Vendors allege harassment by police

A number of vegetable and fruit vendors of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and New Sham Nagar, located near the Sunet level crossing, have alleged that some policemen had made their lives miserable by taking away their goods free of cost.

Shiva devotees throng temples

Lord Shiva’s devotees thronged temples on the occasion of Shivratri today. Temples of Loard Shiva were beautifully decorated. At many places, langar has served by the devotees. The Gyan Panthi Shiv Mandir established the Shiv Sutar Granth on its premises.

Farmers to hold panchayat in Delhi on March 21

Representatives bodies of farmers from northern region, including the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) will hold a massive panchayat in front of the Parliament House in Delhi on March 21 to protest against the government decision to import wheat.

Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Jails and Defence Services, Mr Malkiat Singh Birmi, has stressed upon the need to further liberalise the issuing of visas to delegations from both India and Pakistan and to set up such counters near the border so that the people did not face any kind of difficulty in visiting the other country.

Mr Suhinder Pal Singh Bawa, SP (D), Jagraon, has warned the residents of the area against the swelling number of migrant domestic labourers.

Despite the fact that there is not a single case of bird flu in Punjab, people have chickened out from eating poultry products. No form of reassurance that Punjabi chicken is free of the flu is able to convince chicken lovers. Only to send a message across the masses that there was no harm in consuming chicken, a poultry farmer invited mediapersons from all newspapers to “have loads of eggs and chicken delicacies.”

Common man betrayed by MPs: expert

The Constitution of India was a complete document and there was no scope for confrontation. It was shameful for MPs to ask for money for asking questions in Parliament. The country had been betrayed by constitutional functionaries and not by the common man.

Sikhs: NRIs

Various Sikh organisations of Canada have demanded a probe into incidents of alleged atrocities committed by certain police officials, who acted on behest of controversial person Sukhwinder Singh Sukhi, a terrorist-turned-police cat. They have threatened to knock the door of the UN in case the Indian Government failed to do what is needed.

Govt ruining education system: Gaffar
Mandi Ahmedgarh, February 26
Mr Abdul Gaffar, an SAD leader and former Education Minister of Punjab has accused the state government of tampering with the infrastructure for education. Talking to the Ludhiana Tribune, he alleged that senior functionaries of the Education Department, including the Education Minister had been issuing contradictory statements on vital issues regarding maintenance and development of primary and secondary school education.

Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, Punjab, has said the government has decided to strengthen the infrastructure in all government schools and funds worth Rs56 crore have been released under the Sarv Sikhya Abhiyan to set up additional rooms and toilet blocks in all schools.

Jobless ETT teachers’ stir from March 4

Unemployed ETT teachers held an emergency meeting at Chattar Singh Park here today. Its president Jaswinder Singh Sidhu said they planned to start a flag march in the constituencies of six Cabinet ministers from March 4.

3.5 lakh given polio drops in Ludhiana dist
Ludhiana, February 26
As many as 3.5 lakh children below 5 years were administered polio drops in the city and rural areas of the district in the third round of polio immunisation drive which got under way here today. The remaining children would be covered during the door-to-door campaign on February 27 and 28.

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) introduced the ‘articular surface replacement’ (ASR), a fourth generation hip replacement surgery, here today to relieve hip arthritis patients from pain and agony.

New glucose monitoring system for diabetics
Ludhiana, February 26
Medtronic India has announced commercial production of the Guardian RT Continuous Glucose Monitoring System in India for improved diabetes management. The system displays glucose readings every five minutes and alerts patients when glucose levels become too high or too low.

Amandeep adjudged best athlete
Doraha, February 26
The first annual athletic meet of the Doraha College of Education was organised here yesterday. Mr Tejinder Singh Dhaliwal, SDM, Payal, inaugurated the meet by unfurling the flag and releasing balloons in the air. The chief guest for the prize distribution function was Dr Narinder Singh, Principal, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha.

Punjab paddlers finish runners-up
Ludhiana, February 26
Punjab secured second position in the 13th National Master’s Table Tennis Championship held in Hyderabad recently. According to Mr Harminder Singh Chhatwal, president of the Ludhiana District Table Tennis Veteran Association and captain of the Punjab contingent, paddlers put up a brilliant performance to reach the final of this event in which around 450 players from across the country took part.
