Rare surgery performed at Sohana hospital

Mohali, May 25
Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib Charitable Eye Hospital Trust, Sohana, claimed to have performed a rare surgery of interstitial hernia at its multi-specialty wing yesterday.

Dr Pankaj Garg, Consultant-Surgeon, operated upon 86-year-old man with a problem of interstitial hernia on right side of abdomen.

According to the surgeon, very few cases of this type of hernia are reported in the world literature.

In interstitial hernia, intestines come between different muscle layers of abdominal work what made this case even rarer that it was a sliding type of hernia.

Moreover, doing such a complicated operation in an 86-year-old man was a formidable surgical and anesthetic challenge.

According to the hospital authorities, the patient is doing work and moving comfortably after the operation and the case would be sent for reporting in international surgical journal.

First tri-city tennis championship

Mohali, May 25
The Mohali District Lawn Tennis Association (MDLTA) will hold its first Tri-city Lawn Tennis Championship from June 9 to 11 at the State Institute of Health & Family Welfare Complex tennis courts, Phase-VI, here.

Briefing the schedule here today, Mr Tilak R. Sarangal, IAS, Chief Patron and President, MDLTA, said, “The championship will be open to three categories viz. students between 8 to 18 years, adults and the veterans above 40 years”.

 

The entry fee for the participation will be Rs.100/- per participant. The interested players may apply up to June 5 to the General Secretary, MDLTA.

Swimming trials

Chandigarh, May 25
Selection trials for the Chandigarh swimming team in the sub-junior and junior age groups will be held at the swimming pool in Sector-23-D here on May 29. The team selected will represent Chandigarh in the 23rd Sub-Junior National Aquatic Championship, to be held at Bangalore from June 18 to 21.

Those desirous to take part should get their names registered at the swimming pool by 6 pm on May 28.

Kapil in archery team

Chandigarh, May 25
Seventeen-year-old local archer Kapil has been selected in four-member national squad in the recurve division for the second Asian Grand Archery Championship, to be held at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from July 21 to 27.

Kapil earned the berth with his performances during the All-India Ranking Tournament at Amritsar in April and national selection trials at Delhi recently.

Chandigarh Archery Association president Jasdeep Singh announced a cash prize of Rs 11,000 for him.

St John’s (B), Vivek academy win

St John’s Cricket Academy (B) beat ICL Eleven by 114 runs in a league match of the first Hot Weather St John’s Under-13 Cricket Trophy at St John’s High School, Sector 26, here today.

Batting first, St John’s scored 177 for 7 in 30 overs. In reply, ICL were bowled out for a paltry 63 runs in 21 overs.

In the second match, Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy beat St Soldier’s Cricket Academy by 16 runs.

Batting first, Vivek academy were bowled for 70 runs in 24 overs. In reply, St Soldier’s were bowled for 54 runs.

St Stephen’s emerge champs

Panchkula, May 25
St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, Chandigarh, won the Satluj Under-14 Hot Weather Invitation Cricket Tournament beating hosts Satluj Public School, Sector 3, Panchkula, in the finals here today.

In a 25-over match, St Stephen’s scored 205 runs (Anurag 47, Ankush 51, Jaspreet 53, Harman-21, Shubkarman 4).

However, Satluj School were bowled out for 131 runs in 22 overs (Rishi Raj 60).

For Stephen’s School, Anurag got 3 wickets for 17 runs, Harman 1 for 11 and Hitesh 2 for 13.

Anurag was declared best all-rounder, Ankush best batsman and Rahul best wicketkeeper of the match.

Applications sought for more liquor sale licences

Chandigarh, May 25
The UT Excise and Taxation Department has invited applications for the grant of 36 more retail sale licences of country liquor (L-14A) for the remaining period of the financial year 2006-07, an official press release said here today.

The outlets have been categorised in two categories. In the A category, the licence fee will be Rs 40 lakh and the annual quota 57908-9375 PL in each licence, while for category B it will be Rs 25 lakh and 36193 PL, respectively.

The department has asked the applicants to apply on or before June 6. The draw of lots shall take place on June 7 at Tagore Theatre, Sector 18. Successful applicants would be required to deposit 30 per cent licence fee on the date of draw of lots on the spot and remaining 70 per cent in two instalments by September 30. In case of companies, the complete fees will be payable within 24 hours of the grant of licence.
