From Colleges Our Correspondent Ludhiana, December 7 The students presented a one act play “Us Noo Kahin”, a skit, histrionics and songs, solo dance, naqalan and bhangra. Dr S.M. Sharma, Principal, and Dr R.C. Sharma, Dean, CCA, along with the reception committee welcomed the chief guest and other distinguished guests. The Education Minister, Mr Harnam Dass Johar was the chief guest on the occasion. He applauded the role of Arya College in disseminating quality education and building up careers many students. He exhorted the students to attain maximum qualification as there was no end to knowledge. He honoured outstanding students of the college. Jitesh Vaid, student of B.Com.III, who has been selected in “Mission Udaan” being telecast by the National Geographic Channel in collaboration with the Indian Air Force every Sunday night at 10 pm. Only five persons have been selected from all over India to experience life in the Air Force for a month. After one month, one participant out of the five will be selected for a ride in “Sukhoi — 30 fighter jet. The Education Minister announced a reward of Rs 10,000 to the students and Rs 50,000 to the college. Other distinguished guests on the occasion were Mr Davinder Nath Sharma, Registrar, Arya Parishad, Punjab, Mr S.K. Sharma, finance secretary of Arya College Managing Committee. The stage was conducted by Dr V.B. Sudhir, Dr S.P. Singh and Prof (Mrs) Kumud Chawla. Extension lecture An extension lecture on Punjabi language, culture and literature in the modern perspective was organised at Khalsa College, Gurusar Sadhar, by the Punjabi Department. of the college. Dr Satish Kumar Verma, Head of Punjabi Department, Punjabi University, Patiala was the main speaker on the occasion. Dr Verma discussed the Punjabi language, literature and culture in an elaborative manner beginning since the times of Guru Nanak to date in a convincing way. Prof Rajdev Kaur, Head of Punjabi Department, welcomed and introduced Dr Verma to the audience. Prof Surinder Singh, Principal of the college, passed the vote of thanks. Prof Gurmeet Singh Hundal conducted the stage. Present on the occasion were Prof Bawa Singh, Prof Harcharn Kaur, Prof Harpreet, Prof Harparkash and Prof Gurmeet Singh Hundal. SCD Govt College The Physics Association of SCD Government College, Ludhiana, has been celebrating the International Year of Physics in a big way. In the series of celebrations, two extension lectures were held in the college yesterday. Dr Hargobind Singh Laltu, professor in theoretical chemical physics, Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, presented a lecture on ‘Modelling in Science from Reductionism to Holism’. This eminent scientist, a Ph.D from Princeton University, USA, and M.Sc from IIT, Kanpur, outlined various viewpoints ranging from modernism to post-modernism. It covered wide ranging topics from ‘Big-Bang’ to literature and arts. The second speaker was Prof Devinderjit Singh Chabbra from Doaba College, Jalandhar. His topic was ‘computer simulation in science’. The students were fascinated when they saw travelling waves, elastic collisions etc in a virtual laboratory . The students took keen interest as they put several questions to the lecturers. Fortytwo students of B.Sc III along with their teachers had visited the science city as part of celebrations of the International Year of Physics. Seminar Dr O.P. Sharma, former Professor of mathematics at IIT Delhi, addressed the students of B.Tech. and MBA, at Ludhiana College of Engineering and Technology at a seminar organised here yesterday The topic of the seminar was ‘Probability’. Speaking on the occasion he said the use of the word ‘probability’ in our daily life is in the form of words like chance, probable, possible and likely. It is a forecast about happening of events in the future which is always uncertain. He emphasized that though the origin of the word was is related to gambling, but because of its multiple usefulness, it had now become indispensable in most of the branches of human life i.e. statistics, economics, commerce, politics and so on. The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr S.S. Grewal. |

