Chamba, April 14
The Centre is contemplating introducing helicopter taxi service to connect hill resorts of Himachal to promote tourism in a big way.

Ms Ambika Soni, Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, stated this while inaugurating a weeklong festival ‘Chamba Millennium’ here today. The millennium festivities got off to a traditional start. She also congratulated people of this region. Chamba town is located on the right bank of the Ravi and is celebrating 1000 years of its existence.

The minister said the new tourist circuits would be identified and developed in Himachal like in other states of the country to attract tourists from across the world. ‘Chamba Millennium’ will be an attraction to the tourists.

Referring to ancient monuments and heritage buildings in Himachal, she announced the Tourism and Culture Ministry would involve the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for the conservation and preservation of these monuments and heritage structures. Adequate funds would be provided to the ASI for the conservation and preservation of the monuments.

She stated the Tourism Ministry had the highest scope of employment because of tourism potential in our country.

Highlighting the significance of ‘Chamba Millennium’, she said the way in which the festival was being celebrated was unique. She said this function showcased history of this place. The millennium reflected secular fibre, which connected emotions and sentiments of the people from all walks of life of the country and abroad, she added.

Earlier, Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh announced the setting up of a ‘Government Millennium Polytechnic’ at Chamba.

The Chief Minister said that the celebrations would reinforce relations of ‘Chambiyals’ with Chamba living anywhere in the country. He said the festival was not an event of entertainment but a commemoration of long-chequered history of sacrifices and saga of the chambiyals, gaddis, gujjars and Pangwals. He said the millennium celebrations were an event of the ancient cultural heritage of this region.

Since Chamba is going to complete six decades of its being a district in the state, the Chief Minister said that various developmental schemes had been launched for uplift and poverty alleviation of this mountainous area.

A programme depicting old traditions and folklore was presented on the occasion.

Shimla, April 14
The state Wildlife Department came a step closer to the goal of saving the brown bear with the second successful breeding of the endangered animal at the Himalayan Nature Park, Kufri, near here, within two years.

Park attendants noticed the newborn only on Wednesday when it ventured out of the cave in the thickly wooded enclosure. It is for the first time that Geeta, female bear, who has been in the zoo since 1997, has given birth to a cub. Earlier, a cub was born to Chunni, the other female bear in the zoo, in February, 2004.

Both cubs have been fathered by Ramu, the lone male bear who has been in the zoo since 1985.

Dr Sushil Sood, who has been overseeing the breeding programme, said the hair on the body and the size indicated that the cub must have been born about 45 days ago.

He said the newborn opens eyes only after two weeks and do not venture out of the safety of cave till six to eight weeks.

Mr K.K. Gupta, Principal Chief Conservator (Wildlife), said the department planned to bring brown bear from Europe under exchange arrangement to avoid inbreeding.
