Korean delegation visits Mohali school
Mohali, December 31
The members of the delegation have come under an educational exchange programme and will be staying here till January 8. There are nine teachers and nine students in the delegation, apart from the Principal, Mr Jeong Jong Hyo. While talking to mediapersons, Mr Hyo said education was divided into four parts in South Korea. While students spent six years in getting elementary education, three years each were spent on getting middle and high education. A student had to spend four years in the university to complete his education after which he could easily get a job. He said English was taught for 18 hours a week so that students could interact with people of other countries. Mr Balraj Singh Shergill, head of the institution here, said students from Korea would be made to stay in the houses of students here so that they could learn something about each other’s culture. Others have been made to stay at Shivalik View Hotel in Chandigarh. He said members of the delegation would be taken to various places during their stay here. He said that they wanted to know more about the routine activities going on here instead of attending special functions. They wanted to go to cremation ground to see how people from different communities cremated their dead. Mr Shergill said a 20-member delegation from the school here would be going to South Korea under the exchange programme on January 17. |
AeSI to hold contest for students
Chandigarh, December 31 The theme for the competition is to conceive and design a space colony circling Mars. Besides technical aspects of a space colony, the participants will be required to spell out their perceptions on other issues like housing, man management, robots, construction, food and agriculture, water management and radiation control. Teams from six Indian schools and a team each from Lahore and Kuala Lampur have been shortlisted for the competition. This is the first time that such an event is being organised in Chandigarh. Last year the competition was held in New Delhi and a team from India had won the global finals in Florida. Mr Dick Edwards and Ms Anita Gale, advisors to NASA, who have been conducting this competition for the past 18 years will be arriving here for the purpose and will be among the judges. The other judges include the Director, Punjab Engineering College, Dr Vijay Gupta, the Chairman, Department of Aerospace, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Prof B.S. Raghunandan, the Head, Department of Space and Rocketry, BIT Ranchi, Dr A.K. Chaterjee, and experts from the academia and industry. The competition, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Indian Air Force and Chitkara Group of Institutes, is an exercise in creativity, technical competence, management skills, environmental knowledge, planning of resources in space and teamwork. |

Chandigarh, December 31 During the second meeting of the GTU members with senior officials of the UT Administration, the members demanded immediate attention of the Education Secretary towards the promotion from the master cadre to the lecturer cadre, which has been pending for the past 15 years. |

Panchkula, December 31 While stating this here today, a spokesman of the Academy said these four new books included Dharmvir Bharti ka Sahitya, Bharat Ka Samajik-Arthik Vikas, Jhajjar Itihaas Ke Ainee Main and Chothe Sathambh Ki Chunotiyan. The revised editions brought out by the Academy included Vitt Prashashan, Haryana Aitihasikh Singhavlokan and Vitt Prashashan. He said books, namely Bhartiya Kadiyanoo Ke Paushitic Maan, Hindi Shikshan and Sahitya Ke Samaj Shastra Ki Boomika were under publication. He said other books, Haryanvi Lok Geeton Main Bhakati Bhawana by Dr. Rekha Sharma, Jhajjar Ka Safarnama by Mr. Azad Singh Chahar and Haryana Ka Riyastee Itihaas by Mr. Yashpal Guliya had also come into the market during this year. He said Mr Rakesh Vats was awarded with Sur Award, the highest state literary award. Babu Bal Mukund Gupt (Literature) Award of the year was given to Mr Madhav Kaushik, Babu Bal Mukund Gupt (Journalism) Award to Dr Keshvanand Mamgai and Pt. Lakhmi Chand Award to Mr Ramphal Chahal. |

Refresher course on computer
science
Chandigarh, December 31 The course was attended by 35 college and university lecturers of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, J and K and Chandigarh. The course aimed at providing information to the participants about recent advancements in computer science and its application in the field of bio-medical, biological and physical sciences. Experts from different fields of computer applications were invited to impart and improve necessary professional skills. Participants were exposed to a wide spectrum of issues ranging from bio-informatics, computer simulations, software engineering etc. and even to convert stress into creativity said Professor R.K. Change in duties of Judges ordered
Chandigarh, December 31 The second Division Bench also has a new face in Ms Justice Kiran Anand Lall, who replaces Mr Justice Viney Mittal. She, along with Mr Justice H.S. Bedi, will hear civil and criminal cases, while the Bench of Mr Justice S.S. Nijjar and Mr Justice S.S. Saron will deal with civil cases. The other Division Benches are Mr Justice J.S. Khehar and Mr Justice S.N. Aggarwal (Civil), Mr Justice Amar Dutt and Mr Justice Baldev Singh (Criminal), Mr Justice N.K. Sud and Mr Justice A.K. Mittal (Taxation and Civil), Mr Justice J.S. Narang and Mr Justice Ashutosh Mohunta (Civil) and Mr Justice Mehtab Singh Gill and Mr Justice Uma Nath Singh (Criminal). The Judges who will sit singly and handle civil cases are Mr Justice M.M. Kumar, Mr Justice Tapen Sen, Mr Justice Viney Mittal, Mr Justice Pritam Pal and Mr Justice S.K. Mittal. Mr Justice Hemant Gupta will deal with civil and company matters. Warrants issued in cheque-bounce case
