Thumping win for WB

Chandigarh, December 25
West Bengal registered a thumping 5-0 victory over Jharkhand in the Under-14 Soccer Festival being hosted by the Chandigarh Football Association under the technical supervision of the AIFF at Punjab Engineering College here today. Vishwajit Dutta scored all the five goals after a barren first session.

Another player to hold the spotlight today was Chandersekhar as Orissa routed Chhattisgarh 3-0.

Chandersekhar netted there goals. Both teams, however, were awarded green cards.

Uttaranchal played a one-all draw against Tamil Nadu in the third match of the day.

Gujarat were held to a one-all draw by Himachal Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh defeated Tripura 2-0.

Floodlights at Sector 42 hockey stadium by Dec 28

Chandigarh, December 25
The work of installation of floodlights at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here, has started with the erection of four poles.

All the four poles have been installed. Each pole will have 32 lamps of two kilo watt each and cater to the requirement of over 1,450 luxes — a technical word to define the brightness of light — on the ground.

Mr S.K. Sandhu, Financial Secretary, Chandigarh, along with the Chief Engineer, Mr V.K. Bhardwaj, visited the site to check the progress of the work.

Expressing satisfaction over the progress, Mr Sandhu said, “The work is being completed in minimum possible time at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore.” He hoped that the work would be completed by December 28.

Mr J.P.S. Sidhu, Joint Secretary, Sports Department, Chandigarh, also expressed happiness over the pace of the work. “It would take another one week to wind up the work as focusing of the beam of 128 lamps will be done after marking on the ground.”

It is to be noted that the lights have been installed for staging of the second edition of Premier Hockey League from January 5, 2006.

The stadium will be the first in north India and fourth hockey stadium in the country, with provision of floodlight.

Four-wkt win for Hansraj school

Panchkula, December 25
An allround performance by Yashasvy Kapil (42 runs and 3 for 12) enabled Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, Panchkula beat Panchkula Cricket Club by four wickets in St Soldier Cricket Tournament (u-12), played at St Soldier grounds, Sector 16, here today.

PCC scored 109 runs in 22 overs for the loss of nine wickets. In reply, Hansraj Public School, Sector 6, got the winning target in the 20 th over for the loss of six wickets.

Brief scores: PCC: 109 for 9 wickets in 22 overs.

Sakshi 28, Varun 21, Yashasvy 3 for 12, Dhruv 2 for 10. Hansraj: 110 for 6 wickets in 20 overs. Yashasvy 42, Ankit 2 for 13.

In the second match, fine bowling by Kulshan ( 5 for 14 in 4 overs) helped Bhavan Vidyalaya Cricket Centre beat National Public School, Sector 15, Panchkula by 8 runs.

Brief scores: Bhavan Vidyalaya: 115 all out in 22 overs. National: 107 all out in 19.4 overs. Manik 30, Gagan 24, Kulshaan 5 for 14.

Gaurav is Mr Ropar

Gaurav was chosen as Mr Ropar during the Inter-Gym and Subjunior (below-18) Bodybuilding Competition organised by the Amateur Body Building Association, Ropar, today at the Ramakant Rapid Rock Health Club, Sector-54 (Phase-2). Mr Ramakant inaugurated the function.

Results: Subjunior Mr Ropar-2005: Below 60 kg: I Gaurav; II Sukhdev Singh; III Saurav, Above 60 kg: I Manoj; II Mandeep Singh, III Aman Brar, Inter-Gym: Mr Ropar- 2005. 50-55 kg: I Gaurav, II Sanjay, III Mahavi. 55-60 kg: I Chunnu Kumar, II Ushar, III Mahavir; 60-65 kg: I Narinder, II Satinder, III Dabloo; Above 65 kg: I Sukhbir, II Anurudh, III Surinder.

Mr Balwinder Singh distributed prizes to the winners.

Tennis tourney from Dec 26

Chandigarh, December 25
The Total Tennis Academy Tennis tournament will be organised at the YMCA Total Tennis Academy’s clay court, Sector 11, Chandigarh, from December 26 to 31. According to Mr Amitabh Chandel, Chairman, Fort Foundation, the year-ending championship will be played in different age categories — boys under 10, under 14 and under 16, girls under 10 and under 16. There will be a cash reward for the championship. Entries close with Devinder Kapoor at the YMCA, Sector 11, on December 25.
