Militant killed; security man hurt

Srinagar, January 21
An unidentified militant was killed and a security man injured in separate encounters in Jammu and Kashmir today, where ultras set off an IED targetting a police vehicle in Anantnag district.

The militant was killed at Surigam village in Kupwara district, the scene of Wednesday’s encounter between ultras and security forces in which seven persons, including two soldiers, were injured, a police spokesman said here.

Security forces, which have launched a massive combing operation in the Lolab area, confronted the militant hiding in a house last evening. The militant was asked to surrender, but he opened fire and in the ensuing gunbattle got killed.

The house, belonging to one Abdullah Sheikh, where the militant was hiding was completely damaged during the encounter lasting several hours, he said adding the body of the deceased along with an AK rifle and some ammunition was recovered by the search parties from the debris of the house this morning.

The spokesman said a security man was injured when ultras opened fire on a security patrol at Salwah in the Mendhar area of Poonch district last night. — PTI
