Phagwara youth alleges torture by police
Phagwara, November 22 The migrant, Krishan Kant, talking to this correspondent at the local Civil Hospital, where he was admitted by residents of the colony, alleged that he and his two cousins, Manoj Kumar (21), and Shashi Kant, a teenager, were picked up around midnight by the police. Krishna Kant alleged that they were taken to a marriage hall in the interiors of the town, where he was beaten by the cops, who asked him as to where he had kept the amount that was robbed from two private bank employees on the evening of November 16. “When I pleaded innocence, they subjected me to third-degree torture,” he alleged. “I kept pleading that I had been living in the quarters for the last seven years and had a clean record, but the cops kept torturing me,” he alleged, adding, “Manoj Kumar, my aunt’s son, was also beaten
up. However, Shashi Kant, the teenaged son of my uncle, was more or less spared,” he alleged. “When the police failed to get a confession from me, I, along with my two cousins, was let off,” he said. The enraged residents of the area alleged that since the police had failed to solve the robbery case even after one week, it was torturing innocent persons to extract a forced confession. When contacted, Kapurthala SSP, Mr Rajiv Ahir, said, “The matter has not yet come to my notice. If there is any such incident, it will be thoroughly probed.” Meanwhile, the police, still clueless in solving the robbery case, today took an eyewitness Mukesh Goel to the site near the PWD Rest House opposite the GT Road. Mr Goel had reported to the police that he had grappled with the robbers, who had eventually punched him and fled. He was taking the evening walk when the incident happened. Kapurthala SSP, SP (D) and other officials took Mr Goel to the site of the robbery and got further details about the case. The SSP also held a meeting with DSPs of Kapurthala district. |

This was disclosed at a state-level meeting of the farmers’ bodies at the Desh Bhagat Yaadgaar Hall today. Speakers at the convention said farmers in the region needed to reunite. Noted scholar, Dr Prem Singh, said the “Pagri Sambhal Jatta” Movement was the very first movement of the people, particularly farmers, of the undivided Punjab. Addressing the convention, Prof Jagmohan Singh, the nephew of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, said the cost of production for the farmers was increasing day by day because of the “faulty” policies of the government. “The farmers are suffering because of the constantly decreasing subsidies under the directions of multi-national corporations.” The professor warned that if the proposals going against the interests of the farmers were passed at the forthcoming WTO convention to be held in Hong Kong from December 13 to 18, the farmers would be ruined. |
