MC razes encroachments in Bhargo Camp area
Jalandhar, April 15 For its rather bold demolition drive, the squad had to wade through stones flying in the air and loud vocal protests from the residents. The residents even broke window panes of the MC vehicles. Despite all apprehensions, hundreds of illegal structures were demolished, and rather peacefully. The demolition march was led by the Mayor, Mr Surinder Mahey, armed with orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court . Later in the drive to remove illegal encroachments, police officials, including the SP City (1), Dr Surinder Kumar Kalia, and senior officers of the corporation, including the Commissioner, Mr Satwant Singh Johal, arrived in the area. Officers of the MC’s Building and Engineering Branch were also present. Apprehensions of the situation going out of control were however averted, mostly with the efforts of the Mayor. He was seen going from house to house, explaining the situation to the agitated residents. The residents later calmed down and the squad went on removing hundreds of encroachments. Today’s operation was the biggest one to remove encroachments in the Bhargo Camp area. The roads in the area had turned into narrow paths with every other household extending its building’s boundaries. The Mayor alleged that the protests in the area today were politically motivated. He claimed that the operation went on peacefully. Mr Mahey even claimed that the residents had come out to help the authorities and some had themselves removed the encroached structures. Meanwhile, the former president of the Citizen Welfare and Protection Council, Mr Ramesh Karamvir, who had filed a case in 1997 against illegal encroachments in the area, alleged that the MC authorities had taken a long time in implementing the High Court’s orders. “They were fearing violent reactions from the residents,” he said. |

Jalandhar, April 15 Also, as many as 10,000 homeless people, belonging to scheduled castes, would be allotted “pucca” houses in the current financial year. Ambedkar here yesterday. “In areas falling within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporations and Municipal Councils, all developmental works will begin from slums and poor localities,” the minister said. He added that an amount of Rs 990 crore had been earmarked for face-lifting the cities of Punjab. The minister said that all government organisations, coming within ambit of the Punjab Welfare Department, would be shifted to Ambedkar Bhawans, which are proposed in all district headquarters. One of Ambedkar Bhawans was being set up within the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here, he added. |

He claimed that a senior engineer, Mr Rajindra Kumar, and two technicians, Rakesh Kumar and Harninder Singh, were also present on the spot. Meanwhile, an RCF union leader, Mr Sarabjeet Singh, alleged that the management had started victimising the witnesses of the incident.
