IDPD team for Sri Lanka

Ludhiana, December 8
A team of four doctors led by Dr L.S. Chawla, national president, Indian Doctors for Peace and Development, is leaving for Sri Lanka on December 10 to participate in the inauguration of Sri Lanka chapter of the International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear Weapons (IPPNW) in Colombo. They will stay in Sri Lanka for three days.

Besides, teams from Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh will also participate in the function, says Dr Chawla. — OC

Jasvir Singh best athlete of Guru Nanak college

The 32nd annual athletics meet of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, about 15 km from here, was held today. Mr Gianinder Singh, District Sports Officer, Ludhiana, inaugurated the meet. Ms Bhagwant Kaur and Prof Balwant Singh Pangli, president and general secretary, respectively of the college management committee along with Mr Jagdev Singh Grewal, Principal of the college, welcomed the chief guest. Jasvir Singh, who secured three gold medals, was adjudged the best athlete.

Rural sports meet

The 19th rural sports festival in Ottalan village, will be organised by the Youth Welfare Sports Club and gram panchayat on December 9, 10 and 11, according to the president of the club Major Singh Maji (UK)

The general secretary of the club Mr. Dharminder Saddi, said here today that in the tournaments, kabaddi (52, 57, 65kg, club, village and open,) athletics (boys and girls,) horse races, dog races, volleyball (shooting) hockey, and bullock cart races would be the major attractions and cash awards of Rs 71,000 and Rs 51,000 would be given to the hockey and kabaddi winners.

Annual meet of Everest school

The annual sports day of the junior section of the Everest Public Senior Secondary School, Moti Nagar, was organised today. A large number of students took part in the fun games and it was fascinating to see the tiny tots and others vying with each other to secure positions. Mr Rajinder Sharma, president, Association of the Punjab School Education Board-affiliated schools, distributed the prizes.

Lalton Kalan sports meet from today

The three-day rural sports festival at Lalton Kalan, near here, begins on Friday. Giving this inormation, Mr Sukhdeep Singh Grewal, president, Yuvak Sewavan, said this festival was being organised in association with the Punjab Rural Sports Promotion Council.

A meeting of the association was held here today during which preparations made for the festival were reviewed. Mr Grewal said that during the closing ceremony of the festival, former international basketball star and Arjuna awardee, Sajjan Singh Cheema would be honoured for his contribution in the field of sports.

Cricket tourney from Dec 18

More than two dozen teams are expected to take part in the first edition of the Ludhiana District Open Twenty-Twenty Cricket Tournament slated to start from December 18 here at the Bharat Box Factory ground, Tajpur Road.

According to Mr Sanjeev Dhanda, press secretary, Ludhiana District Twenty-Twenty Cricket Association, the interested teams may contact Mr Des Raj, senior cricket coach, Ludhiana, at his office here at Guru Nanak Stadium by December 16. The tournament will be played on knockout basis, Mr Dhanda added.

Chess meet on Dec 17, 18

Ludhiana, December 8
The two-day Ludhiana District Chess Tournament will be held here at the Green Land Senior Secondary School, near Jalandhar byepass on December 17 and 18, according to Mr B K Sharma, acting president, Ludhiana District Chess Association.

Entries may be submitted by December 17 at 9 am with Mr Vikas Sharma or with Mr Arun Sehgal

On the basis of their performance, the Ludhiana team for the Punjab State Chess Championship will be finalised, Mr Sharma said.
