Tourism Dept to put medical information online
Sanjeev Singh Bariana
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 22
The Tourism Department of the Chandigarh Administration is putting online all the data regarding the medical facilities available in all hospitals in the city, including government hospitals and the PGI, for promoting medical tourism.

At least seven private hospitals, including Silver Oaks, Bedi Nursing Home, Sector 33 and Shri Dhanwantry Ayurvedic College and Dabur Dhanwantry Hospital, Sector 46, Apollo Clinic, Vivek Mohan Homoeopathy Clinic, INSCOL and Dr SU Lavasa Clinic, have responded to the communication from the administration seeking all information from their quarters to be put online. The site can be accessed on http://chandigarh.gov.in\tourism\med_r_tour.hotmail, which will be online within a week.

A senior official of the Tourism Department said the response had not been very encouraging from a majority of the private hospitals and clinics. The PGI has done a very good detailed job of the services available in plastic surgery, psychiatry, utolaryngology, radiotherapy, encrinology and neuro surgery departments, besides others. Costs of operation have also been specified. A letter was issued in January earlier this year to all hospitals and clinics in the city seeking information within a fortnight.

The Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism in an earlier communication to the department had suggested that the administration should have meetings with the hospitals and have a price structure for treatment packages in the city.

The official said the information will soon also be available at the e-sampark centres. The main idea was to flash the information on the web for easier availability of information at the national and international levels.

A senior functionary of the department said "the response has not been very encouraging from the private hospitals and clinics and majority of the communications from those who have responded have very skeletal information. The details of facilities available and charges expected have not been given".

He also said that "that instead of a sending a general circular to all, efforts need to be made on different sectors individually. A general survey of the market reveals that the city is witnessing a heavy inflow of patients needing treatment for dentist and eyes. The facilities in the city are very good and very reasonable. We will take up an exercise specifically with regard to these fields and compile the data in packages".

It was pointed out that an effort needs to be made on for formatting the available data of medical facilities and costs for developing health packages to attract tourists. "The information available, in a majority of the cases, gives costs separately for the operations, for the stay and for other facilities. We are making efforts to develop small capsules online which are complete in information with regard to total cost of a patient's visit.
