Himachal girl shows there is life beyond HIV

Pooja Thakur is no ordinary girl. All of 22 years and she has endured a lifetime of trauma only to bypass pain on the road to joy. She knows happiness is as much her right as of those living without HIV/AIDS. And as president of the Chandigarh Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS — a group of HIV+ persons from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal and Chandigarh — she is helping others in her league believe it too.

Balancing rhetoric with reality

Miss India Universe Neha Kapur is well aware of the spurious attractions of fame. No wonder she is firmly in control of life and the changes it has unleashed post Miss India pageant. ‘‘Change is a constant in my life and I don’t mind where it takes me as long as I don’t lose sight of the land,’’ says Kapur, the city girl on a country song. In Chandigarh on the eve of the commencement of her training for the Miss Universe pageant, Neha presented herself more as a girl out of home than ramp.

New park to come up in city
Chandigarh, April 18
In its commitment to upgrade and provide new infrastructure in southern sectors of the city, the Chandigarh Administration has conceived a new park-cum-recreational centre in Sector 23.

Anganwadi workers stage rally

The Anganwadi Mulazaam Union, Punjab, today staged a rally at Matka Chowk here in protest against the non-acceptance of its demands. Women from all over Punjab took part in the protest. The call for the protest was given by the All-India Federation of Anganwadi Workers and Helpers.

Development plan for city soon

A Memorandum of Agreement for Reform has been designed by the Ministry of Urban Affairs with 10 cities, including Chandigarh, where city development plans will be implemented. As many as 24 projects have been cleared for the reform.

Hyacinth can widen utility of biogas plants: study
Chandigarh, April 18
A team of researchers from the Department of Renewable Energy Sources, College of Technology and Engineering, Udaipur, has announced that water hyacinth (a common polluting fresh water weed) can be used for the production of biogas. The weed can be used either alone or along with cow dung, the most commonly used material in biogas plants.

PU bars B.Ed colleges from counselling
Chandigarh, April 18
Panjab University would not be allowing certain B.Ed colleges running in the state to participate in the counselling for admissions following the all- India test to be conducted by the university. The entrance test for admission to over 110 B.Ed colleges running in the state and affiliated to various universities would be conducted by Panjab University in the first week of July.

With a fine knock of 96 runs by Rohit Kashyap, the Chandigarh team consolidated its position by scoring 308 runs against Jalandhar in the first innings of the two-day match for the Sushil Bali Cricket Trophy being played at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today. Chandigarh won the toss and elected to bat first. Fine batting by Rohit (96) enabled the team to score 308 runs in 95 overs. The other scorers included Lovnish (37), Naveen (36) and Manan (30). For Jalandhar, R. Thappa was the main wicket taker. He claimed 4 for 68 followed by Pargat Singh 3 for 73.

Federation apathy leaves athletes in lurch
Chandigarh, April 18
Three athletes from the Sector 46 Sports Complex — Talwinder, Jaspreet and Luvneet — got the news of their selection in a camp a bit too late. Though the National Junior Athletics camp started at Jamshedpur on April 16, the information about their selection was conveyed to them last evening.