The Punjab State Electricity Board organised a paper reading contest in BVM School, Udham Singh Naga here yesterday. Various leading schools of the city participated in it. The topic was ‘Conservation of Electricity — Why and How? The students stressed on the need to save energy in modern age and help the country. The function was presided over by Mr K.R. Talent Fest-2005 was organised at Baba Isher Singh (N) Senior Secondary Public School, BRS Nagar, Ludhiana, here yesterday. Tiny tots of over 50 nursery, and pre-nursery schools participated in the fest. Children presented different items like action songs, solo-songs, mono-acting, dances poetry-recitation. Parents too joined in games like passing the parcel and musical chairs. Prizes were given to the three winners. The schools, whose number of participants were maximum were also given prizes. Certificates and prizes were given to all participants. The school Principal, Ms Aneeta Kundra, encouraged the participants and thanked the parents, trustees and the staff-members. Punjabi Week inaugurated Ludhiana, December 7 Mr Priyank Bharti, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, formally inaugurated the function. He shared his views with the gathering about the promotion of the language. Dr Surjit Patar, president, Punjabi Sahitya Academy while addressing the audience, said though Punjabi was the third largest spoken language in the world, it did not receive its due recognition. To achieve the recognition we must use the language at our homes as well as offices, he added. Others who attended the inaugural function were Prof Nachhatar Singh, Mr Tarlochan Singh, Dr Darshan Singh Gill, Principal of Government College, Mr Naeem Akhtar, Prof Ravinder Bhattal, Principal Prem Singh Bajaj, Mr Kulwant Jagraon, noted Punjabi lyricist Inderjit Hassanpuri, Mr Sarod Sudeep, Mr Nirmal Jaura, Ms Paramjit Kaur Nijjer along with officials of the Punjab Languages Department. |

scientist Ludhiana, December 7 The award includes memento and a citation was presented to Dr Amar Singh for his meritorious services, outstanding performance and remarkable achievements in the field of entomology at a glittering function held at Hotel Cannaught, New Delhi, last week. The former Governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam, Dr Bhisham Narain Singh and former Election Commissioner of India Mr G.V.G. Krishnamurthy presented the award at a conference held in Delhi on “Economic Growth and National Integration.” Mr Gurmeet Singh the secretary-general of IIFS, a voluntary NGO society, said the awards were given to a few of the extraordinary Indian personalities who have specialised in various fields like science and technology, education, industry, fine arts, politics and social culture in lieu of the Yeomans services rendered with excellence in their respective fields. He stressed that the IIFS was a strong advocate of economic growth and national integration. |

Five file papers for Bar association elections Ludhiana, December 7 Mr K.K. Bagai flanked with a number of supporters filed nomination papers for the president’s post. Interestingly, Mr Balwinder Kumar Goel, president of the assocation, accompanied him. In December 2003, Mr Bagai had also contested the elections for the post of president and Mr Goel had defeated him. At that time Mr Bagai was a candidate of the Harish Rai Dhanda group. But this time Mr Goel is backing Mr Bagai’s candidature. Mr Yash Pal Ghai, Mr Rajeev Duggal, Mr Vijay Gupta, Mr Balbir Singh Virk, Mr P.D. Sharma, Mr Charanjit Singh Channa were also present on the occasion. The Dhanda group has now decided to field Mr Naval Kishore Chibber as their Presidential candidate. He is most likely to file nominations paper in a day or so. Mr Rajneesh Gupta, a close associate of the sitting Bar president, filed has nomination paper for the prestigeous post of secretary. He went to the Returning Officer in a procession which started from the chamber of Mr Goel. His supporters including the association secretary, Mr Rana Harjasdeep Singh, and office-bearers of the Organisation of Young Lawyers, Mr Sandeep Kapoor, Mr Rohit Thapar and Mr Bir Inder Singh Sekhon raised slogans in his favour. Former Bar presidents, Mr K.R. Sikri, Mr Hemant Kalia, senior lawyers, Mr Harvinder Singh Mahal, Mr Ashok Kumar, Mr Yogesh Kaushish, Mr Ravdeep Singh Atwal, Mr Stevon Soni also accompanied Mr Gupta. For the post of finance secretary, Mr Vivek Sharma filed nomination papers. Mr Gagandeep Bhateja and Mr Naresh Devgan filed nomination papers for the six posts of executive members of the association. |
Construction work of lawyers chambers begins Ludhiana, December 7 Mr Balwinder Goel, President of the District Bar Association said he had fulfilled the promise that he had made to the young lawyers.
