Nuts for knotty hearts
Chandigarh, September 24 A joint campaign of the California Pistachio Commission (CPC) and Apollo Clinic, a free on-the-spot heart check up is being organised in Chandigarh on Sunday to commemorate the World Heart Day. Not to forget, the pistachio power comes along with the women power as the check-up camp is meant exclusively for women. Proudly supporting the ‘The Heart Truth’, national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, the commission this time is not just looking at its usual elite, high-income and urban consumers but women from all strata of society all of whom may benefit from the camp. Optimistic about the sales figure to rise in the next season which have been just a few hundred tones so far, Keith Sunderlal, the Indian representative of the CPC appeared all informed about the nutritional share of the Californian nut if not about its market share. Emphasising on pistachio as a great healthy snacking option, Keith Sunderlal informed that CPC will promote heart-healthy diet not just through Apollo Clinic but also through retailers across the country. Meanwhile the Californian pistachio is available at a very few select outlet in the country and its pricing is also not known by many including Keith. The heart-health awareness camp at present is being organised only at Gurgaon and Chandigarh. In Chandigarh, the camp will be on at the Apollo Clinic, Sector 9 and physicians from the Apollo Clinic will be present to advise women about their being at a heart risk by conducting a general heart check-up and afree ECG if required. |
Puneet adjudged best athlete
Chandigarh, September 24 Twinkle of Lawrance Public School, Mohali, threw the spear to a distance of 17.46 metres to win gold in the javelin throw event. Purnima of DPS, Shimla, and local thrower Ankita of Carmel Convent, Sector 9, got silver and bronze with a throw of 16.75 and 16.45 metres, respectively. BBMB win kabaddi title
Chandigarh, September 24 In the final BBMB downed Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) 33-11. In the frist semi-final, BBMB defeated SJVNL 27-12 while SJVNL beat Power Grid by 39-15. Mr UC Mishra, Director (Personnel) Power Grid, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes. Kabaddi tourney
Sohana, September 24 In the of 47 kg category Kurali team beat the Kumbh team while Kalas Kalan team beat Kakrala Bhai team in the under-52 kg category. The girls kabaddi match, the major attraction of the tournament, was won by Sohana A team. While the local girls team beat the Mohali team. The three-day event is being organised in the memory of Late Baba Hanuman Singh by Baidwan Sports Club, Sohana. |
Hunt for fastest bowler begins
Chandigarh, September 24 Every participant was allowed to bowl three times and the speed was measured with speed guns. The fastest bowlers will participate in the finals for the Chandigarh round on September 25. The finalists will bowl four balls each and the bowler with the fastest speed over the two days will be declared the winner. The winner will receive Rs 10,000 and a chance to participate in the semifinals in Mumbai while the runner-up will receive a cheque for Rs 2,000. |
KV national sports meet from Oct 3
Chandigarh, September 24 Teams from across India will be participating in track and field events. The meet will be organised for both boys and girls under-14, under-16, and under-19 age groups. About 800 students are expected to take part. Mrs Rama Sharma, Principal, and the staff are making elaborate arrangements for the board and lodging of the participant. |

Springfield to host volleyball tourney
Ambala, September 24 School principal Dr T.C. Williams said the competition would be held from September 28 to October 2. Mr D.R. Yadav, Regional Director, CBSE, will be the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Dr Williams said that about 40 schools were expected to participate in the competitions. He added that all the CBSE affiliated schools of Ambala region had been invited for the competition and that four volleyball courts would be used during the tournament. |
NAC for Nayagaon soon, says MLA
Chandigarh, September 24 He said that the government was examining the forest Act and required necessary action would be taken and the NAC would be declared very soon so that the area could be developed in a planned way in which sewerage, water supply, streets, streetlights, parks and other basic amenities would be provided. He added that the government would shortly publish the required 21-day notice to invite objections from the public regarding the NAC in the Nayagaon area. After examining these, the government would take necessary steps. |
