International shooter pins hopes on youngsters
Chandigarh, August 1 She said in 1999, she won medals in the 10-metre event of National Shooting Championship in both junior and senior women section. It was great morale booster for her. Later, she won many more titles and participated in international competitions. Sabeeha said any promising shooter needed continuous inspiration so that he remained dedicated to the sport which required a great amount of hardwork. On the personal 10-metre ranges being constructed by certain shooters, she said many rifle shooters all over the country and globe had their own ranges at home since it required very less space compared to 25-metre, and 50-metre events. Normally one could set up a personal shooting range at a cost of around Rs 1 lakh, depending on the make of pulley, electronic or manual, and other paraphernalia. She said a shooter could start at the age of 12 or above since the game demanded more of patience and mental concentration. However, any budding shooter could always start hitting targets with normal rifle before the age of 12. There were many good brands of quality rifles from Germany and other European countries, though a bit costly. The National Rifle Association of India also helped a shooter to import such rifles on subsidised rates, said Sabeeha. She was of the view that any 10-metre range had to be indoor and also, if possible, air-conditioned, as in this region, the temperature was generally hot
and humid. Sabeeha said junior shooters of Punjab, like Harveen Sarao and Amanpreet Singh, had done exceptionally well in air pistol event. Coming International games including Commonwealth Games 2006 (Melbourne), Asian Games 2006 (Doha) and Beijing Olympics-2008 would certainly have Indian shooters winning medals not only in rifle event but also in air pistol and clay pigeon events. |
