BCM school students excel in basketball

Ludhiana, September 17
Students of BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh road branch, gave fine performance and were selected to represent Ludhiana in the state-level tournament slated to be held at different venues towards the end of this month.

In the U-19 years category, the players of this school secured first position in the zonal and district-level basketball tournaments. Harvneet Singh, Aseem Hans, Gagandeep, Arjun, Sarabjot, Pavneet, Depaali and Ranbir gave stunning performance and were picked up for the state championship. Similarly, in the U-17 years boys’ section, Indeerjit, Satnam, Saurabh and Pratush brought laurels to their school by securing berth in the team for the state meet.

In the U-14 years (girls), BCM school judokas Smriti, Ankita and Parul won gold medals in the zonal-level inter-school tournament while in the U-17 years, Mandeep earned place in the Ludhiana team for the Punjab judo championship.

Johar opens new block in Nishkam Vidya Mandir

Ludhiana, September 17
Education Minister Harnam Dass Johar exhorted voluntary organisations to provide quality education among children of the downtrodden as it was not possible for the government alone to cover all the colonies of the weaker sections.

He was addressing a function after inaugurating new block of building in Nishkam Vidya Mandir, being run by the Nishkam Seva Ashram, an NGO, in Ambedkar Nagar, Dugri road, here today.

He disclosed that with a view to enhancing the standard of education in Punjab, 35,000 vacant posts of teacher in the schools were being filled, as the state government had lifted the ban on the recruitment.

He said during the last year, additional classrooms had been provided in all primary schools as per the requirement and toilets had also been constructed for the students. For this purpose funds amounting to Rs 6 crore had been spent in Ludhiana district alone. Mr Johar announced a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the building of the school.

Later, Mr Johar laid the foundation stone for the laying of premix on 17 streets in Jawahar Nagar Camp at a cost of Rs 26 lakh and announced that in his constituency all remaining roads would be repaired shortly. Mr Raj Kumar Mehra was also present on this occasion.

Swimming championship begins today

Ludhiana, September 17
The Ludhiana District Swimming Association will organise the 36th Punjab State Swimming and Water Polo Championship for men and women here from September 18 to 20, according to Dr R S Parmar, President, Punjab Swimming Association (PSA). The championship will be held in all national events at the Municipal Corporation pool, Rakh Bagh.

Performance during this three-day championship will be taken into consideration while finalising the Punjab senior swimming and water polo teams for the 59th National Aquatic Championship to be held from October 4 to 9 at Trichur, Kerala, according to PSA general secretary, Balraj Sharma.

Ludhiana shuttlers for Punjab meet

The following players have been selected to represent Ludhiana in the Punjab Senior Badminton Championship to be held from September 22 to 25 at Ropar, according to Mr R. S. Behal, honorary secretary, Ludhiana District Badminton Association.

Men’s singles-Gurmukch Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Ashutosh Prabhakar and Jaswinder Singh; men’s doubles-Gurmukh Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Opinder Pal, Vineet Galhotra and Ravinder Verma; inter-district team-Gurmukh Singh, Lakhwinder Singh, Gurbaksh Singh, Raj Kumar, Vaneet Galhotra and Ravinder Verma.
