Faculty development programme

Ludhiana, January 31
The Punjab Commerce and Management Association (PCMA) organised a faculty development programme in collaboration with ICFAI National College here for teachers of commerce and management working in the different colleges of the city.

The programme was attended by 30 teachers. Ms S. Verma, Director, SDP College, delivered the keynote address. Speaking on the occasion, Ms Verma said the teachers should prepare themselves for facing the challenges of globalisation in the wake of private universities and campuses of foreign universities.

Key resource persons included Prof Ashwani Bhalla of SCD Government College, Ludhiana, and Dr Vijay Asdhir, principal, Desh Bhagat Institute of Management and technology, Mandi Gobindgarh.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Bhalla highlighted various challenges in commerce and management education. He said most of our educational institutions, particularly teachers, were just passing the data to students and not information. The concept of knowledge creation and knowledge dissemination was totally missing.

He emphasised on the increasing role of knowledge creation in educational institutions. Prof Rajesh of K.L.S.D. College gave teaching tips. Delivering the valedictory address, Dr Prem Kumar, principal Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management, discussed the teaching methodologies and improved ways of dissemination of knowledge.

Ms Anuradha, principal of the ICFAI National College, Ludhiana, said the ICFAI would organise more such faculty development programmes to improve the quality of teaching in the region.

Training seminar concludes

The mega event of JCI, India, LOM Officers Training Seminar (LOTS 2006) was organised here at PAU recently where newly installed LOM Officers were trained to handle various responsibilities and tasks assigned to them.

The training was conducted by past national director (training) Mukesh Pahwa, pilot faculty from Kurukshetra and Dinesh Kapila (past zone president), Rajesh Mehra (past evp) and Varinder Datta (national trainer)

About 100 delegates of 25 chapters from Ludhiana, Kurukshetra, Jind, Karnal, Delhi, Jalandhar, Phagwara and Yamuna Nagar participated in the seminar.

The “awards banquet-cum-installation ceremony” of JCI Ludhiana, Young, was also organised. Mr Kulwant Singh Sall handed over the charge of the president to Jasvir Singh Dahelay. On this occasion Mr Upinder Bir Singh, charter zone president was the chief guest. Mr Mukesh Pahwa was the guest of honor, Mr Jasminder Singh was the key note speaker, Jc Mahesh Arora was the installation officer and Jc Harpreet Singh Oberoi was the induction officer in the ceremony. Jc Kulwant Singh Sall, president 2005 was awarded the efficient Jcs for their efficient performance in the year 2005. Jc Rattandeep Singh was assigned secretary, Jc Vikrant Aggarwal – treasurer, Mr Harpreet Singh Dhanjal – chief project director, Mr Amandeep Singh – VP (management), Mr Nirbhai Singh Sall – VP (public relations), Mr Satwinder Singh Gahir – VP (growth & development), Mr Gurdeep Singh – director (management), Mr Surinder Singh Riat – director (training), Mr Deepinder Singh Matharoo – director (public relations), Mr Amitoj Singh – joint secretary and Mr Sarabjit Kaur, chairperson.

The two-day seminar was concluded on January 29. Raman Nayyar (international trainer and past evp) was the chief guest on this occasion.

Inter-college painting contest

Ludhiana, January 31
An inter-college painting competition organised by the Fine Arts Department was held at Government College for Women here today. At least 147 students from 11 colleges participated.

As many as 128 students from BA participated in categories like cartooning, rangoli, collage, composition, drawing, on-the-spot landscape painting, etc. Nineteen students from MA participated.

Mr Jaswinder Singh, sculptor, and Mr Mahinder Singh Dhami from Ramgarhia College of Education, Phagwara, were the judges. The principal of the college, Ms Prabhjot Kaur, presided over the function as chief guest. She encouraged the students to take part in such activities and congratulated the winners.

Inter-school contests

Inter-school competitions were held at Ramgarhia Girls College here today. Eminent guests present were principals of schools, including Ms Hardeep Kaur, Mr O.P. Arora, Ms Kamaljeet Kaur, Ms Prem Arora and Ms Baljinder Kaur.

Ms Harmeet Kaur, principal, Ramgarhia Girls College, Mr Ranjodh Singh and Mr Jagtar Singh, president and secretary of Ramgarhia Educational Council, welcomed the chief guest and other eminent guests.

There were various events like shabad gayan, creative writing, essay writing, poetrywriting, storywriting, poster-making, mehndi and embroidery.

