Stall on respiratory diseases
Chandigarh, February 26 Manned by two senior doctors from the PGI, the team of volunteers of the society disseminated information to parents about various respiratory problems that children suffer from. “We chose Rose Festival to generate awareness about a lesser known respiratory problem among children called 65 Roses. This is an acronym for cystic fibrosis. This was thought to be a disease affecting mainly white people, but recently it is being increasingly found in Asians and Indians,” said Dr Meenu Singh, Additional Professor Pediatrics, PGI. “It is a disorder in which a child coughs a lot, succumbs to respiratory infections and does not gaining weight properly. Children are diagnosed after a sweat test when it shows that sweat contains an abnormally high amount of salt,” the doctor said. She said many parents wanted to know about alternative cures and treatments available for asthma. “We recommend parents to make their children do yoga exercises since it has a positive effect on them. We also ask them to take precautions by using steroid inhalers regularly to prevent an attack,” she said. Dr Madhu Sharma who is a dietician at the PGI here said, “We are also creating awareness among parents about the diet that asthmatic children should take. Since these kids are averse to physical activities fearing an attack, they tend to be overweight which worsens the problem.” |
