Panjab University results

Chandigarh, August 4
Panjab University (PU), today, declared the results of BA II (General) for additional, improvement cases, MA I (Dance), MA II (Philosophy), B.Ed I (correspondence courses) examinations held in April, 2005.

The result gazettes will be available at the New Enquiry of the university tomorrow at 4.00 pm onwards for personal inquiry and also on all working days afterwards. The results can also be accessed on the university website: www.puchd.ac.in except M.A. Part-I (Dance).

No result inquiry will be entertained on the telephone, according to Controller of Examinations, P.U.

EXTENDED: Panjab University Vice-Chancellor, K.N. Pathak, on Thursday extended the term of three deans of various departments. The Dean Student Welfare, Prof Nirmal Singh, the Dean Foreign Student, Prof S.K. Sharma, and Prof M.L. Sharma, Dean Alumni Relations, have been given extension for another term. Their term was slated to expire this month.

VACANCIES: Seats are lying vacant for one year post-M.Sc. course in accelerator physics in the Department of Physics, PU. Those interested may apply for admission latest by August 16 on the prescribed form available with the Panjab University SBI counter. The applicant should be MSc. in physics/applied physics from Panjab University or an equivalent examination from other recognised universities. The students should appear for interview on August 23 at 10.00 a.m. in the Department of Physics, PU.

ORIENTATION COURSE: The University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, an organised “orientation week” for the students of first year of BA LL.B. (Hons.), five-years integrated course, from August 1 to 4. It was organised in the Golden Jubilee Conference Hall. The lectures were specially arranged and eminent professors were invited.

Prof P.S. Jaswal spoke on ‘career in law’. He mentioned different options available to the law students once they passed out from the university. Prof R.K. Kohli, spoke on environment and sensitised the audience on “how to save self from self-infected pollution”.

Prof B.S. Brar delivered a lecture on the relevance of political science for the study of law. Ms Navjeet Brar, Assistant Dean of Library Sciences from the California Polytechnic University, also interacted with the students on the concluding day.

She talked on how to use the library resources, including access to e-library. The faculty of University Institute of Legal Studies also gave special lectures to familiarise the students with the BA LLB (Hons.), course, and these were based on law and social sciences.

In post-lunch sessions, talent hunt and a university trip was arranged for the students. The programme concluded with a quiz based on the lectures delivered during the orientation week. The objective of the orientation week was to acclimatise the students with academic and administrative environment of the University Institute of Legal Studies.

The students posed penetrating questions to the guest speakers and were highly appreciated by them, said Prof G.S. Grewal, Director, University Institute of Legal Studies.

Stephenians have grand plans to mark 125 years

The alumni association of St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, will celebrate the 125th year of its foundation this year in a big way and among major events planned, sports is high on the agenda.

Confirming this, Mr Arvind Malhotra, coordinator, coordination committee, jubilee year celebrations, St Stephen’s College Alumni Association, said they had planned to hold sports events from October 8 to 15.

He said the first function was held earlier in April this year to commemorate the first building of the college at Chandni Chowk. The function proved to be a grand success with Stephanian luminaries gracing the occasion.

Mr Malhotra said the college was founded by the Christian Mission from Westcott House, Cambridge, with Rev. Samuel Scott Allnutt as its founder Principal. It was first affiliated to Calcutta University, later to Panjab University and finally with the establishment of Delhi University in 1922, it became one of its three original constituent colleges.

He said the convener of the sports co-ordination committee of the jubilee year celebrations was Raja Randhir Singh, an alumni of the 1960s and six times Olympian in shooting, and the only International Olympic Committee member from India. The committee was headed by the Principal, Dr Anil Wilson, who is eleventh Principal of the college.

Mr Malhotra said the celebrations would begin on October 8 in the college with basketball, squash racquet, followed by felicitation of sportspersons. The next day, it would be tennis at the DLTA. On October 11, rifle shooting at the Tuglakhabad Range, cricket on October 13 at the Ferozeshah Kotla Ground and on October 14, golf at the Delhi Golf Club and finally mass run from Dhyan Chand National Stadium to Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 15.

Meanwhile, Mr Vijai Vardhan, a Stephenian and now secretary to the Haryana Governor said the Chandigarh Chapter also planned to have a big event to celebrate the occasion. He said in December every year, they held a get-together of Stephenians from Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

Mr Vardhan said he would hold discussions with Mr Parag Jain, IG, Punjab Police, who is also a Stephenian, regarding the celebrations. He said the Adviser to the Chandigarh Administration, Mr Lalit Sharma, Mr N.S. Kang, Secretary to the Punjab Governor, and Mr Anil Razdan and Amit Jha, IAS officers, were also Stephenians.

Demands accepted, says PUSU

The demands of students taken up by the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) were accepted by the Panjab University authorities here today, a press note issued by PUSU said. They sat in dharna in front of the Dean Students Welfare (DSW) office yesterday.

The main demands accepted by the authorities included withdrawal of hike in price of eatables, use of recommended and prescribed food items and products in hostels’ messes and canteens, maintenance of hygiene in messes and canteens, regular checks of hostels’ messes, provision of potable water facility among others.

“We welcome the decision taken by the PU authorities by quickly resolving the matter. We appreciate the concern shown by the authorities regarding the problems of students.” Amandeep Singh, President, PUSU, said.

“PUSU will always take up the issues relating to the student community and we will always stand by the students when they face any problem,” Simerpreet Singh Sidhu, press secretary, PUSU, said.