PSEB XI win cricket title

Ludhiana, January 31
Riding high over the fine allround performance by Sandeep Kohli (49 runs and 2 for 30), the PSEB XI beat Sports Centre, Ludhiana, by two wickets to lift the trophy in the inaugural edition of the Shaheed Ramesh Chander Memorial Cricket Tournament organised by the Shaheed Ramesh Chander Memorial Welfare Society at Daresi ground here today. The winners pocketed a cash prize of Rs 21,000 besides a trophy while the losing finalists received a cash prize of Rs 11,000 and the runners up trophy.

PSEB XI won the toss and elected to field first. In the stipulated 30 overs, Sports Centre scored 182 runs. The main contributors were Gaurav Kumar and Lov Abhlish who scored 60 and 29 runs, respectively, while Kuldeep made 25 and Soni remained unbeaten on 23 runs.

For the PSEB XI, Harkishan Kali was the pick of bowlers capturing four wickets for 30 runs. Sandeep Kohli and Gautam Madan chipped in with two and one wicket each conceding 30 and 33 runs, respectively.

PSEB XI surpassed their opponent's total in the 29th over after losing eight wickets. Sandeep Kohli top scored with 49 runs, while other notable contributors were Lakhbir (37), Harkishan Kali (23) and Prabhjot (15). For Sports Centre, Sunny's four wickets haul went in vain. He gave away 26 runs for his four scalps while Lov Abhlish claimed two wickets for 33 runs and Harbhajan Kala took one for 23 runs.

Sandeep Kohli was named the man of the match, while Pankaj of Bhavadhas Club and Gaurav Kumar of Sports Centre, both trainees of the Regional Coaching Centre run by the Ludhiana District Cricket Association, were adjudged the best wicket keeper and the best batsman, respectively.

The dignitaries who witnessed the final include Lala Lajpat Rai, former Member, Rajya Sabha, Mr Nahar Singh Gill, Mayor, Ludhiana, Mr Malkit Singh Dakha, MLA, Mr Ranjit Singh Dhillon, Councillor, Municipal Corporation, Ms Ranjit Kaur, CMO, Ludhiana, Dr Subhash Verma, President, BJP, Ludhiana, Mr Chaman Lal Ahuja, Mr Gurkirat Singh Kotli, general secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, Mr Subhash Dawar, a sports promoter, Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association, and Mr Kashmiri Lal Jain, Chairman, Jain Sabha, Ludhiana.

Mr Kashmiri Lal Jain also handed over a cheque for Rs 21,000 to Mr Jaswant Kataria, secretary of the tournament organising society. Mr Arvind Chopra, son of the late Mr Ramesh Chander of Hind Samchar Group of Newpapers, thanked the members of the society to hold the tournament which also encouraged the youngesters to take part in sports.

JCT to take on East Bengal tomorrow

Ludhiana, January 31
JCT Mills, Phagwara, the premier soccer outfit of the region, will take on East Bengal in a home match in the first phase of the 10th National Football League to be played at Guru Nanak Stadium here on February 2.

Giving this information at a press conference here today, the Arjuna awardee and honorary secretary, Punjab Football Association, Mr Inder Singh, said that the match to be played here is expected to be a battle of nerves as currently both the teams are scrambling with each other on the points table. The Bengal outfit with nine points are placed at the fourth spot while the home side from as many outings have gathered five points and are placed at the fifth spot.

Mr Inder Singh further said that their request to the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department to expempt the state association from entertainment tax had been accepted and there would be only nominal gate fee for the spectators of the matches to be played in Ludhiana. The tickets would be available in the denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 15, while the tickets for the student's enclosure would be Rs 5 only.

Meanwhile, the Dempo Sports Club of Goa had requested the Indian Football Federation to organise their second phase home matches in Ludhiana and the final decision in this regard was expected in next couple of days, Mr Inder Singh added.

School players excel in kickboxing

Ludhiana, January 31
Students of the local Saraswati Modern School, Rajpura Road, Civil Lines, won six medals, including two gold, in the inaugural edition of the Punjab State Kickboxing Championship held at Sangrur recently. A team of 15 players from the school participated in the meet and the students bagged the runners up trophy.

Vidhu Anand of Saraswati school who clinched a gold medal was declared the best kickboxer in the sub-junior section, while the other gold medal winner from this school was Kanika Kataria. The silver medal winners included Tarun Sharma, Padam Bali and Puru Mittal while Dishu Diwan won a bronze medal.

Ms V. Verma, Deputy Headmistress of the school congratulated the boys and girls who brought fame their school.
