UGC awards research project to Prof

Ludhiana, April 29
Dr Sunil Khosla of the Postgraduate Department of Political Science, Arya College, has brought laurels to the college for having been awarded a research project--Human Rights and the Judiciary: Vision and Reality--by the University Grants Commission under the financial assistance scheme for teachers working in colleges and universities.

The duration of the research project is two years and he will get a grant of Rs 57,000. The study focuses on the expansive interpretation of Article 21 of the Indian Constitution with endorsement of socio-economic rights in the landmark judgments of the Supreme Court of India like adequate nutrition, clothing and shelter, provision of medical facilities as an obligation of the state, environment protection, pollution free air and water. It also concentrates on the issue of adequate management and control of traffic and vehicular pollution.

The study seeks to investigate human rights jurisprudence in the light of the winds of liberalisation and globalisation.

President of the Arya College Managing Committee Saathi Vijay Kumar and Principal Dr. S. M. Sharma congratulated Dr. Khosla for his contribution to the cause of human rights education in general and to the discipline in particular.

The president and the secretary of the Arya College Teachers' Unit, Prof. Devinder Joshi, and Prof. V. K. Bhardwaj also extended their felicitations to their colleague.

MA paper, too, out of pattern

Doraha, April 29
The political science paper of MA-I of Panjab University has left students and teachers confused. They complained that the paper had not been set according to the pattern prescribed by the university.

Dr Kuldeep Singh, political science lecturer at Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, said as per the syllabus, under the western political thought, the candidates were required to attempt any four questions out of eight. However, this time the candidates were asked to attempt five questions.

“The students had been conditioned to attempt only four questions in the three-hour duration,” he said.

Apart from demanding a minimum of 10 grace marks, the students and teachers have demanded suitable action against the paper-setter as last year, too, the students had to face a similar problem and had to be given grace marks.

College bids farewell to Principal

Ludhiana, April 29
A farewell party was organised by the staff club of SCD Government College in honour of the Principal, Mr D.S.Gill. Members of the staff praised Mr Gill for his rare qualities of the head and heart. A student and teacher of mathematics, Mr Gill believes in rational thinking, human sympathies and progressive thought. During his eventful career as a student and teacher, he always championed the cause of the underprivileged.

Dr P.S.Sohi, in his speech,said Mr Gill was a staunch advocate of social equality and freedom of thought and action. Prof B.S.Parihaar lauded the Principal for singing Faiz, Ghalib and other masters. "His command over language is amazing", he said.

Prof Darbara Singh, Vice-Principal, in his speech, admired Mr Gill's administrative abilities. Professor Jaipal, a senior faculty member,cited some incidents from Mr Gill's career that spoke for his firm decision-making ability, boldness and strength of character. The speakers highlighted the work done during the Principal's brief tenure.

Mr Gill thanked the faculty for their cooperation and wished the college a glorious future.

Special children perform at annual day

There was not a dry eye in the Rotary Bhavan when mentally challenged students of Nirdosh presented rhymes, dances and songs with perfection at the annual day function held on the Rotary Club premises.

The chief guest was Education Minister Harnam Das Johar. He was happy with the performances and hardwork of Inner Wheel Club members that runs the school. He presented a cheque for Rs 51,000 to the club.

The principal, Mr Surat Singh, read out the annual report of the school. The students' faces lit up when they received the awards. The staff member who was behind the dancing and singing was also awarded.

Nirdosh is dear to Inner Wheel members and every year a new team takes charge of running the institution. This year Ms Ruby Fernandaz and Ms Madhu Qamra motivated the students of the school to perform outside the school.

The aim of the school is to make the students independent. The students presented two cultural items at Spring Carnival held at the Rotary Bhavan.

Sumit has been trained in hosiery work and Ankur Mehra, another student, is being trained to handle a general store. A juice bar to be installed at Sutlej Hospital will be under the charge of Vivek Bansal while Sahil Ghai and Vivek Bedi will be working in a moveable PCO booth which will be put up outside Nirdosh school.

Green Grove students visit PAP

“It was an exhilarating experience,” said a jubilant group of 80 students of Green Grove Public School, Khanna, when they returned from a visit to the PAP campus, Phillaur, here today.

Students of classes VIII to XII spent the day at Maharaja Ranjit Singh Police Academy. The day began with an informative discourse by Dr D. J. Singh, Deputy Director of the PAP.

The students also interacted with the ADGP of J & K who was present at the PAP.

Quiz contest

A quiz contest by the Physics Club was organised at Bhartiya Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Udham Singh Nagar, here today. Students from classes IX, X and XII participated.

The winner was Einstein team followed by Bhor team. principal Sunil Arora gave away the prizes.

Dental camp

a four-day dental check-up camp at Guru Nanak International Public School, Model Town, ended today. More than 2,000 students were examined. The efforts of doctors were appreciated by the management, staff and parents of the students.

Vedic paper reading

A Vedic paper reading and declamation contest was organised today at DAV Public School, BRS Nagar, by the Ved Prachar Mandal in order to inculcate moral values among the youth. It was presided over by Principal R. S. Patial.

Kanav, Akansha and Divyanshu won the first, second and third prizes, respectively. In the declamation contest, Harsimran, Parag and Aayush came first, second and third, respectively.

Mr Roshan Lal Arya, chief secretary of the Arya Mandal, said the competition aimed at awakening the youth to realise the importance of Indian culture.

Annual day

BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School organised its annual prize distribution function here today. Air Cmde Anil Chopra was the chief guest.

Principal Paramjit Kaur apprised parents of the activities and achievements of the school. The students presented a cultural programme on the occasion.

Waste management

A seminar on waste management was held at Bhai Isher Singh Memorial Senior Secondary School, Bhanor, today. The seminar was organised by the Punjab State Technical Department, Chandigarh. District Science Supervisor Virinder Sharma was the chief guest.

Lions Club adopts school

The Lions Club, Ludhiana Sutlej, has adopted a government school in Kundanpuri under which it will bear the expenses of education of the children.

At a function organised here today,Mr R.D. Sharma, president of the club, said around 150 students of Government Elementary Central School, Kundanpuri, would be provided with books, notebooks, uniforms and other necessities. All children belonged to poor families and were not able to afford the cost of education.

At the function the club gave away three tables for class teachers and installed a water cooler in the school. All students were given uniform shoes.

Mr Rajiv Lochan Mahajan, Mr Kuljeet Sethi, Mr Pradeep Maheshwari, Mr Yogesh Bansal, Arvind Rai and Mr Rakesh Gupta, members of the club, were also present on the occasion.

NCC motivation camp at school

Ludhiana, April 29
An interactive-cum-motivation session for NCC cadets was organised at Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, under 3 Punjab girls Battalion, NCC Ludhiana, yesterday.

About 450 students and staff attended the lecture delivered by Col S. K. Varni, group commander of the NCC group Headquarters here. He was welcomed by the Principal, Mr S. C. Saxena, along with Ms Chander Sharma, caretaker of the NCC.

A movie was shown to the cadets to educate them about the organisation, history and incentives of the NCC, besides the activities where they could participate during the training year.

Lt Col Avtar Singh, commanding officer of the unit, Lt Kulbinder Sandhu, administrative officer along with subedar Major, PI staff, were also present.

Colonel Avtar said such interactive sessions to motivate the students for joining the NCC were being organised in other educational institutions also.

Later a discussion on how to promote NCC in schools and colleges and motivate cadets for Republic Day was held.
