Self-examination can detect cancer: expert
Chandigarh, November 7 Also present on the occasion were renowned kathak dancer Shobha Koser and Renu Sehgal, Chief Architect of Chandigarh, both being cancer survivors. They shared their experiences with the audience about the ways to cope up with the disease and advised the people to face the problem with courage. A lecture on cancer awareness and early detection was delivered by Dr FD Patel, Professor in the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology. Dr Patel described various pre-disposing conditions leading to cancer and informed that more than 50 per cent cancers are related to lifestyle like tobacco smoking and chewing and unhealthy diet. She added that cancer of cervix, is a result of poor hygiene and infection. According to Dr Patel simple measures like breast self examination, inspection of the mouth and the cervix can help in early diagnosis of the disease. Also present was Dr SC Sharma, Professor and Head, Department of Radiotherapy, who informed that at present cancer is the sixth most common cause of human mortality. Nearly seven to eight lakh cases are diagnosed every year, she added. |
Over 1,000 delegates for orthodontic congress
Chandigarh, November 7 The congress also promises three pre-conference courses on November 10, a post-conference course on November 14 and a student scientific programme on November 10. A trade display with more than 60 trade booths will feature the latest comprehensive display of orthodontic material and equipment during the conference. Addressing a press conference today, Dr H.S. Chawla, Professor and Head, said orthodontics was a specialised branch in dentistry that provided maximum aesthetic value, as a result of which more cleanliness and longevity of the denture could be assured. Dr Ashok Utreja, president, World Edgewise Congress, said the PGI orthodontic setup besides providing routine orthodontic care also concentrated on interdisciplinary care of cleft lip and palate-related problems, dentofacial deformities and other related problems. More than 1,000 delegates from all parts of the country and 60 delegates from countries, including the USA, the UK, Australia, France, Turkey, Italy, South Korea, Oman, Palestine, Malaysia, Pakistan and Nepal, will take part in the conference. The scientific programme will include the IOS Oration and Vasavi Memorial Lecture, invited scientific lectures by a galaxy of 20 international and 13 national speakers, 190 delegate scientific papers from noted specialists and postgraduate students from India and abroad and 130 scientific posters. Also, the Indian Board of Orthodontics will conduct an examination on November 9, which will be taken by 50 applicants at PGIMER. Talking about the new techniques, Dr Chawla said various habit breaking appliance and fixed appliance therapies were becoming popular. He said 40 per cent of people suffered from minor to severe orthodontic problems. |

Chandigarh, November 7 Both the goals were scored in the second half of the play. Chandigarh Football Academy’s Randeep Singh dispatched the ball into the goalpost during the 45th minute of the play. Jaspreet Singh of Khalsa Academy headed the ball in after a corner shot in the 52nd minute and equalised the score. Now, the CFA-42 will face St. Stephen’s Academy, Sector 45 in the final of the tournament at 2.30 pm tomorrow. |

Sodomy case: Cop’s dismissal recommended
Panchkula, November 7 Senior police officers said that the local police had written to the IG, Ambala Range, giving them details of the attempt to sodomise the boy, and that the cop was evading arrest. The police has already dispatched three teams to nab him. The accused cop had earlier also been charged with sodomy in two cases, one at Panchkula and another at Kaithal. The police had recently received information that Bijender Singh was hiding in Kaithal in the guise of a ‘madari’, and was carrying a monkey with him. However, when the police party went to nab him, he fled away. A police team is still keeping a watch on his house in Kaithal. Bijender Singh had tried to sodomise a boy, by calling him to his room on the pretext of giving him tea. Some other youth, who heard the victims cries for help, had forcibly barged in his room, and rescued the boy. |
Vigilance Awareness Week begins
Chandigarh, November 7 Employees of the State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank (PNB), Northern Zone, have pledged to strive continuously to bring about integrity and transparency in all spehers of activities and to work unstintingly for eradication in all spheres of life. The pledge was administered by the General Manager, Mr R. Nagarajan, of the State Bank of India and by Mr B.P Chopra, General Manager, PNB (Northern Zone) to members of their staff in their respective offices today. Mr Nagarajan said emphasis would be laid on organising customer-oriented programmes during this week. Various offices and branches of the bank would conduct customer education programmes at important centres like Ambala, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Chopra said corruption did not just mean being unfair and dishonest in financial matters but inefficiency and delay of work was also corruption. The Principal General Manager (Telecom) administered oath to employees, who pledged to work for eradication of corruption in all spheres of life. |
