PCA contender to host ICC tourney
Mohali, February 6 Recently, ICC representative Maqbul Dudhia visited the stadium and inspected the ground facilities, gym, dressing rooms, practice area, etc, and got detailed information on facilities and seating capacity in the stadium. New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata were the venues originally identified by the ICC but all these cities have pre-existing contracts with various corporates that goes against the ICC’s sponsorship policies. Talking to Chandigarh Tribune, Mr M.P. Pandove, BCCI Joint Secretary and secretary of the PCA, said: “Though it was a preliminary visit and it was too early to say anything on it but Mr Dudhia was looking quite satisfied with the facilities available here. We have also apprised him of our commercial pact with a cement company.” Mr Pandove said: “As per contract, all boxes are sold in advance to the company for a period of three years or three matches, whichever happens earlier. This was a major hindrance because, according to the host nation agreement of the ICC, the venues chosen must be free from ground signages and other sponsorship obligations.” “There is a issue of multi-million dollar agreement between the ICC and the Global Cricket Corporation that all ICC-owned events such as the Champions Trophy and the World Cup have to be contested at ‘clean’ venues where no trace of unofficial sponsorship can be permitted. The grounds must be free of any advertisement signages so that we can maximise the revenue for our sponsors.” However, two of the three proposed venues — Mumbai and Delhi — have their own agreements with various corporates. “We hope to solve the issues as soon as possible so that we can concentrate on the preparation for the Champions Trophy.” ICC officials had also visited venues at Jaipur, New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. |

Encroachments removed
Panchkula, February 6 The issue was highlighted in the Monday issue of the Chandigarh Tribune. A team of 15 enforcement staff members led by Naib Tehsildar Bachchan Singh and Junior Engineer Karam Chand swooped down on the encroachers in the afternoon. They warned the encroachers to remove all encroachments on their own. After the latter refused to oblige, the staff
physically removed the encroachments and confiscated a number of goods of the junk dealers, including tin sheds and vehicles used for garbage collection. Amidst a heated exchange of words between the staff and encroachers, the former left, asking the junk dealers to be off by tomorrow. The Chandigarh Tribune had highlighted how this alternative road meant to de-congest traffic on the road leading into the township from Housing Board light point had been encroached upon by junk dealers and garbage collecting vehicles, rendering it almost unviable for use by commuters. |
