258 donate blood for thalassaemics

Chandigarh, May 7
The Thalassaemic Children Welfare Association (TCWA), Chandigarh, organised a blood donation camp, the first in a series of six blood donation camps to be held by it this season, at the PGI here today. The aim of the camps is to commemorate International Thalassaemic Day, to meet the shortage of blood during summer months so as to save the lives of serious patients and thalassaemics.

The camp was inaugurated by Dr K.K. Talwar, Director, PGI, and chief patron of the association. He distributed gifts among children to mark International Thalassaemia Day. Dr Talwar emphasised the need to make greater efforts for preventing the disease and containing its spread.

As many as 258 persons donated blood at the camp, which was conducted buy a team of doctors and technicians headed by Dr Neelam Marwaha, Head of Department of Blood Transfusion and member of the advisory board of the association.

The others are scheduled for May 20, June 4, June 17, July 2 and July 15.

Blood donation at school

As many as 150 units of blood were collected in a blood donation camp organised at Hansraj Public School, here yesterday. Students, teachers and parents joined hands for this noble cause.

Mr Vijay Kumar, Principal, said Justice Amarjeet Chaudhary and Mr Yudhbir Singh, Registrar of Kurukshetra University, visited the school and motivated the donors. A visitor, Mr K.S. Sodhi, also got motivated and donated blood.

Mohali beat Kapurthala in Markan Trophy match

Mohali, May 7
Mohali beat Kapurthala on the basis of the first innings lead in the two-day match of the Inter-District Under-17 Tournament for the ML Markan Trophy at the PCA stadium here today.

Resuming from their overnight score of 42 for 2, Mohali put on 229 for 8 in 89 overs in the first innings.

An unbeaten knock of 58 runs by Harpreet Singh and 54 by Jaskaran were the highlights of the Mohali team’s innings.

For Kapurthala, Krishan was the most successful bowler. He got 4 for 56 and was followed by Baljinder who got 2 for 52.

In the second innings, Kapurthala were 71 for 5 when the game finished. Mohali won the match on the basis of the first innings lead.

Brief scores: Kapurthala (1st innings): 134 all out in 76 overs.

Mohali (1st innings): 229 for 8 in 89 overs (Harpreet Singh 58 not out, Yuvraj Singh 54, Jaskaran Singh 35, Krishan 4 for 56, Baljinder 2 for 52).

Kapurthala (2nd innings): 71 for 5 in 31 overs (Krishan 25, Karan Sharma 18, Harpreet Golu 4 for 18, Gunjot 1 for 32).

In another between Jalandhar and Chandigarh held at Jalandhar, Chandigarh thrashed Jalandhar on the basis of the first innings lead.

Brief score: Chandigarh (1st innings): 399.

Jalandhar (1st innings): 293 all out in 90 overs (Pargat 62, Abhishek 43, Robin 81, Anshul Tripathi 4 for 50, Himanshu Chawla 2 for 56).

PCA decision on qualification for office-bearers

Mohali, May 7
An extraordinary general body meeting of the Punjab Cricket Association was held in Dhruv Pandove Conference Hall, PCA stadium, here today. The decision on eligibility for being the office-bearers of the association was the highlight of the meeting.

On the lines of the board’s constitution, it was decided that only those having good knowledge of the matters associated with the game would be eligible for being elected as office-bearers of the association.

A number of other amendments were also made to remove ambiguities and clarify various provisions in the light of the present context. Some of the clauses that had become obsolete with the passage of time were deleted or substituted.

Other amendments approved in the meeting were:

* Keeping in view the creation of new districts, amendments have been made to associate these with the PCA as associate members in the first instance.

* Keeping in view the development in the standard of the game in some of the minor districts that have shown tremendous improvement in terms of their performance and standard of cricket, the number of nominees of district associations on the executive committee has been increased from 8 to 10.

DAV cagers pip NPS

The DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, boys’ team thrashed the New Public School (NPS), Sector 18, team 70-61 on the final day of the Junior State Basketball Championship for boys and girls held at New Public School here today.

Though at half time, New Public School lads were leading 29-22 but they could not prevail upon DAV cagers and lost the match. The main contributors for the winners were Gurvinder 25 points, Vinay 9 points and Supreet 5 points while Amanjot, Ashish and Bhavneet scored 18, 11 and 8 points, respectively, for the New Public School side.

In another final tie in the girls’ group, the New Public School team beat the Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, team 67-29. Pinki 25, Sonika 19 and Sanchi 16 were the main contributors for the NPS team whereas Sheena and Priyanka scored 8 and 4 points, respectively for the losers.

Rudraksh bags sub-junior karate title

Rudraksh Gupta bagged the sub-junior title in the below-15 kg category in the First Inter-Club Karate Tournament organised by Anchal International School, Sector 41, here today.

The overall championship was won by Ryan International School, Sector 49. Around 150 players participated in the two-day meet that concluded today.

Mr Shiv Kumar was the chief guest on the occasion.

The results: sub junior (below 15 kg): Rudraksh Gupta 1, Harry 2; below 20 kg: Anikhet 1, Inderveer 2; below 25 kg: Harvinder 1, Ajitosh 2 Paritosh 3, Maghu 4; below 30 kg: Kashish 1, Sahil 2, Rashit 3, Suraj 4; below 35 kg: Narinder 1, Dheeraj 2, Yuvraj 3, Bavekjot 4; below 45 kg: Vishwaprem 1, Divey 2, Utkarsh 3;above 45 kg: Sanchit 1, Sumant 2, Ishan 3.

An all-round performance by Sarpreet Gill (45 and 2 for 18) enabled Sports Club, Panchkula, to beat Fun Republic by 49 runs in the league match and ensure berth in the semifinal of the Fighter Inter Institutional Cricket Tournament being played at Satluj Public School, Sector 4, here today.

Brief scores: Sports Club, Panchkula, 187 for 8 in 25 overs (Sarpreet Gill 45, Shankar 25, Rohit Singh 37, Jorawar 46, Gopal 5 for 30).

Fun Republic: 138 all out in 18.4 overs (Gopal 20, Munish 22, Jaswinder 17, Parveen 2 for 19, Sarpreet Gill 2 for 18).

In another match, a fine knock by Ajay Sharma (82) and Vickey (70) enabled District Bar Association, Panchkula, to beat HDFC by 16 runs.
