Regulate drug manufacturing, doctors urge govt
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, January 11
Expressing serious concern over the ongoing controversy on Ayurvedic formulations being marketed by Baba Ram Dev, the Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has urged the government to enforce laws and strictly regulate the manufacturing of all allopathic, homoeopathic and Ayurvedic medicines. The authorities should exercise their rights of regular verifications and checks in the process of drug manufacturing from production to retail marketing.

In a statement here today, Dr L.S. Chawla, president, and Dr Arun Mitra, general secretary, of the IDPD said the market was flooded with medicines and formulations that did not have any therapeutic value and some of these were even harmful. “Every drug manufacturers, must follow the rules laid down by the Health Ministry and state governments.”

The IDPD, asking the Drug Controller of India, the Ministry of Health, as well as the Ministry of Chemical and Fertilizers to strictly enforce the norms for drug manufacturing and marketing, called for a strict vigil on unscientific and unproven drugs.

Dr Chawla and Dr Mitra made an appeal to the people not to get swayed by claims. The government should also take necessary steps to ensure that people were not misled by unscrupulous persons or unscientific claims.

They further said that no system of medicine was complete in all respect and different systems should be complementary to each other. By complementing each other, the followers of different systems would be able to do more good to the mankind and suffering humanity.
