WHO team visits state institute of health

Mohali, May 19
A World Health Organisation (WHO) team visited the State Institute of Health and Family Welfare (SIHFW) here today to see the working of the institute with regard to training and lodging facilities available there.

The team comprised Antic Frice and Anagha Khot among others and the Director, Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CHBI), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

Mr T.R. Sarangal, Secretary, Health-cum-Managing Director, Punjab Health Systems Corporation, said the main purpose of the WHO team’s visit to the institute was to explore the possibility of selecting the institute as a WHO collaborative centre for international trainings and residential courses, mainly for students from South-East Asian Regional Countries.

He added that the team was satisfied with the infrastructure for trainings and facilities for lodging in the institute. Dr Y.C. Markan, Director-Principal, SIHFW, and Dr P.C. Singla, accompanied the WHO team around the institute.

Mr Sarangal further stated that the institute was a well-designed complex spread over 5 acres.

Lecture for dentists

The Chandigarh chapter of the Indian Dental Association has organised a lecture on implants in collaboration with Colgate here . The lecture was part of the CME programme to update dentists of this region in the field of implantology which deals with restoration of masticatory function, esthetics and speech of patients who have lost one or more teeth.

It was attended by about 85 delegates. The lecture was delivered by Dr Survarna Nene, a practising dental surgeon from Pune.

Kids roped into soccer mania

Coca-Cola, corporate partner of FIFA World Cup, is holding a school activation programme to bring in the spirit and excitement of FIFA World Cup to schoolchildren across Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.

The programme began today at Mount Carmel School, Chandigarh, and Gurukul School, Panchkula.

The first-of-its kind initiative invites young football enthusiasts to celebrate the sport of football in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup.

The programme will see children practising football skills, as an inflatable FIFA World Cup ‘Super Footer’ (goal post) game and will be taken to school across the city. The goal post will have four holes, each worth 50 points, 100 point and 150 points, students will need to pass the ball through these holes and accumulate brownie points. On the basis of points achieved, the young enthusiasts stand a chance to win goodies like t-shirts, caps, international Coca-Cola team wrist bands, mobile phones and even Coke PET bottles.

As a run-up to the World Cup, this sport with the inflatable ‘Super Footer’ game is also being played in more than 40 countries across the world.

They have also launched a ‘11 Hindustani’ contest to search for 11 lucky Indians who will get a chance to see the soccer World Cup in Germany. One winner will be selected from Chandigarh and given an opportunity to fly to Germany to witness the FIFA World Cup live in action.

FCI team wins hockey match

Chandigarh, May 19
The FCI team registered an easy win against MTNL team 5-0 in the hockey match of the Public Sector Hockey Tournament held at the hockey stadium, Sector 42, here today.

In the one-sided affair tie, it was Satwinder Singh of the FCI team who proved to be tough for the MTNL players to resist. He opened the team's account in the 2nd minute by executing a superb field goal. Two minutes later, he dispatched the ball home again followed by another goal in 9th minute leading his team to comfortable position at 3-0.

The players of the FCI dominated the proceedings and scored two more field goals during the 15th and 16th minute through Bhim Kumar and Amit guiding the team to have victory over the MTNL 5-0.

In the second match of the day, BPCL team defeated the hosts ONGC team 1-0. The BPCL forced a penalty stroke in the 25th minute of the play. It was Deepak of the BPCL who executed the move leading his team 1-0. The score could have been much higher if the seven penalty corners forced by the BPCL had not gone wasted.

The ONGC team got a golden chance during the 55th minute, when they earned a penalty corner. However, they could not pounce upon the chance to score an equaliser and lost the match 0-1.

Softball trials tomorrow

The trials for selecting the Chandigarh junior softball team ( boys and girls) for participation in the 24th Junior National Softball Championship (boys and girls), being held at Hyderabad from June 6 to June 11, will be held on May 21 at 4.30 p.m. at the Government College for Men , Sector 11.

Those interested should come with their age proof certificate. The players born on or before January 1989are eligible.

Admn officials take pledge against terror

The Chandigarh Administration officials today pledged to oppose all forms of terrorism and violence. At a function, the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Lalit Sharma, administered pledge to the officers and officials of the Administration at the deluxe and additional deluxe building at the secretariat.

Anti-Terrorism Day is observed on May 21 every year. May 21, this year, falls on a Sunday and so the oath taking ceremony was held today.
