MLA ‘shields’ sarpanch over village funds

Irked farmers block traffic
Khanna, September 30
Despite the tall claims of Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh on September 26 during the inauguration of paddy procurement at the Khanna grain market that paddy would be purchased on the same day and the payments would be done within 24 hours, farmers are being forced to wait for days to sell their crops at Khanna and other areas.

The much publicised drive against quackery in the city and elsewhere in the district seems to have come to a naught after about 12 clinics of unqualified medical practitioners were raided and sealed in Prem Nagar locality where three children had lost their lives due to wrong medication over a week ago.

Woman alleges molestation, 2 booked
Ludhiana, September 30
The Sahnewal police has booked a resident of Lakhowal village and an other person for allegedly molesting a woman of Sahnewal on the evening of September 24. The woman who works as a mid-wife in a hospital in Machhiwara was returning home when the incident took place.

2 denied bail in cheating case

The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Satvinder Singh, has dismissed the anticipatory bail applications filed by Bhushan Kumar Ghai and his son Sudhir Kumar of Madopuri in a case of alleged cheating.

Pending subsidies to SSIs ‘to be cleared’
Ludhiana, September 30
A provision for Rs 100 crore has been created by the Punjab Government with a view to clearing the backlog of pending subsidies to the small-scale industry. Besides, the government plans to strengthen and repair all roads in the state by March 2006. This was stated by Mr Surinder Singla, Finance Minister, Punjab, at a function organised by the United Cycles and Parts Manufacturers Association here today.

Workshop on capacity building of NGOs

Dr H.S. Deol, Commissioner, Linguistic Minorities in India, interacted with the participants on the second day of the workshop organised by the Society for Service to Voluntary Agencies (North), SOSVA (N), Punjab. The workshop had been organised for capacity building of NGOs at Bachat Bhavan, DC Complex, Mini Secretariat, Ludhiana.

Book released
Ludhiana, September 30
“Kuka Lehar”, an account of the freedom struggle between 1857 and 1947, written by the Secretary of Namdhari Darbar, Sant Dalip Singh, was released at the Punjabi Bhavan here today.

Army parachuter cremated
Khatra (Ahmedgarh), September 30
A parachuter of the Army, was cremated at the local crematorium situated here today. Even after three days after his death, no official from the civil authorities or the Sainik Welfare authorities attended his funeral. Naik Gurmeet Singh had fallen from a running train near the Kanpur railway station on September 28. He is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter.

Volunteers leave camp on a positive note

Around 200 volunteers from 15 states across the country who attended a 10-day National Integration Camp at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women left for their homes today on a positive note.

The valedictory function of the 10-day national integration camp was held at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women here today. More than 200 volunteers representing 15 states from all over the country were given a warm send-off by the college management.

Wrestling mania grips city
Ludhiana, September 30
The Total Nonstop Action (TNA) wrestlers Sonjay Dutt, Simon Diamonds and Shark Boy, after performing in Mumbai, Vadodara, Lucknow, Bhopal and Nagpur, were in the city today on a promotional tour organised by the ESPN Star Sports channel. Giving details of this high-decibel campaign, based on the theme of “International Taandav, Desi Andaaz” to promote TNA wrestling in India, Mr Sameer Bajaj, a spokesperson of the ESPN Star Sports, said the channel had launched an extensive campaign to let Indian fans see, experience and interact with their favourite wrestling stars.

The Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate, Ludhiana, today banned combine harvesting operations during night in the district in view of the high moisture content of the grains at that time.
