Humour in verse at Rose Festival
Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, February 26
The edifying spells of sardonic satire and humor by the eminent poets kept the city crowd of several thousands in rapt attention at the Hasya Kavi Sammelan held at Leisure Valley here on the second day of the ongoing Festival of Gardens.

After the ceremonial “shama” was lit by bureaucrats Amarnath and Vivek Atrey, young Dinesh Raghuvanshi took over the stage displaying his poetic and compeering skills.

The crowd kept glued to their seats till late in the evening to have a tryst with the ultimate name in humour and satire, Surender Sharma.

As expected, the humour king generated peels of laughter denouncing the rampant evils in society through couplets exquisitely perfumed with the intrinsic didactic message.

His poetic creations with uplifted sense of soul and enlarged vision on deteriorating joint family culture, moral ethics, communal harmony and national integration won standing ovation as he uttered “Lahoo baha Hindu ka, Allah sharminda rha; Marra Musalmaan toa Ram kahan jinda rha/ Bikhre bikhre hain sabhi, aao ek ghar mein rahen; kya pata tum na raho kya pata ham na rahen”.

Earlier, Sharif Bharti weaved a love story out of telephonic flashes and depicted degradation of democratic norms by revisiting the UP Vidhan Sabha, besides synthesising the psyche of different segments of society as revealed in “Beggars’ conference”.

Rakesh Soni lamented the lyrical contents of film numbers on relationships. Dr Rajender Rajan delved deep in to the impelling circumstances of a “Bar girl”.

Pardeep Choube kicked off with the favourite hit “Lallu” while Hukkah Bijnori and Yousaf Bhardwaj concentrated mainly on satirical jokes.

Local hero Khyali Saharan, winner of a slot in “top ten” in the Laughter Challenge II gave a sterling performance. In the morning session at Rose garden, noted Sarasvani maestro, Subhash Ghosh brought alive the melody of raga Gujri Todi.

Accompanied by Mehmood Khan on Tabla, he presented compositions in “madhya laya” set to Rupak, “teen taal” and “ek taal” before concluding the recital with raga ‘Basant’ on demand of the audience.
