Seminar on plantation
: A seminar was held at the Jhamku Devi Senior Secondary School at Dhora Mehrajpur village on Saturday. Dr Desh Bir Singh and Dr Kingsley explained the different types of arid fruit crops that could be grown commercially.

AMRITSAR
One held on rape charge: Gurmej Singh, alias Geja, was arrested on Saturday for outraging the modesty of a minor girl. He was arrested on the complaint of the father of the girl and booked under Sections 376 and 342 of the IPC.

HOSHIARPUR
Notice to Chief Secy: Mr Kulwant Singh Saini, general secretary, Punjab Nagar Palika Karamchari Sangathan, has served a legal notice on the Chief Secretary, the Secretary, Department of Legal and Legislative Affairs, the Principal Secretary, Department of Local Government, the Principal Secretary, Department of Finance, and the Director, Local Government, and called upon the state government not to abolish octroi without giving an alternative source of revenue to municipal councils. It has been stated that octroi is the main source of income of municipal councils.

Case of sexual exploitation: The police on Friday booked Sony of the Mohalla Naloian Chowk here under Sections 376 and 506 of the IPC on the charge of sexual exploitation of a teenaged girl in the name of marriage. The 16-year-old girl alleged that Sony developed relations with her, raped her a number of times and after she became pregnant, refused to marry her and threatened her.

Drugs seized: The police arrested Kamaljeet Singh of New Deep Nagar here and Dawinder of Mahilpur and seized 14.5 gm of smack from them on Friday. The police also arrested Jaspal Singh, alias Jagga, and seized 1 kg of poppy husk from him on Saturday night.

Medical camp:
Over 100 patients underwent a free health check up and were given free medicines at a medical camp organised by the Sri Devi Talaab Charitable Hospial at the Bagichi Wala Mandir in Sodal locality here on Sunday. The team of doctors included Dr G.S. Saluja, Dr Jashniv Kapoor, Dr Ajay Yadav, Dr Dimple and Dr Ajay Yadav.

Principal honoured: Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, Principal of the Dayanand Ayurvedic College, has been honoured by the DAV Managing Committee, New Delhi, for his services towards ayurveda and the college, a press release said. Dr Sharma was felicitated at a special function by Ms Sheila Dixit, the Delhi Chief Minister and Mr Raghunandan Lal Bhatia, the Kerala Governor, with a commendation letter, a shawl and a memento.

VISIT: Students of Class XII (commerce) of BVM Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, visited Vardhman Spinning and General Mills here on Saturday to have a practical knowledge of its working. They attained the knowledge of organisational chart, TPM (total productivity maintenance), human resource management and accounting procedures.

RATION DISTRIBUTED: The Punjab Nishkam Sewa Dal organised its 31st ration-distribution function to the needy women at Sankat Mochan Temple, Shahpur Road, here on Sunday. Mr Sushil Prashar, president of the dal, and other members distributed rations among 65 destitute women.

Legal awareness
: ‘Rashtriya Mazdoor Kanooni Sahayata Diwas’ week is being observed in the district from May 1 to 7. Camps are being held under the direction of the District and Sessions Judge and president District Legal Aid Cell, Bhiwani Mr Ramendra Jain, Chief Judicial Magistrate and the secretary of the cell, Mr J.B. Gupta, at various places to impart knowledge to labourers about their legal rights.

HISAR
Awareness campaign: Nearly 40 to 60 per cent of diseases can be prevented by maintaining cleanliness and frequently washing hands with soap. This was stated by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Pankaj Aggarwal, while addressing a function organised as part of an awareness campaign at Muklan village in the district on Saturday. A social organisation Adent, chosen by the District Rural Development Agency, had organised the programme under the Total Rural Sanitation Campaign.

KARNAL
4 theft cases solved:
District police claimed to have solved four cases of thefts in different parts of the city in the recent past with the arrest of two suspects. CIA nabbed the two suspects, Om Prakash of Panipat and Sanjay of Samastipur Bihar, after a tip-off. They were produced in a city court, which remanded them to police custody for three days till May 8. During interrogation, they admitted that they committed two thefts. Stolen items, including four LPG gas cylinders and other household items worth Rs. 29,000 were also recovered from them.

YAMUNANAGAR
492 cases settled:
As many as 492 cases including 117 civil suits, were disposed of at a Lok Adalat organised by the District Legal Services Authority at the district courts complex here on Saturday. A total of 557 cases were put in the adalat which was held under the guidance of chairman of the Authority, Mr Virander Singh. The Chief Judicial Magistrate and secretary of the authority Mr Baseshar Singh, said that lok adalats besides speedily disposing of cases also saved money of litigants.
