Company removes contact lens solution from market

Chandigarh, May 26
In spite of the fact that Bausch & Lomb has announced its decision to permanently remove its ReNu MoistureLoc contact lens solution from worldwide markets, after a link was established between the product and a potentially blinding eye infection, the solution continues to be sold in many chemist shops in the region.

The product was recalled from markets worldwide on May 15, after it was found that the product could be causing fusarium eye fungus infection. Several instances of users of this contact lens cleaner developing the infection were first reported in Hong Kong, Singapore and the United States. An estimated 100 cases of the infection were reported in the past 10 months, with the worse cases requiring a cornea transplant.

While Bausch & Lomb had asked its dealers to recall the product and announced a voluntary product exchange programme with ReNu MultiPlus formula (to include both US-imported and locally manufactured MoistureLoc), many retailers are still unaware of the development and continue to sell the product. Chemists in Ludhiana, Amritsar and some areas of Chandigarh and in the smaller towns of Kalka and Khanna, when contacted by TNS, said the Bausch & Lomb dealers had so far not communicated to them about the product withdrawl.

Dr Ravijit Singh, Medical Superintendent of Dr Daljit Singh Eye Hospital, Amritsar, informed TNS that no cases of fusarium infection among the users of the MoistureLoc cleaner, had come to his notice. ‘‘There is an inherent risk of infection among the contact lens users. Though we have heard about the product causing keratitis and fusarium infection, there has not been an abnormal rise in these cases,’’ he said.

‘‘However,’’ said Dr G. S. Dhami of Dhami Eye Care Hospital, Ludhiana, ‘‘the cases may not be reported to us because doctors always caution the patients regarding the risk to infection in contact lens users. Those developing these infections could be going to opticians directly,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Bausch & Lomb has already announced that their manufacturing plant in India will shift production from MoistureLoc to the ReNu MultiPlus formula. Mr J.P. Singh, Managing Director, Bausch & Lomb, said, ‘‘We still do not know what is increasing the relative risk of fusarium infection in unusual circumstances, though we are investigating this link. We have discontinued the MoistureLoc formula in India, even though we have seen no unusual increases in the incidence of fusarium infections. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and continue to put the safety of our consumers in India as our primary concern.’

Chandigarh, May 26
In an attempt to keep its coaches updated, the Punjab Sports Department has planned to introduce refresher courses and upgrade programmes for its coaches in various disciplines.

This is a first-of-its-kind attempt to hone the hidden talent in sports in the country.

“This is just the first step in a broad master plan, which we call ‘Vision 2010’, that looks to focus on the nurturing of sports from the grassroots to champion level. The sole objective of this effort is to raise the bar for Indian players in various disciplines and update our coaches with latest technology in sports,” said Pargat Singh, Director, Sports, Punjab.

Briefing about the programme, he said: “We have chosen basketball first. We have made arrangements for nine sessions to train basketball coaches of Punjab and other states with famous US-based NBA legend Robert Reid. We look to expose our basketball coaches to cutting-edge techniques and strategies employed by those who train teams in the US. Planned in the first week of June, the clinic will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana.”

As the clinic immediately follows the 57th National Junior Basketball Championship, set to be held in Ludhiana from May 27 to June 3, the department is exploring options of inviting visiting coaches and top players of the tournament to stay on and benefit from the clinic.

An invitation has also been sent to the Sports Authority of India to send their experts in various sports fields.

The schedule for the trip has been carefully planned to make the best of this exercise. Nine sessions in three days will broadly cover diverse aspects of the game like nurturing talent and improving skills; technical nuances and latest advancements thereof; injury management and feedback of the session.

“It has become quite imperative to expose our coaches to the changes taking place around the world in their respective disciplines,” opined Pargat Singh.

“We have set aside a fund of Rs 2 crore for the purpose and every discipline will get equal importance. There will be similar type of programmes for hockey, football, athletics alike,” he concluded.
