Steep rise in wheat price
Our Correspondent

Khanna, November 24
Wheat price in Asia's biggest market, Khanna, has increased this season. The price of wheat has gone up to Rs 770 to Rs 800 per quintal as compared to the minimum support price of Rs 640 per quintal announced by the Centre for 2004 -05. Experts expect a further rise in the price in the coming months.

Mr Sohan Singh Rosha, president of the Arhtiya Association Khanna, said the price of wheat had gone up because there were no stocks of wheat with the medium category of farmers. He said only some rich farmers had stocked wheat this season. The wheat reaching the grain market was being sold at Rs 800 per quintal but the arrival was very low.

He said small flour mill owners were purchasing wheat at a higher price as the FCI had fixed the price of wheat at Rs 825 per quintal for the mills.

He said the production of wheat was less this year than last year. The production of wheat recorded last year was 10,36,073 quintals while this year the production was 10,18,022 quintals.

Automatic flour mills which were the major user of wheat were not purchasing wheat at this price because of the confusion about VAT.

Mr Varinder Kumar, a partner of a flour mill, said the government had not cleared confusion about the imposition of VAT on the wheat purchased by the mills. He said the wheat price fixed by the FCI included the tax at the rate of 4 per cent on the MSP of Rs 640.

He said if the government wanted to charge VAT, it should be charged on the increased price. He said flour millers had asked the FCI to clear its stand on the VAT issue.

He said the mills have some stocks but ultimately they had to purchase wheat from the FCI till the new crop arrived in the market. If they purchased now, they had to pay Rs 858 per quintal. He said the millers would not purchase wheat from the FCI till their stock finished.

Mr M. S. Pannu, secretary of the Market Committee, said the arrival of wheat was very low because of the paddy season but now more arrival was expected in the coming days. He said the wheat price this year had gone very high. He expected a further rise in the price as there were no more stocks with the FCI since it had cleared its stocks last year.

BKU for free trade of farm produce with Pak
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 24
The Bharti Kisan Union (BKU) has made a fervent plea for free trade of agricultural produce with Pakistan and the permission for free passage to loaded trucks in the two countries which will be of immense benefit to farmers on both sides of the border.

The BKU president, Mr Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, who along with some other functionaries of the union left for Pakistan last evening, remarked that while the government had permitted bilateral trade of some of the agricultural products, the transportation policy in this respect needed to be restructured. “At present, each export consignment has to be off-loaded at the border and then re-loaded in the trucks for inward transportation which is not only cumbersome but also adds to cost of transportation.”

The BKU delegation, comprising Mr Manjit Singh Kadian, Mr Bhupinder Singh Mahesari, Mr Puran Singh Shahkot, Master Ajmer Singh and Mr Sher Singh Muskabad, besides Mr Lakhowal, will visit Pakistan Agricultural University at Faislabad and meet representatives of farmers’ organisations after paying obeisance at Sikh places of worship in Pakistan.

The delegation would return back to Punjab on December 3.
