PAU board hears five appeals

Ludhiana, November 17
The Board of Management of Punjab Agricultural University heard five appeals filed against the decisions of the university authorities. The meeting was presided over by Mr P. K. Verma, Financial Commissioner (Development), Punjab, and the Vice-Chancellor Dr K.S. Aulakh, was not present in the meeting.

One appeal was filed by Mr S. P. Sharma, accounts officer, whose services have been terminated by the university for allegedly indulging in anti-university activities and creating indiscipline on the campus.

Another appeal was filed by Dr Prabjeet Singh, Assistant Professor in the College of Veterinary Sciences. His services have also been terminated and he had gone to the high court against the decision of the university authorities. The High Court had referred his case to the university back.

Dr H.R. Tiwari, former head, Department of Microbiology, also appeared before the board and pleaded his case. He had been punished for alleged dereliction of duty. Another appeal was filed by Mr Roop Lal, Junior Assistant, who was punished for alleged loss of medical bill and was ordered to pay Rs 25,000.

Mr R.S. Arora, administrator cum-accounts officer College of Veterinary Sciences also appeared before the board and pleaded for the restoration of the increments which had been stopped.

Mr S. P. Sharma and Mr R. S. Arora had staged fast on the campus of the PAU in protest against the alleged vindictive attitude of the authorities. Mr Arora has since tendered an apology and reinstated while the services of Mr Sharma were terminated and he had made appeal against the same.

Tiny tots take part in fancy dress show

Ludhiana, November 17
A fancy dress show was organised at Tender Foot Nursery School here today. Children dressed up as Rajasthani, Gujarati, Cindrella, Krishna, bridegroom, fisher woman, Barbie, lion, sunflower and fairy. They had fun presenting their short dialogues on the stage. Sweets were distributed among all students.

Founder’s Day celebrated

Gupta Model High School celebrated its founders' day on the school premises here on Thursday. Mr D.I. Aggarwal and Mr Satish Gupta were the chief guests. Homage was paid to the founder of the school late Surinder Gupta by the staff and students of the school.

A inter-house debate competition was held. Bhaskar, Rohini and Aryabhatt participated in it. A cultural programme presented by the students was a hit with the audience. A Saraswati prayer, songs dances and bhangra were main attractions.

An art and craft exhibition was also organised. The displayed work included soft toys, wall hangings, bags, fruit baskets etc, which were prepared by the students of Class IX and X.

Annual day

The annual day function of DAV Public School, Pakhowal Road, was held here Thursday.

Mr G.P. Chopra, a Padamshree recipient and president of DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, was the chief guest.

He formally inaugurated the school building. Ms P.P. Sharma, Principal, HMV College, Jalandhar, and manager of the school, extended a warm welcome to the chief guest and other dignitaries.

Mr R.S. Patial, Principal of the school, read out the annual report. Mr Chopra appreciated the efforts made by the Principal and the teachers in developing the school. He said DAV institutions were doing exceedingly well not only in the field of academics but also in sports.

The function started with a Saraswati prayer. The English play, “Julius Ceaser”, enacted by the students left the audience spellbound. The synchronisation exhibited in Assami, Marathi dances captivated the viewers.

The function concluded with a vote of thanks.

Seminar on retail management

Ludhiana, November 17
The Punjab Commerce and Management Association will organise a two-day national seminar on retail management at the Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology here on November 26 and 27. Keeping in view the flourishing shopping malls in Ludhiana, this activity will give a unique opportunity to researchers and retailers to discuss their problems and devise ways and means to attract customers and satisfy their needs.

Narrating the objectives of the seminar, Prof Ashwani Bhalla, joint secretary of the PCMA, said, there had been a significant change in retail trading over the years and transition was taking place from the traditional retail sector to organised retailing. The seminar on retail management will provide an opportunity to the researchers in this field to interact and discuss the problems of both retailers and manufacturers in the new era of globalisation.

Around 35 research papers have been received from researchers all over India on various topics like changing face of retailing in India, technology in retailing industry, electronic world and retailing, retail banking, foreign direct investment in retail sector and customer-related issues in retail marketing.

Dr Prem Kumar, president of the PCMA, will make a theme presentation on “Retailing — a journey from small outlet to big shopping malls”.

Students apprised of accounting software

A seminar on an accounting software, Tally 7.2, was organised at the Post Graduate Department of Commerce of SCD Government College here today. Mr Prosenjit Sen Gupta, regional manager of Delhi centre of Tally Solutions, was invited by the department to sensitise the students and teachers on training and knowledge on the Tally accounting software solutions.

