transport here when he was returning after withdrawing money from UTI Bank. According to information, the incident took place at Maqbool Road in civil line area. Manjinder Singh was attending a call at his mobile phone when the accused snatched the bag containing the money. The police has registered a case in this regard.

NFL Director takes charge: Mr V.K. Sharma has taken over as Director (Technical) of National Fertilizers Limited (NFL). Before this, he was functioning as Chief General Manager of the Bathinda unit of the company. An electrical engineer by profession, Mr Sharma has been associated with NFL since 1974. During these years, he served in Nangal, Vijaipur and Bathinda units of NFL in various capacity.

Man kills wife: An advise to her husband to stop drinking costs a woman her life. A 24-year-old woman, a resident of Nizamat Nagar, on Wednesday night succumbed to her burn injuries inflicted on her two days back by her drunkard husband when she tried to stop him from drinking. The husband, Rajkumar, a labourer, doused the woman, Mala, with kerosene and set her on fire. The victim has reportedly said this in her dying declaration in front of the magistrate.
JE arrested: A Junior Engineer with Kandi Water Shed, Hoshiarpur, Teerath Singh, has been arrested on charges of amassing property more than his known sources of income. 7 injured in accident: Seven persons of a family, including three women, sustained serious injuries when the car in which they were travelling, rammed against a tree at nearby Panchchat village here on Thursday. The injured were identified as Surinder Kaur, Kashmir Kaur, Maninder, Gurpreet, Onkar, Raj Kumar and Rajdeep, all residents of Palahi village. All the injured were admitted to the local Civil Hospital. Raj Kumar, whose condition was stated to be critical, was referred to the DMC, Ludhiana.
