Several protesters, policemen injured

Dozens of agitating Haryana Government employees, protesting against their terminations and retrenchment, were today injured in a clash with the local police at Sector 17 Matka Chowk.

CAT pulls up Admn on pension benefits to UT employees
Chandigarh, December 15
The Central Administrative Tribunal has pulled up the Chandigarh Administration for not being responsive to its order regarding the payment of pension benefits on the basis of notional pay fixed on the basis of the Punjab pattern to the UT employees, who retired between January 1986 and March 1991. The Administration failed to comply with the orders despite being told twice by the tribunal to do so.

Rs 24.5 lakh, gold found in Sukhvinder’s bank locker
Mohali/Kharar, December 15
The Ropar police today recovered Rs 24.5 lakh unaccounted for cash and at least 118 tolas of gold in bank lockers of Sukhvinder Singh, the Quark engineer, who was allegedly murdered by his wife and her paramour on December 4.

Draw for 538 plots in Mansa Devi Complex
Panchkula, December 15
A large number of prospective plot owners converged at the Haryana Urban Development Authority office much before the draw for 538 plots in Sector 2 and 6 of the Mansa Devi Complex for various categories commenced at 10.30 am today.

43 packets of spurious Verka ghee seized
Chandigarh, December 15
The UT Health Department seized 43 packets of spurious Verka ghee from two stores in Burail in Sector 45 here today. Led by the local health authority, Dr Balbir Singh, the team comprising Food Inspector Jagmohan Singh and Verka officials, raided four shops this evening. The Director, Health Services, Dr IK Walia, following a tip-off, had deputed the team to carry out the surprise checks.

Government should pull out of PSUs, says US expert
Chandigarh, December 15
Prof Mohinder Parkash, USA’s renowned accounting expert, today said the Government of India needed to put its act together regarding the financial health of the various public sector undertakings.

42 challaned for violating sanitation, health bylaws
Chandigarh, December 15
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has challaned 42 persons during the last two days for violating the Sanitation and Public Health Byelaws, 1999, as part of a special campaign, which started yesterday. According to a spokesman of the MCC, the Medical Officer for Health has deployed one Chief Sanitary Inspector and four sanitary inspectors, deployed in Sector 17, to make the public aware regarding the implementation of the Sanitation and Public Health By-laws 1999.

The decision of the Punjab Government to include three villages—Peer Mashala, Kishanpura and Gazipur— within the municipal limits of Zirakpur has kicked up a storm with residents of Nabha village alleging ‘‘favouritism’’ and threatening to move the court against ‘‘illegal and unjustified’’ decision.

The Chandigarh Administration has implemented the Value Added Tax Act with immediate effect. The rates on various items which have been revised have been put on the website of the Excise and Taxation Department (www.chd.nib.in).

Studying philosophy does not just mean looking at things turned on their head. For college students taking up this subject, it could mean turning themselves on their heads, too, to understand the subject better. Panjab University is ready to introduce “practical training” for undergraduate philosophy students in its affiliated colleges, mainly to justify the jobs of philosophy teachers in colleges who have been found to be “under-loaded”.

Less than a month after it recommended the names of seven lawyers for judgeship of the High Court, the three-judge collegium of the Punjab and Haryana High Court is learnt to have sent six more names, this time of district and sessions judges, for elevation.