Announced: Ravinder Singh Sheokand has been chosen president and Satyender Singh Dhull secretary of the Haryana Students association. Their names were announced at a press conference held on the campus, on Thursday.

Dal Makhani for Israeli kids

Israeli schoolchildren who were in the city today have certainly learnt a lot about Punjabi food as they could identify dal makhani, raita, shahi paneer and roti at a luncheon arranged specially for them in a city home.

The reason for this familiarity with the Punjabi cuisine is that they have been staying for the past four days at Sri Dashmesh Academy, Anandpur Sahib. They are here to give a two-week emergency and first-aid training to the students the academy. These teenagers are routine paramedical volunteers and are here to share skills with Indian counterparts. The programme is being organised by the Embassy of Israel in collaboration with the India Trust, an educational NGO called Ritinjali and the Dashmesh Academy.

Their host for the day was founder of the Chandigarh Film Society, Tapesh Sharma. After a hearty Punjabi meal, the guests went shopping in Sector 17 and rounded it off with a visit to the Rock Garden.

When asked how it felt to be with Indian children, Bar Shalom, an Israeli student, said: “It is really very nice because the students here are so warm, kind and modest.” Navneet Kaur, a student of the Dashmesh Academy, said: “It is really nice having students from Israel in our school. We are learning a lot from them.”

Plantation drive by Gurukul kids

Students of The Gurukul held a tree plantation drive and also staged a street play on the importance of environmental conservation.

The drive was organised in association with HUDA at a park near the school in Sector 20. Mrs Neelam P. Kasni, Administrator, HUDA, was the chief guest and Mr Jogi Ram, Superintending Engineer, Horticulture Department, HUDA was the Guest of Honour.

The short programme included a speech on the ‘Importance of growing trees’ and a beautifully put up ‘Nukkad Natak,’ inspiring the common man to stop indiscriminate cutting of trees and to plant more trees.

Towards the end of the play, the students requested the chief guest and the guest of honour to plant the first saplings. The students also took out a rally in Sector 20, carrying banners and placards highlighting the importance of growing trees.

Merit certificates awarded

The Central Board of Secondary Education has awarded merit certificates to eight students of Hansraj Public School. These students- Yukti Sharma, Bhavika Singla, Prerna Dharni, Anita Singla, Pariansh Mittal, Pavanshu Aggarwal, Sakshi Dhingra and Pratibha Moudgil — have been awarded these certificates for being in the top 0. 1 per cent successful candidates in the Class X and XII examinations conducted by the CBSE in March, 2005. — TNS

PEC session starts

Classes formally began for the new session at Punjab engineering College here today. Students returned to the campus, chatted with friends, noted their time-table and got on with their studies.

While a rigorous six-day orientation programme organised for freshers preceded the start of the session in an attempt to acquaint them with teachers, the campus and study schedules, old students returned to their classes only today.

SI Sunita Bakshi gets bail

The District and Sessions Judge, Mr M.M.S. Bedi, today granted bail to Sub- Inspector Sunita Bakshi.

Sunita, accused of demanding Rs 2,000 from Sonu through Constable Husan Lal at the Mani Majra police station on May 12, had recently surrendered in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), Ms Neerja Kulwant Kalson.

It may be recalled that on May 12, Husan Lal was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,000 from one Sonu. The money was allegedly taken to help him in a matrimonial dispute.

During interrogation, Husan Lal alleged he had taken money on behalf of Sunita though there was no direct evidence of the police official taking or demanding money.

Two-day SPICMACAY convention from tomorrow

SPICMACAY’s annual ritual is round the corner. Hundreds of movement’s volunteers from all over the North will gather at Panjab University to lend shape to the forthcoming programmes for two days (August 6 and 7). SPICMACAY’s north zone convention will remain the mega event at Panjab University’s Golden Jubilee Guest House. The highlight of the event will be classical recitals by Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma and Mukul Shivputra, Kumar Gandharva’s son. The convention will start at 9 am on August 6.

To orient youngsters into the movement that resolves to keep the fire of tradition burning will be founder Dr Kiran Seth himself. He will hold sessions at various city colleges and will welcome new volunteers into his fold. Dr Shakuntala Lavasa, convenor, SPICMACAY (north zone), said the convention would wrap up with a classical recital by maestro Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma. “We invite all youngsters of the city to join us for the recital at the PGI auditorium latest by 6. 30 pm on August 6,” she said.

The convention is being held to provide a platform to volunteers to meet each other to exchange ideas and plan future activities, besides sitting in classical concerts and sharing priceless melodies. Said Dr Lavasa, “While national conventions are held once in a year, zone conventions are held twice every year and are hosted by educational institutes of repute. This year’s national convention concluded at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education and the north zone convention is being hosted at Panjab University.

Students and teacher volunteers and other coordinator volunteers from all over the north - Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttranchal and Delhi — will be coming to Panjab University to attend the convention, which will be inaugurated by Dr K.N. Pathak, PU Vice-Chancellor.

Heads of colleges and other institutes have also been invited to attend the convention, along with students. The event will feature conceptual sessions, discussions on organisational aspects and allotment of future year-long activities to SPICMACAY chapters.

The grand finale will be the recital by Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma, accompanied by Ustad Akram Khan on tabla. Mukul Shiv Putra’s vocal recital is also part of the programme, for which Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has consented to be the chief guest.

The second day of the convention will feature yoga classes and lectures with visuals by eminent speakers. Topics would include “aesthetics and music of mountains” and “costume designing for films and theatre”.
