1 dies as trailer overturns: A person died while another got critically injured, when a tractor-trailer, they were traveling in overturned near Bir Behman village on Tuesday. They were taken to a hospital where the tractor driver, Mr Tota Singh, died. The police had handed over the victim’s body to his family after postmortem.

HOSHIARPUR
Poppy husk seized: In its drive against anti-social elements, the Mukerian police on a tip-off raided the tubewell of Satnam, son of Kehar Singh of Khanpur and seized one quintal poppy husk, packed in three gunny bags, on Wednesday.

59 complaints redressed: As many as 59 complaints were redressed by Deputy Commissioner Krishan Kumar at the weekly ‘Jan Sampark Divas’ organised here at Dilbagh Hall on Tuesday. He directed the officials concerned to immediately remove the grievances of the public.

PATHANKOT
Army centre inaugurated: Lt-Gen P.K. Rampal, GOC of the Rising Star Corps, on Wednesday inaugurated the new army technology centre at Pathankot. The centre will acquaint army personnel with state-of- the art equipment and other emerging technologies. It has the facilities of technical laboratory, conference hall, internet facilities, helpline and fax connectivity. The centre will run under Brig RK Nambiar, Deputy Director of the technology centre. 

SANGRUR
VB nabs auditor: A team of the Vigilance Bureau, led by Mr Raminder Singh, DSP, Sangrur, on Wednesday nabbed Satnam Singh, a auditor in the Defence Pension Disbursement Office here, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from a retired army man, Karnial Singh, a resident of Chhajla village, near Sunam, for doing his pension-related work. Mr Gurpeet Singh Bhullar, SSP, Vigilance, Patiala range, said this here on Wednesday.

Science competition held: Students of local Manohar Memorial College of Education bagged several positions in the science competition held at Haryana College of Education, Kinana (Jind) from December 19 to December 20. The college principal, Ms Mamata Chaudhary, said that Kiran from her college bagged first position, Arti and Anil secured second position while Rajesh Kumar secured the third position.

7-year RI for raping: The District and Sessions Judge, Mr Lachhman Dass Sharma, yesterday sentenced a man to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for seven years and fined him Rs 5,000 for raping his sister-in-law.

Woman strangled to death:
A 65-year-old woman was strangulated to death in her sleep by unidentified assailants who entered her dera (an isolated house) at Nagli 264 village in Bilaspur block. The murder was noticed this morning. The body of the victim, Kuldeep Kaur, was found covered under the quilt. Blood had oozed out of her mouth. Her husband, Ajmer Singh, who reportedly was drunk, was also sleeping in the same room where Kuldeep Kaur was killed. He reportedly told the police that he did not notice anything suspicious during the night.