Mr Gupta emphasised the growing importance of accounting software solutions. Tally is one among the few accounting software across the world that is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales and is also recognised as an in-house R and D centre by the Central Department of Science and Technology, he said.

Prof R.K. Miglani, Head of the Postgraduate Department of Commerce, said, “Tally is one of the most simple and complete business solutions available in the world. Anybody has a basic knowledge of English or an average knowledge of English can use it.”

Tiny tots display skills

Khamano, November 17
The annual prize distribution function of Sarv Hitkari Vidya Mandir School was held on the school premises. Deputy Commissioner Fatehgarh Sahib Jaspreet Talwar was the chief guest and the jot was lit by school manager Dr Devinder Dania.

The programme started with the singing of shabad ‘Guru Guru Gur Karman Mor.’ After this tiny tots displayed their skills in different items . Group dance, giddha, bhangra, and skits were the main attractions. School Principal Gian Jot Kaur read the annual report of the school and demanded the construction of road from Khamano bridge up to Manela village via school.

Captivating kathak performance

Under the aegis of SPIC Macay, Swati Sinha, a student of Rajinder Gangwani, put up an excellent kathak dance performance at Guru Nanka Khalsa College, Gujjarkhan Campus. The students were spellbound by her mobile face expressions and gumut of emotions. Swati Sinha, while dancing explained that, toda, and various hand and feet movements.

Rajinder Gangani, an accomplished kathak dancer who is the torchbearer of Jaipur school of kathak. Talking to the media he said, Language of dance is universal. Everyone can from expressions of the artists can make out the story the dancer is trying to depict on the stage.

In this context , he narrated an incident which took place in Paris three years ago. He said that after a dance performance an elderly French lady who could neither speak nor understand anything but French came to him after his performance and said,” I could make out through your dance that your God had long hair, a damru, moon and water around his head and is aggressive plus loving at the same time, which took me by surprise but my soul was pleased to watch it.”

The artiste recently performed in Germany on the celebrations of the 500 years of Indo- German cultural ties, which gave him and insight into the love of Germans for Sanskrit Language and the Indian classical music and dance.

Since it was a lecture demonstration series, students were explained about the intricacies of kathak dance by the maestro.

No letup in dengue cases

After a slight relief for a couple of days, and the drop in temperature notwithstanding, more cases of suspected dengue have been reported from different city hospitals while some others, already under treatment for dengue like symptoms, have been confirmed on the basis of serology reports.

Information gathered by Ludhiana Tribune revealed that 18 new cases of dengue had arrived at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital during the past two days, taking the total number of dengue patients to 363, whereas 16 more confirmed cases had been reported by the authorities at the Christian Medical College and Hospital where the number had gone up to 170.

At least 12 patients of dengue, including six in Bhagwan Ram Charitable Hospital, had been admitted to other hospitals from different city localities during the past 48 hours.

Despite claims of the health authorities that the situation was not as grim as was being thought, particularly in comparison to 2003, the total number of suspected and confirmed dengue patients, both from the city and those referred to different hospitals here from other places, had already crossed 500.

However, the health authorities maintained that so far only 187 confirmed cases of dengue had been reported.

Dr Rajinder Kaur, Civil Surgeon, while talking to Ludhiana Tribune here today claimed that radical treatment against dengue had been given to all confirmed cases reported to the department.

Teams of health officials were also looking into the anti-mosquito spray and fumigation being conducted by the Municipal Corporation in different city localities as per the schedule submitted by the MC to the district authorities, she added.

Meanwhile, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, D.S. Guru, who was in the city yesterday to inaugurate a dental camp at the Civil Hospital, asserted that the outbreak of dengue in the city and elsewhere in the state could not be termed as epidemic.

Moreover, the number of confirmed cases (187) in the city were much less as compared to the past two years.

He said the Health Department was taking necessary steps like providing radical treatment to all family members of the patients, arranging focal sprays in the areas from where dengue cases were reported and preparing blood slides of residents in vulnerable areas.

He further said instruction had been issued for immediate repair and servicing of the blood component separation machine, considered vital for treatment of dengue, which was lying defunct in the local Civil Hospital for the past several months.

Over 100 examined

A team of doctors led by Dr Vineet Gulati examined more than 100 patients at a free vertigo and deafness assessment camp, organised at Gulati ENT and Allergy Hospital in Model Town to mark National Day for the Deaf here today.

According to Dr Gulati, patients and other people at the camp were apprised of the hearing problems, vertigo and deafness assessment. Free hearing test (audiometry) were performed by Ms Ruchi Goel, audiologist
