Experts discuss innovations in food processing

Chandigarh, November 24
A two-day national seminar on “Perspectives in microbial and food technology” got under way at the Department of Food Science, MCM DAV College, Sector 36, here today. It focused on the technical applications of microbiology to food technology.

It provided a platform for various speakers to not only discuss food safety and innovations in food processing, but also brought forward novel solutions to longstanding problems of developing countries where the use of expensive techniques is a major limiting factor.

Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest. He announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh to the college. He delivered the presidential address while the keynote address was given by Dr D.K. Sahoo, a scientist of IMTECH.

Dr J.S. Sandhu, from the CFTRI, Mysore, and Dr Kuldeep Yadav, from the SLIET, Longowal, presented papers on food and health.

Meanwhile, The Department of English organised a lecture delivered by Dr Pratibha Nagpal, a Professor of the English Department, Panjab University. Dr Nagpal has been writing avidly on both American fiction and Indian drama and poetry.

The Department of Music also organised a seminar on Panjab’s culture, heritage and folk songs. Veterans like Dr Nahar Singh, a Panjab University Professor, and Ms Harbhajan Kaur Dhillon highlighted the importance of traditional dance and its presentation on stage.

Talk-cum-workshop

The Language Forum of GGDSD College, Sector 32, organised a talk-cum-workshop on group discussion for the students of BA, BSc and BCom. Ms Ashima Dhir and Dr Sunila Sharma, senior faculty members of the college, provided the students with useful tips on the multiple facets of group discussion for admission to various B-schools.

Seminar

A two-day seminar on “Punjab in the era of economic reforms: Analysing the economic growth” got under way at DAV College, Sector 10, on Thursday. The seminar is organised by the Planning Forum, Department of Economics. The opening session of the seminar was chaired by Mr Surinder Singla, Finance Minister, Punjab. He emphasised that the economic growth was not a single dimensional issue but a multi-dimensional one.

Extension lecture

The department of Sociology, GCG-42, here organised an extension lecture on “Medical sociology and the relevance of sociology on the college premises” on Thursday. Prof Allen Furr, from Kentucki University, USA, was the key speaker. Professor Furr said the change had been taking place world over and it was also happening in the Indian society. “India has arrived in the world scene and in 100 years you will be seeing many Indian things in the world.”

National Pharmacy Week observed

Mohali, November 24
On the occasion of the National Pharmacy Week celebrations, Chandigarh College of Pharmacy (CCP), Landran, organised a series of functions. An exhibition of pharmaceutical products and machinery used in education and industry was held.

A seminar on “Future of Pharmaceutical industry in India” was also organised.

The Director of Manufacturing unit of Ranbaxy Industries, Mr R.K. Bansal attended the seminar. He emphasised the role of quality control and new advancements in this field.

Mr Bansal also inaugurated the dispensary on the premises of Chandigarh Group of Colleges.

Chandigarh Club’s notice to Gandotra

Chandigarh, November 24
The management of the Chandigarh Club today served a legal notice on a suspended member of the executive committee, Capt Sanjeev Gandotra (retd), for his reported allegations of irregularities against the committee.

Taking strong exception to the statements of Captain Gandotra in a section of the press, the counsel for the club alleged that the allegations had lowered the reputation of the club, including its president Mukesh Bassi, in public eye.

“You have made wild allegations against my client and its management. Further your statement is oral and defamatory made in a public gathering without any basis or record to substantiate. This news item was printed and published in a most irresponsible manner and you transgressed the limits of reasonable analysis, thereby defaming my client in the most-serious manner,” the counsel alleged.

The notice urged Captain Gandotra to tender an “unconditional and unqualified apology” within seven days of receiving the notice failing which legal proceedings, including civil suit for damages and criminal proceedings for defamation under Section 499 and 500, would be initiated.
