YPS students stage play

As many as 107 Yadvindrians took the stage at the Tagore Theatre today in elegant costumes to bare the mystery of ‘The Tinder Box’, a play by Hans Christian Anderson.

The play is a salutation to abundant love, Hans had for the children level.

The presence of a multitude of artistes on the stage veritably induced reality in certain sequences like the crowd in the forest and the market. The children had carefully assimilated and imbibed the characters they portrayed on the stage. The theme of the play, otherwise, had been embalmed with a deep philosophical content as the virtues and values symbolised through the play were bared as it moved on.

Protagonist Tom, in a bid to secure the tinder box, his lady love, the princess, the witch struggling to control the box and related sequences, kept the audience glued to their seats. Impact of young director Zubin Mehta was perceptible in every spell. The music renditions, all alive , led by Kwi Suk Kang , K Chettri and choir augmented the performance.

Anvit as soldier Tom, Praneeta as Witch, Angad as King, Simran as Queen, Samridhi as princess excelled besides Jhujhar, Raghav, Bhagyaraj and others.

The Principal, Dr H.S. Dhillon, honoured the budding artists. — OC

Students' laptop fun leaves PEC officials pesky
Amrita Dhaliwal
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 5
The 'misuse' of laptops by the first-year students of the Panjab Engineering College (deemed university) has irked the college authorities with students using the internet on their laptops more for downloading games, sites and chatting than using it for study.

The authorities are now planning to take corrective measures and block these sites, as most of the 2 MB bandwidth, which PEC has bought, is being exhausted by these.

The university is planning to appoint net administrators who would not only block such sites but would also help monitor their bandwidth and manage traffic on it.

"We have advertised for 3 net administrators for the same," informed Prof Vijay Gupta, Director, PEC.

Laptops were introduced in PEC as part of an overall curriculum- change and was thus compulsory for the first-year students.

The course-content was changed and made more computer-friendly, where in students ought to submit reports, make projects and study certain technical subjects like engineering drawing, graphics, etc on PEC website.

Certain areas in PEC have also been made wifi-enabled to help students access the internet and PEC website, where students can have their own log-in, see their grades, etc. Students can also access lectures delivered through the website.

Students are, however, using the internet facility to chat and download sites.

"We do chat and also play games," acknowledges Pulak, a first-year student.

Students argue that they don't have a choice as there is not much teaching going on the laptop.

"We have only one class in the week which requires us to use the laptop, so what do we do in the spare time," clarifies Pooja Aggarwal also a student of first year.

But authorities are in a different mood. Prof Vijay Gupta says students should use the internet but not to chat and play games.

"Our intention is for students to be more net-friendly and to learn new things, we would like them to surf the internet but not for chatting and downloading sites."

One of the biggest problems the college is now facing is the shortage of bandwidth.

"It is expensive to purchase bandwidth, which costs around Rs 5 lakhs or more, and we would need time for that," say the authorities.

"Authorities hope that till the time they can purchase more bandwidth, blockage of certain sites would help reduce the load on it.

Around 700 PEC students have a laptop of which about 370 students are from the first-year itself.

Blending verve with fashion

Chandigarh, October 5
A lifestyle event to throw the city's fashionable divas into tizzy! After a grand fire-up in Kolkata, the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour made its celebrated entry into Chandigarh with two showings each scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Tarun Tahilani's collection showing tonight has been inspired from Kilim Carpets (flat-weave carpets from the Middle East) and from which the major prints have been derived. Rust, black and colourful Indian drapes constitute the collection, which has been designed primarily for the Fall season.

The event brings together over 40 top models like Jesse Randhawa, Monikangana Dutta, Carol Gracias, Joey Mathews amongst others to the various shows traversing seven cities across the country. Even the technicians are the best in their fields like Choreographer Alison Kanuga, hair and makeup specialists Ambika Pillai, Mehra Kohla and Vipul Bhagat, Set Stylist and designer Sumant Jaikrishnan, Light Engineer Viraf Pocha and Sound Engineer Castello D Costa.

The fourth edition of the fashion tour (which began in 2003) — an amalgamation of sheer verve, energy, vitality and daunting coordination — brings together designers Tarun Tahilani, Rocky S, Wendell Rodricks and Anamika Khanna with each designer showcasing their fall-winter collection for the year.

In the hustle-bustle of the pre-event jitters, the last-minute set hammerings, the piquant tweaking of the lights and the setting of audio levels of pulsating music to accompany the sashaying of models stood designer Rocky S whose work shows tonight and who carried his charm in a casual, chic way.

With Tarun Tahilani out of action (viral fever has kept him at home and he will not be in Chandigarh for his show tonight), all attention was tuned to Rocky's words of wisdom. "I work everyday of my life without breaks. After 13 years I still feel as passionately for what I do and believe I have only just begun!"

His line today, which debuted at the Milan Fashion Week from where he has just come back, is called, 'Rebirth of Kama Sutra Girls.'

"It is a collection for sensual, confident, sassy girls of today who know what they want," says Rocky. It is a prêt line, affordable and wearable, in pastels with hints of white.

As for the Punjab, what he sees here is, "bright colours, traditional along with conservatism coupled with young people who have a mind of their own."

With designing clothes for 20 to 25 films every year, opening stores for his prêt line (at last count 12 outlets stocking his stuff!) and designing prêt for mainstream fashion, Rocky certainly has his hands full.

So what inspires him? "It could really be anything for example, a black and white picture of a face, which I thought looked angelic, inspired me tremendously at last count."

A graduate from the JD Institute of Fashion in Mumbai, Rocky's break came when he designed clothes for Bollywood actor Manisha Koirala and by mid-1995 there was no looking back.

He is now the most sought after designer for a host of Bollywood stars like Hrithik Roshan, John Abraham, Bipasha Basu, Esha Deol, Vivek Oberoi, Salman Khan to name just a few!

Not one to restrict his repertoire, he has even designed wedding trousseaus, almost 50 in two years. "People in the North have money and they are very fashion conscious, that makes for a neat combination. We have changed the trend people now look at the clothes in films for inspiration. They want to be associated with Bollywood. The merging of young designers with young actors have been most beneficial."
