Experts: teachers can mould minds

Teachers can change the mindset of students, parents and society, said Dr Rakesh Mohan, principal, of SPN College, Mukerian, while speaking on “‘Involvement of stake holders in quality education” at a two-days national seminar on strengthening of internal quality assurances cell in educational institutions at A S College for Women that concluded here today.

Dr Kanwarjit Singh, DPI (Colleges), Punjab, was the chief guest. He inaugurated the seminar yesterday. The seminar was attended by delegates from many colleges and students of the host college.

Other topics dealt with by the speakers were inculcation of healthy practices in colleges, modes of quality enhancement and sustenance, internal quality check in educational institutions and role of parent-teacher associations.

The speakers were reputed educationists and included Dr K.K. Bajaj, former Dean, HP University, Shimla, Dr A.C. Vaid, principal, GGDSD, College, Chandigarh, Dr D.R. Vij, Dr T.R. Bahia, former principal of the local A S College, and others.

Two lecturers from the host college, Dr Ramma Singla and Dr Naina Sharma, also spoke.

A question-answer session after the deliberations on both days witnessed active participation from students and delegates.

Earlier, the guests were welcomed by the college principal, Dr Rekha Bhardwaj.

DMCH graduates given degrees

Ludhiana, March 4
A former Vice-Chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Dr L.S. Chawla, today exhorted medical graduates to keep faith in their profession. In his address at the annual convocation of the DMCH here, he asked them to continuously update their knowledge as it was expanding at a fast pace.

Earlier, Dr S.C. Chopra, Dean Academics of the DMCH, delivered the welcome address. Dr Daljit Singh, Principal, DMCH, read out the college report.

Dr Brijmohan Lall Munjal, president of the DMCH managing society, congratulated the graduates and asked them to fulfil their duty with dedication and within the limits of medical ethics.

The principal gave away degrees to 40 passouts of the 2000 batch. Dr chawla presented 67 prizes and 13 medals to the students of various batches who had excelled in various subjects.

For 2000, a gold medal for the best graduate was given to Anu Singla and the silver to Aastha Takkar. The best all-rounder award was given to Gurmeen Kaur while the best intern award was given to Dr Abhishek Bajaj, Dr Daljinder Kaur and Dr Rupinder Kaur.

Among others present at the convocation were Mr Sunil Kant Munjal, Mr Dharamvir Bector, Mr Prem Kumar Gupta, Mr Satish Sanwalka, Mr Jagdish Behal, Mr H.D. Dumra, Mr N.S. Bhalla, Dr Sandeep Puri and Dr Rajoo Singh Chhina.

Parents interact with counsellor

‘A parent orientation meet’ was organised at the premises of Strawberry Kids Club here today. The meet was addressed by Ms Khanna, counsellor at Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar.

The aim of the ‘meet ‘ was to help parents find solutions to various problems while dealing with their kids. Parents were given suggestions to involve their children in co-curricular activities which would enhance the development of the child.

Shivani Arora, Shikha Lamba and Ritu Chawla of Strawberry Club said the club provided those activities which interested the kids .

Orientation programme: Parents of students for the new session of LKG of Sacred Heart Convent School attended an informative orientation programme in the new auditorium in the school premises here. Students of KG block presented a programme which included a prayer song and dance.

Sister Maria Leena, principal, accorded a very warm welcome to the parents and called upon them to think right and to act in good faith for their child.

The resource person, Father J.A. Carvalho, principal, Father Agnel School, New Delhi, and director Father Agnel School, Greater Noida, talked about education for the fullness of life, stressing that schooling was a co-operative effort of home and society.

A multimedia presentation highlighted the significance of values in life.

Students donate blood: During a health awareness camp at Ramgarhia Girls College, a series of lectures were delivered by eminent doctors. A talk on water and food- borne diseases was delivered by Rama Gupta of the DMC.

Dr Vanie Thapar spoke on various diseases relating to female health and nutritional needs while a lecture on the causes and treatment of anaemia in women was delivered by Dr Balbir. Dr Mandeep Sandhu spoke on stress and anxiety.

