Stress laid on voluntary blood donation movement Chandigarh, April 29 Speaking at the function, the president of the Federation of Blood Donors Organisation, Dr Debashish Gupta, said voluntary donors were the safest donors and should be encouraged. "The national average of blood donation is around 53 per cent but there are some states which are lagging behind. There is need to target these states to build up the movement. Our endeavour should be to phase out replacement donors and make blood donation a voluntary exercise alone," Dr Gupta stated. Recalling his experiences at various blood donation camps, Mr Rajan Kashyap, Information Commissioner, Punjab, said he was overwhelmed to see participation from people from all walks of society. "At a camp in Balachaur, a man who had lost both his arms in an accident came to donate blood while a rickshaw puller in Nawanshar is playing a big role in motivating the common man to donate blood," he added. He pointed out that there was a need to network the various blood banks to enable blood donors to obtain blood from any bank in times of need. Presenting the vote of thanks, Mr Apurba Ghosh, general secretary of the Federation of Blood Donors Organisation of India, said the youths needed to be involved in popularising blood donation among the masses. He said a red revolution was the need of the hour. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Kanta Swaroop Krishan, honorary general secretary of the city's Blood Bank Society, drew the attention of the delegates to the need for a master card to keep record of blood donations by an individual. Earlier, as many as 43 students from Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh were today honoured at the Rotary and Blood Bank Resource Centre and awarded prizes by Ms Krishan and Dr Gupta. The students were winners of a quiz competition held in 22 states across the country simultaneously during 2005-06. They took vow to motivate the blood donors of tomorrow. The competition was sponsored by the National Council for Science and Technology, New Delhi. Speaking at the function, Ms Krishan said, "It's a delight to see the upcoming generation strengthening the blood donation movement. We hope the students will carry this mission forward to make our world a healthy one." PGI blood bank to get accreditation The Blood Bank of PGIMER became the third bank in the country to be provided accreditation. "This is to maintain quality standards in blood donation. The Ministry of Health, Government of India, has identified private and government agencies to grant accreditation to blood banks across the country. Chennai is the next in line for accreditation," Dr Gupta said. |
