Chandigarh, December 31
Heavy fog hit road and rail traffic in many places in the northern region today as the cold wave gave a respite to Haryana with the mercury rising appreciably but refused to loosen its hold on Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.
Fog reduced visibility considerably in Adampur (200 metres), Halwara (800 m), Ambala (800 m), Sirsawa (100 m), Sirsa (800 m), Suratgarh (500) and in Delhi (300 m), the meteorological office said.
Jet Airways and Air Deccan officials said here that they would be operating flights to Chandigarh from the Capital, which recorded a minimum of 5.5 degrees Celsius, (2 below normal).
Amritsar was colder at 3.3°C, Ludhiana 3.4 (down 3) and Patiala 4.9 while in Chandigarh, the mercury rose appreciably to 8.2 (up 1) and the city was greeted with warm sunshine.
In Haryana, the minimum at Hisar settled at 8.8 (up 4), Ambala 6.1 and Karnal 6.3.
Jammu recorded a normal low at 7.6 C but Srinagar residents continued to brave the piercing cold with the minimum reading minus 2.
Several long-distance trains were running two or five hours behind the
schedule. The foggy conditions also led to the cancellation of the two Indian Airlines flights from Chandigarh to Mumbai and New Delhi.
The Jet Airways flight to the Capital from here was delayed by an hour.
There was no let-up in the cold wave lashing Himachal Pradesh. People groaned under intense cold wave in tribal areas and mid hills.
The mercury again dropped at Shimla to 2.7 degrees from 5.2 degrees recorded
yesterday. Bhuntar in Kulu district recorded a minimum of minus 0.2 degrees while Sundernagar was cold at 1.7 degrees.
