It’s hard to miss them in the crowd. Wearing enthusiasm on their sleeves, they go about the venue of the 36th National Kendriya Vidyalaya Sports Meet spilling smiles and inspiring spirits.

Who can explain the excitement of Shahina Akhtar, who has travelled all the way from Jammu with the message of affection? Unflustered, she prepares for her game as well as “rozas”.

When asked if it would be easy to have fasts during competition, she beams, “Game is a matter of pleasure; roza is a matter of faith. Both compliment and facilitate each other. I am sure in this ceremonious season of roza, my game will only get better. I am ready to hit the floor and take on every challenger in tae kwon do.”

The authorities, at the meet, are taking special care for Akhtar, as Ms Ranjana Bassi, Principal, KV, 3 BRD, AF Station, says, “We will make special eating arrangements for her. She will feel at home.”

Giving Akhtar a warm company was Aditi Dubey, a seven- year- old differently-abled girl from Delhi, Though hard of hearing, she was in no way hard of spirit.

In her father’s, Anand Dubey, presence, his only daughter, Aditi, listed all her strengths, adding that, “Sport meets like these offer a lifetime chance to improve one’s skills. These are so interactive, so positive that there is no way you can miss them. I did not bag any position, I am happy that I have come.” Aditi did not win but because she was the youngest participant in her event, she was declared the fourth winner, said Ms Bassi.

K Deepika 12-year-old Aditis challenger from Hyderabad, brought laurels. Bagging the first position under-14 skating, she soared high and made no attempts to hide her joy. “Last year, I managed to get a silver, but this year I was determined to bag a gold. All my competitors were adorable in that and they cheered me for my game. Happy for the while, Deepika has higher goals. “I will settle for nothing less than an Olympic gold for India,” she struts.

Eleven-year- old Palak Sharma’s attitude made a better mark than her game. The Bhopal girl lost at the meet, she was a winner in general. “I made many friends, laughed a lot and shared loads of experiences. What if I did not get a position? I have got a lot of friends. I can go back home happy that I made good use of my time at the meet. Also, I was handling an important job all through - that is of cheering those who won!”
