Sex racket busted in Gurgaon, nine women held
Gurgaon, October 10 According to Mr Kuldeep Singh, in-charge of a police chowki in the DLF, as many as 54 women were arrested during the last one-month. The nine women arrested were allegedly indulging in “obscene gestures to lure customers”. They were arrested on the Delhi-Jaipur highway near Ambience Apartments, close to a liquor vend. Most of the women arrested are said to be from Premnagar area falling under Nazafgarh police station area in Delhi. Although there were scattered reports of sex workers being active in DLF area in the past, their presence has been strongly felt in the past few months. They are active in the DLF area, especially on the highway and near the liquor vend, said the police. According to a police official, they hang around the liquor vend, where they easily entice customers. Besides, they also ask for lift from unsuspecting commuters and “blackmail” them to part with cash and goods. They particularly target “inebriated or decent commuters” heading towards DLF, said the police. The gravity of the situation came to light when a resident of Chakarpur alleged that he had been “mugged by two females”. He said they had tried to snatch his laptop, cell phone and his purse containing Rs 24,000. According to the police, these women come from Delhi in cars and alight at unpredictable spots on or around the Delhi-Jaipur highway. Perhaps a gang is behind the racket, the police said. |
Govt to implement rules for quake-proof structures
New Delhi, October 10 “Though no alterations can be made in the existing structures, we will ensure that buildings coming up in the capital strictly comply with guidelines laid down for construction of quake-proof structures,” Chief Minister Ms Sheila Dikshit told reporters here. She was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar entitled ‘Delhi’s Infrastructure Development: Gearing up for 2020’, organised by a Hindi daily. Speaking at the seminar, Ms Dikshit said “archaic laws” which create a hindrance to urban infrastructure development should be replaced by new legislations, if Delhi is to be developed as a world-class city. “There are many laws like the Land Ceiling Act, the Lal Dora Act etc which were framed way back in the late nineteenth century but are still operational. We should have a thorough revamp of such archaic laws which act as a hindrance to the capital’s development as a world-class city,” Ms Dikshit said. Dikshit said “multiplicity of authority” in Delhi was also causing major roadblocks to infrastructure development. “For the implementation of a project in the national Capital, the state government has to take permission from a number of authorities. This, in turn, creates a lot of delay in its completion,” Ms Dikshit said. |
Court pulls up police for failure to arrest wife-killer
New Delhi, October 10 Terming the report filed by Investigating Officer (IO) Kishan Lal as “casual”, Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) B R Kedia said he was not at all satisfied by the efforts of the police in nabbing accused Narender Giri. Earlier, the court had on July 23 made it clear that if the police did not arrest the accused, the IO will have to file a detailed report on the efforts undertaken by him explaining the reasons for the failure to nab the offender. The court, however, gave him another opportunity to arrest accused Giri. “It is made clear to the IO that mere recording his statement and consigning the file to the record room on the ground that accused has been declared ‘Proclaimed Offender’ was not going to serve any purpose as the accused was involved in a
heinous offence of murdering his wife and son,” the ASJ observed. As per Prosecution,
Giri killed his wife Baby and five- year-old son Rakesh by pouring a container full of acid
on them following a heated argument with his better half on some family matter in New Usmanpur area of East Delhi. The mother-son duo succumbed to burn injuries in a city hospital. Police had chargesheeted Narender under Section 302 of IPC (murder) on October 16 last year. |
Residents agitated over prolonged power cuts
Greater Noida, October 10 Apart from the daily routine, farming, commercial and industrial activities have been adversely affected by the unscheduled and prolonged power cuts. A housewife, Ms. Ranjana Singh of Alfa Sector, said that even the water supply has been adversely affected in the residential areas due to the prolonged power cuts. This in turn has affected the domestic chores, she said. Tripping and under frequency have resulted in fluctuations in voltage, endangering the electrical and electronic gadgets. Even as relaxing indoors has become a problem due to the prolonged power cuts, mosquitoes, flies and other insects have made the residents’ life miserable, said Neeraj Tyagi, a resident of Sector-37. The residents alleged that the newly- installed computerised ‘Service Centre’ of the UPPC in Noida is of little help to them. The NPCL officials have not only failed to maintain adequate power supply but have been unable to inform the residents about the power cuts in the area. Under frequency is blamed for the power cuts by the Noida Power Company
Ltd (NPCL). |

Education for all: Task force set up
New Delhi, October 10 The convenor of the RTETF, advocate Ashok Agarwal, said “the RTETF has two objectives: to see every child in a full-time formal school and a complete ban on child labour in all its forms”. The task force will receive complaints about any violation of the right to education. “We want to provide a platform to people to register their grievances and be heard. Through the RTETF they can bring to notice problems such as absence of school in their area of residence, absence of basic physical and academic infrastructure in the school, denial of admission by a school, absence of quality education, overcrowded classrooms and denial of basic facilities to the students,” pointed out Mr Agarwal. Urging the civil society to join the task force team, Mrv Agarwal said aggrieved parents could visit, call or write in their complaints to the task force, which began here today, at 478-479, Lawyers Chambers, Western Wing, Tis Hazari Courts, between 9 am and 5 pm on all days except Sundays and holidays. “There are helpline numbers 23910014 and 20600384, which people can call to register their complaints,” Mr Agarwal said. |
