Free eye check-up camp today

Chandigarh, August 14
As part of the Independence Day celebrations, the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front (AIATF) will organise a free eye check-up camp at Mullanpur Garibdas village, near here, tomorrow.

A team of doctors from the Ophthalmology Department of the PGI will attend to the patients from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lala Gainda Mal Di Haveli near the bus stand, according to a press note issued here today.

The camp will be inaugurated by Wg Cdr Ashwani Kumar, Commanding Officer of the Air Force Station at Mullanpur. Mr Rajesh Sharma, president of the Chandigarh unit of the front, will preside over the function.

Meanwhile, the local unit of the Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) has greeted the residents on the occasion of the 59th Independence Day.

In a press note issued here, the NCP president, Mr Gurbachan Singh, urged the citizens to take a pledge for safeguarding the unity and integrity of the country.

Talk on AIDS awareness

An informative talk on ‘AIDS - awareness, causes and control’ was delivered by Dr S.K. Arora, Associate Professor, Department of Immunopathology, PGI, on the third day of the Orientation programme being held at the Government College of Education, Sector 20, today.

Dr Arora said, “There are nearly 45 million people who are HIV/AIDS infected in the developing countries and India’s 10 per cent population, which is nearly five million, is infected with the disease.

HIV-I-C is the virus which is spreading very fast in India”

He urged the teachers to join hands for the prevention of the deadly disease. He lamented that there was a need to change the hypocritical attitude of people towards this disease.

Badminton title for Piyush

Piyush Aggrawal beat Saurav Kapur in the finals of the men’s singles during the District Badminton Championship held at the Badminton Hall, Tau Devi Lal Complex, Sector 3 here today.

Piyush did not have a good start and lost the first game 9-15, but managed to pocket the second and third game, giving a tough fight to his opponent, Saurav, scoring 15-9, 15-5, respectively. Pallavi thrashed Jyoti Rawat in a straight set game 11-3, 11-2 in the under-16 singles girls category.

In mixed doubles, Kannu and Ravi beat Gauri and Parteek in a one-sided affair. The score was 15-8, 15-12.

Other results:

Under-10 Girls: Gayatri beat Ojaswani 11-5, 11-8.

Under-13 Boys: Akshit beat Deepak 15-8, 15-9.

Under-13 Girls: Muskan beat Daksha 11-4, 11-2.

Under-16 Boys singles: Ravi beat Prerak 15-2, 15-17, 15-9.

Under-16 Boys doubles: Prateek and Puneet beat Akshit and Gaurav 15-7, 15-11.

Men’s doubles: Saurav Kapoor and Manish beat Gaurav and Jatinder 15-5, 14-17,
5-12.

Women’s singles: Kannu beat Pallavi 11-0, 11-2.

Pooja, Indika Judo champs

Pooja and Indika bagged a gold medal each in the girls under-14 (below 35 kg) and under-12 years (25 kg) section, respectively, in the Chandigarh Sub-Junior State Judo Championships held at the Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

Other gold medal winners in the under 12 category are: Seema below 30 kg, Surbhi above 40 kg and Babita below 40 kg. In under-12 boys category the gold medalists are Pankaj below 25 kg, Dharminder below 30 kg, Ishwinder below 35 kg, Jaswinder below 40 kg and Parshu Ram above 40 kg.

In girls under-14, the gold medal winners are Indika-below 35 kg, Nivedita below 40 kg, Rekha-below 45 kg, Amandeep-below 50 kg and Nisha above 50 kg.

In boys below 14 the medalists are Chandan below 35 kg, Gagandeep below 40 kg, Anurag below 45 kg, Mandeep Singh below 50 kg and Jasbir above 50 kg.

Huge win for MCM Cricket Academy

A fine knock of 85 enabled MCM Cricket Academy-36 to beat Himachal Cricket Club by 100 runs in a league match of Lukesh Memorial (under-10) Cricket tournament held at Stepping Stones School, Sector 37, here today.

Brief scores: MCM Academy: 167 for 1 in 20 overs Karan Khosla 85 n.o., Harshdeep 17 n.o.); Himachal Cricket Club 67 all out.

Earlier, Saupin’s School, Sector 32, defeated Cricket Academy-37 by a margin of 14 runs.

Brief scores: Saupin’s School-32: 142 for 6 in 20 overs. (Manjot 18, Daksh Aggarwal 12, Rohan 34, Kartik 12, Gurkaran 21, Arnav 2 for 14, Arjit 2 for 14, Tushar 1 for 10); Cricket Academy: 128 for 5 overs, (Amber 45 n.o., Sayyam 25, Simardeep 3 for 19, Kartik 1 for 15).

In another match of the day, St John’s Cricket Academy defeated St. Soldier’s Cricket Academy, Panchkula, by 31 runs.

Dev, Nadia win titles

Dev Saini and Nadia Saini won the Boys’ and Girls’ Single title, respectively, in the Prof R.S. Mehta Memorial Table Tennis Tournament at TT Hall Sector 23, here today.

Dev Saini of DAV Public School beat teammate Rajan Mahedra 11-7, 11-7, 11-8, 11-7, while Meghna of Sacred Heart-26 made Nadia Saini of National Public School sweat, before losing to her in a long nail-biting match by 7-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-5, 11-7.

Meghna started well in the match after winning the first game at 11-7. At one stage Nadia was trailing by 2-3. But after that, Nadia put up a good display of the game and won the next sets and the title.

Dev Saini captured the second title of the tournament. He has already won the sub-junior boys’ singles title after beating Sumit Chaudhary of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School.

Selection trials

The Panchkula District Taekwondo Association will hold selection trials on August 16 at 6 pm at Blue Bird High School, Sector 16, to select the Panchkula team for the 17th Haryana State Senior Taekwondo championships to be held in Ambala from August 19 to 21.

Ball badminton meet

St Joseph’s Coaching Centre 44 (boys) and IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21 (Team A Girls), bagged the title in the IX Chandigarh Junior State Ball Badminton Championship for Smt. Santosh Rani Trophy played at IS DSSS School, Sector 21, here today.