The second phase of the medical check-up camp was carried out on the concluding day of this health awareness week today. A blood donation camp was organised in which around 50 students donated blood. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Ranjodh Singh, president, Ramgarhia Educational Council.

National seminar held

A two-day national seminar on “Strengthening of internal quality assurance cell in educational institutions” commenced at A.S. College for Women here yesterday. Dr Kanwarjit Singh, DPI (Colleges), was the chief guest.

Dr K.K. Bajaj, former Dean, H.P. University, Shimla, spoke on “Inculcation of healthy practices in colleges to enhance quality education”. Dr T.R. Bahia, an educationist and former principal, spoke on the same theme. Dr R.K. Sharma gave his views on the quality assurance. Dr Ramna Singla and Dr Naina Sharma, college lecturers, too, gave their views.

Anaesthesia review at CMCH from tomorrow

Ludhiana, March 4
The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care at Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here is hosting an international anaesthesia review on March 6 and 7, 2006. In addition to medical professionals from the fields of anaesthesia and critical care from the entire region, more than 30 senior anaesthesiologists from Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, Rochester (USA), would be here to deliver lectures and make presentations on their respective specialities.

The conference course director, Dr Baljinder Kaur, a seniormost professor and former head of the Department of Anaesthesia, at CMCH, informed that over 300 anaesthesiologists from India and abroad had registered for the conference and participate in highly interactive scientific sessions.

She said Dr Gurinder Vasdev, assistant professor of anaesthesia and critical care at Mayo College, would be the chairman of scientific committee and course coordinator for the international meet.

According to Dr Mary Verghese, professor and head of the Department of Anaesthesia, who is also the organising secretary of the conference, the main objective of the conclave was to disseminate the recent advances and newer trends in the fields of anaesthesiology and critical care.

The 6th annual athletics meet was organised at Mata Ganga Khalsa College for Women at Mani Sahib, Kottan near Khanna, today. This year’s meet was dedicated to the memory of Gurcharan Singh Tohra, former president of the SGPC. Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, former minister, Punjab, and Mr Gubakash Singh Bija, were the chief guests on the occasion.

Results: 800m - Jaswinder Kaur 1, Gurmeet Kaur 2 and Kamaldeep Kaur 3; long jump - Daljit Kaur 1, Kamaldeep Kaur 2 and Jaswinder Kaur 3; shot put - Gurpreet Kaur 1, Amanpreet Kaur 2 and Daljeet Kaur 3; 100m - Daljeet Kaur 1, Kamaldeep Kaur 2 and Jaswinder Kaur 3; discus throw - Gurpreet Kaur 1, Amanpreet Kaur 2 and Daljeet Kaur 3; 400m - Jaswinder Kaur 1, Harpreet Kaur 2 and Daljeet Kaur 3; 200m - Daljeet Kaur 1, Jaswinder Kaur 2 and Gurmeet Kaur 3; 50m - Daljeet Kaur 1, Kamaldeep Kaur 2 and Jawinder Kaur 3.

Lodhiana Academy breeze past Muktsar

Ludhiana, March 4
In a ding dong battle, Baba Lodhiana Academy managed to breeze past Muktsar 79-71 in the first semi-final league match in the men’s section on the penultimate day of the 56th Senior Punjab Basketball Championship being played at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Muktsar team consisting of university players had an upper hand during the initial moments of the encounter and established a slender two point (22-20) lead at the end of the first quarter.

However, the tall and energetic Lodhiana Academy lads switched over to an attacking game which bore fruit. For Lodhiana Academy, Gagan was the main scorer netting 26 points while Gurbaj and Vijay contributed 15 points each. Gurpreet and Amandeep made their presence felt by chipping in with 11 and 9 points, respectively. Dilawar and Amritpal contributed 31 and 24 points, respectively for Muktsar.

In the women’s section, hosts Ludhiana beat Hoshiarpur 47-35 and then went on to outplay Ferozepore 39-19 in the round robin league matches. In another match, Hoshiarpur got the better of Muktsar 28-16.
