60 tonnes of uranium fuel for Tarapur
New Delhi, March 17
In a development of significant import, Russia agreed to supply 60 metric tonnes of uranium fuel for the Tarapur atomic power plant in Maharashtra and get the Kudankulam project in Tamil Nadu operational by 2007-08, coupled with strengthening cooperation in space technology.

Indian shooters steal the show
Clinch three gold, one silver in pair events

Indian shooters fired on target on the opening day of the event clinching three gold and one silver medal from the five pair events at the 18th Commonwealth Games here today.

Jaya Bachchan disqualified from
Rajya Sabha

President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam today accepted the Election Commission's recommendation to disqualify Samajwadi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan on the grounds that she was holding an office of profit as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Council.

After Jaya Bachchan’s disqualification, the BJP today said Congress chief Sonia Gandhi also attracted disqualification as Lok Sabha member by virtue of her being chairperson of the National Advisory Council on implementation of Common Minimum Programme.

Bus fare to go up in Haryana
Chandigarh, March 17
Bus fare in Haryana will go up from April 1. This was announced by the Finance Minister, Mr Birender Singh, while presenting his second Budget in the Vidhan Sabha here today. The increase in bus fare will be 5 paise per km. However, the actual increase will be more because it will also attract 63 per cent passenger tax.

Man trying to enter PM’s house held
New Delhi, March 17
The Delhi Police today detained a person who tried to intrude into the Prime Minister’s house. The person has been identified as Ashok Kumar Sharma, 24, from Rohtas district in Bihar.

4 suspected terrorists killed
Gandhinagar, March 17
Four suspected terrorists were killed by the police in an encounter during a pre-dawn raid in the Vatwa area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad today. A police constable sustained minor injuries.

Law varsity Bill passed
Chandigarh, March 17
The Punjab Assembly today passed the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab, Bill, 2006, to establish an exclusive university to impart legal education in the state. Its headquarters will be at Patiala. The estimated cost on it will be Rs 60 crore. The capital cost on the project as well as the maintenance grant will be shared by Punjab and the Union Governments on a 50-50 basis.

HC allows summoning of Kohli’s wife
New Delhi, March 17
The Delhi High Court today permitted summoning of NRI Maninderpal Singh Kohli’s wife from London by a city magistrate to depose as a witness in the extradition proceedings against him in the British school girl Hannah Foster’s rape and murder case in 2003.

ISI trying to revive terrorism in Punjab: report
New Delhi, March 17
Even as no terrorist-related incident was reported in 2005, inputs continue to be received about plans of the ISI and Pakistan-based Sikh militant leaders to create violence and revive militancy in Punjab, according to Union Home Ministry’s Annual Report 2005-06.
