MC decision on schools flayed

Chandigarh, February 7
The Chandigarh unit of the BJP today criticised the decision of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, and UT administration’s order to close private schools that were being run in residential area in various parts of the city by March 30.

Terming the decision as ‘dictatorial’, ‘anti-poor’, anti-student’ and ‘anti-teacher’, the party spokesperson Kehar Singh Koundel in a statement issued here today stated that it was unfair to close down schools without providing thousands alternative accommodation. They had further threatend the schools to cut off their water and electricity connections, seal their buildings if the government order was not complied with by the scheduled date.

Me Koundel said the BJP demanded that this decision be taken back forthwith. He said BJP’s former city MP Mr Satya Pal Jain had already written to Union Home Minister, Administrator of UT, Chandigarh etc. to withdraw this decision and find a permanent solution to this problem by amending the building by-laws.

Biochemistry symposium from tomorrow

Chandigarh, February 7
The Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University, is organising a two-day symposium on “Emerging Trends in Biochemistry” on February 9-10 on the PU Campus. The symposium intends to focus on the emerging trends and latest developments in the areas of Biochemistry. The symposium would cover key areas like Molecular Medicine, Nutrition in Health and Disease and Environmental Biochemistry.

The symposium will be inaugurated by Dr A.R. Kidwai, Governor of Haryana. Prof. G.P. Talwar, Director, Talwar Research Foundation, New Delhi will deliver the key note address on "Beneficial aspects of Biochemistry development of recombinant antibodies for safe therapeutics".

Prof. Anil K. Tyagi from University of Delhi South Campus, New Delhi, Prof. S.M. Hadi from Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and Dr Rakesh K. Jain from IMTECH, Chandigarh will deliver plenary lectures.

Lecture on women empowerment

Mohali, February 7
The Shivalik Institute of Education and Research here organised a lecture on women empowerment. It was delivered by Dr S.K. Bawa, Reader, Department of Education, Punjabi University, Patiala. The main emphasis was on the status of women in the past and its deteriorating status in the present.

She highlighted the fact that during the early vedic period, women were accorded a high status in society. A girl child was welcomed. She talked about the women’s status was perceived and projected in different ways by different religious sects. The lecture highlighted various reforms undertaken by the British to improve women education as well as various measures taken by the Indian Government after achieving independence.

Seminar on women empowerment

A seminar on “Impact of education on woman empowerment” was organised by the Women Studies and Development Cell of Government College.

Over 300 participants, including 40 delegates from Punjab, Himachal Pardesh Haryana and Chandigarh, attended the seminar.

The main speaker Richa Tanwar, director, Women Studies and Research Centre, Kurukshetra University, presented the keynote address. Ms Rajesh Gill, Prof Madhurima, Prof Ms Jyoti Seth, Dr O.P. Sihag and Rajni Singla participated in the deliberations.

Students participate in recitation contest

A two-day Rhyme ‘n’ Recitation Contest was organised at Saint Soldiers International Convent School, Phase VII, here.

Students of playway to Class V enthralled the audience with their recitation and singing. The contest is an annual feature in the school. Stress is laid on pronunciation, intonation and voice modulation.

Ms Sarkaria, a former Headmistress of YPS, Ms Preetinder Kaur Khurana, a teacher from YPS, Ms Manjit Kaur, Ms Neelinder Kaur, Principal, Sacred Heart, Ms Gurpal Anand from Ryan International lauded the effort made by the children.

Bar association decision

Chandigarh, February 7
Lawyers with less than five years of practice in district courts would now get an opportunity to earn money on being appointed local commissioners.

A decision in this regard was taken at the meeting of the executive body of the newly elected District Bar Association held here today. It was also decided that the name of all such lawyers would be sent to the Bench for consideration.

The body also decided that all such lawyers would be asked to give their names for being appointed as local commissioners. In different cases, lawyers can be appointed as commissioners and are paid certain fee for the job.

Besides, the body also decided to put up a suggestion register in the Bar room and library. This would enable lawyers, litigants and visitors to pen down their suggestions and grievances in the registers which would be regularly inspected by the Bar association. Several other issues were also discussed at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Mr Balbir Singh and Mr Tara Chand Gupta, were today nominated to the Executive Committee of the District Bar Association.

Other seven members of the executive body are Inderjit Bassi, Garry Rana, Dinesh K Budhwar, Dhiraj Parihar, Nitin Dubey and Mitlesh Puri.

Charges framed against SBI Chief Manager

Chandigarh, February 7
The CBI Special Court today framed charges against a former Chief Manager of SBI, Ajit Singh, and a former Deputy Manager, SBI, Mr J.P. Ranga, in a case of corruption.

The two officials were arrested by the CBI as part of a countrywide crackdown in a multi-crore scam involving misappropriation of funds by certain officials of the State Bank of India. The CBI had conducted raids at residences of two senior officials posted at the Sector 17 branch of the bank. Raids were being conducted at Chandigarh, Ambala and other cities in the country.

The officials had allegedly diverted the funds from accounts of different government departments to their personal accounts. The scam, being run since year 1999, involved amount running into several crores as more relating documents were expected to be recovered in the coming days. Following this a case was registered against the two.

Court order on Goldy

In the Burail Jail break case, a local court today directed the guarantor of one of the accused, Gurvinder Singh, alias Goldy, to produce him on the next date of hearing or pay Rs 25,000. Goldy is one of the suspects in arranging vehicles for escape of Jagtar Singh Hawara from the high security Burial jail along with three other accomplices.
