NSS camp begins at Ramgarhia Girls College

Ludhiana, September 24
A 10-day NSS camp was inaugurated at Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj, here today by Ms Usha Sharma, Special Secretary to Government of Punjab.

The distinguished guest was accorded warm welcome by Principal Harmit Kaur along with members of the management and the staff. The function started with the invocation of goddess Saraswati by students from the Department of Music.

The teacher in charge of the NSS unit of the college, Ms Jaslin Brar, Ms Jasbir Punni and Ms Rajeshwarpal Kaur, said the motto of the camp was “Youth be Swastha”. During the camp, the volunteers will also be enlightened on various social issues like national integration, female foeticide and dowry.

The volunteers will also undertake the task of spreading awareness and education among the children of nearby slums.

Ms Sharma said participation in such extracurricular activities went a long way in developing balanced personality of an individual. Such activities developed the qualities of team spirit, strong will power and leadership among the students that contributed in shaping good citizens. The function ended with the vote of thanks by Mr Ranjodh Singh, President of the Ramgarhia Educational Council.

Camp begins

The campus of Master Tara Singh Memorial College here witnessed a splash of colours with the advent of more than 200 volunteers from 15 states, including Punjab, Haryana, Pondicherry, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Assam, Meghalaya Maharashtra, and Chandigarh, for a national integration camp.

The seven-day camp is being organised in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

Dr Madanjit Kaur Sahota, Principal, said all volunteers would be provided a platform to exchange their views and share their experiences. A pot-making competition was the main attraction today.

The Principal extended a hearty welcome to the volunteers and hoped that with the collaborative efforts of all concerned, the event would be a success.

Camp director Indermohan, camp commandant Monica and deputy commandant Gurvinder apprised the students about the importance of national integration. They also acquainted the volunteers with various activities proposed to be undertaken during the camp.

Mr Swaran Singh, president of the managing committee, congratulated the Principal for hosting the event and for providing an enviable platform to the youngsters to come up with their suggestions and formulate guidelines to usher in a better, brighter and prosperous tomorrow.

Lecture

A lecture on “Stress management and micro-teaching” was organised at the DD Jain College of Education here recently.

Mr S.C. Garkhar from the Department of Education, Panjab University, was the key speaker on the occasion.

In his lecture, he laid emphasis on stress management and elaborated on factors causing stress. He said parents and teachers should avoid putting undue pressure on children.

Superstitions and jealousy could be other factors responsible for stress, he said. “But it can be managed if one sees life in an optimistic manner. Meditation could help a lot in managing stress,” said Mr Garkhar.

He said micro-teaching had great importance in BEd colleges. The technical or the practical training could clear many doubts, he added.

Talent hunt

Talent Hunt-2005, organised for the students of the GMT College of Education, concluded here on Saturday.

Students took part in a variety of activities including folk songs, dances, giddha, geet ghazal, suhaag, sithniyan etc.

Mr Kashmir Singh Thind, chairman of the GMT College of Education, presided over the function.

Dr H.S.Sidhu, Principal of the college, appreciated the hidden talent of more than 40 students.

Inter-house talent search contest at KVM

An inter-house talent search contest was organised here today at KVM School by the senior humanities forum in the school auditorium. Participants from seven houses enthusiastically presented a variety of items like solo songs, classical dances, Western dance, duet-song ,mono acting and instrumental music presentation.

The Principal, Mr S.C. Saxena, chief guest of the function, appreciated the performance of the students. The judges were Ms Namita Raj Singh, Ms Sushma Mehan and Ms Meenakshi Khera.

The results of the function are:

Science workshop

A one-day science workshop was organised for teachers of over 15 schools of city, teaching Classes I to VIII in Kundan Vidya Mandir, Civil Lines, Ludhiana, under the guidance of Mr S.C. Saxena, Principal here on Saturday. The principal and in charge of the middle section Mr J.P. Sharda, welcomed the resource person, Dr Avtar Singh, Professor and Head of Department of Educational Measurement, Surveys and Data Processing; NCERT, New Delhi.

The workshop was sponsored by Frank Brothers & Co. (publishers) Ltd. New Delhi. Dr Avtar Singh spoke on science education, development of science text books and curriculum development. Latest teaching methodology was also highlighted in the workshop. Reforms in education policy were also discussed.

Students, writers honoured

Ludhiana, September 24
Over 350 school students from the district were honoured today by the Shaheed Memorial Sewa Society for getting first positions in national integration competitions. The function was held at Ramgarhia Girls College. Ms Usha Sharma, Special Secretary to Government of Punjab, was the chief guest while renowned writer Om Prakash Gasson was the guest of honour.

Mr Varinder Singh, secretary general, Punjab State Awardee for Social Services, said 21 eminent writers/poets were awarded.

Lok Adalat held at Samrala

Ludhiana, September 24
The Samrala Subdivisional Legal Services Committee held a Lok Adalat at Samrala under the supervision of the Chairperson, Ms Navjot Kaur Sohal, Civil Judge (Junior Division), today. As many as 33 cases for Rs 23 lakh were settled through amicable settlements.

Giving this information, Mr Arvind Markan, Assistant District Attorney, Legal Services Authority, said members of the Samrala Bar Association and social workers of the area played a key role in resolving these disputes.
